ChaiLights Volume 16 Number 12—Kislev & Tevet— December 2014 December 2014 Worship Schedule December 5 & 6 Shabbat Vayishlach Friday: *Shabbat Family Service 7 pm Celebrating December birthdays and anniversaries Saturday: Shabbat Morning Service 10 am Rabbi's Message The festival of Hanukkah, as we observe it today, is a very different celebration than that which the Rabbis began to create centuries ago. On December 18, our last Thursday evening adult learning program of the semester, we will have the chance to trace that evolution and the historical and philosophical factors that helped to shape it. But, for now, let's take a moment to look at a snapshot of Hanukkah as it is celebrated today: December 12 & 13 Shabbat Vayeshev Friday: Jewish Book Month Shabbat Evening Service 8 pm Saturday: Shabbat Morning Service & Tot Shabbat 10 am Bar Mitzvah of Benjamin Kimchi December 19 & 20 Shabbat Miketz Friday: CHARLEY led Shabbat Evening Service 7 pm Saturday: Shabbat Morning Service 10 am December 26 & 27 Shabbat Vayigash Friday: Shabbat Evening Service 8 pm Saturday: Shabbat Morning Service 10 am *Babysitting is provided for our Shabbat Family Service beginning at 6:30 pm ChaiLights Ad Rates Business Card 1/4 Page 1/2 Page Full Page $35/mo $70/mo $130/mo $250/mo For most of us, our observance takes place at home. While the instruction might be to place our hanukkiyot (Hanukkah menorahs) in the window, most of us have one on a kitchen or dining room table, either instead of the window or in addition to it. All ages gather around the table – adults and children, parents and grandparents. For those fortunate enough to have family nearby, there might be multiple generations at once; or we might gather with a group of friends – a family not by birth, but by choice. But the important thing is that the candles become a focal point that draws us together. While the candles burn, we connect with each other and our tradition. We dance, we sing. We spin the dreidel and play. We eat – of course we eat! – latkes and sufganiyot and chocolate gelt. And we tell stories – the historical story of Hanukkah, the story of miracles, our own miraculous stories, the sweet (and funny and poignant) stories of Hanukkah celebrations past. We exchange gifts. Yes, we know this has the potential to overshadow other aspects of the holiday, but we also know it's a beautiful thing to say to someone: "You're important to me and I want to give you something I know you will enjoy as a way of expressing it." So we balance our gift-giving by remembering to say "I love you" or "I value you" in nonmaterial ways, and by giving time and gifts to individuals and organizations in need, as well. So what is the modern observance of Hanukkah? It's many things, of course, yet fundamentally it is the paradigm of family education. While "the candles are burning low," families connect with one another and their Judaism. We perform rituals; we share stories; we draw out values. We recount the Hanukkah narrative that lives in our historical memory, and recall and create our own memories that will be shared for years to come. And – very important – we have fun! As our congregation is a family of families, this is the model we strive to emulate, as well. For those who are a part of our Religious School, we hope your entire family will join us on Sunday, December 14, for a morning full of family programming. And, throughout the year, it is our goal to provide opportunities – both in the synagogue and at home – to help you grow your Jewish connections, individually and with each other. May this Hanukkah draw you close to all that matters most. Rosenberg December is Jewish Book Month and this is the perfect time to say Thank You, Todah Rabah, to a wonderful KKBE volunteer, Marlene Williamon. Because of Marlene’s hard work, we have a really remarkable library. I remember when the library was a small afterthought! So, I asked Marlene to tell us how this space was transformed into what we celebrate today. Here’s her story: “I was walking up the stairs into the old Temple office when Eve Berlinsky, President of KKBE at the time, caught up with me and asked if I would go into the Temple library and see if I could repair/organize the books. My answer to her was “gee, I didn’t know KKBE HAD a library!” I am not a certified librarian, but my love for reading prompted me to answer Eve’s suggestion. After finding and assessing the library, I determined that we had about 1,000 to 1,500 books on the shelves, and indeed, many of them did need repairing. It took about 6 months to repair many of the original books on the shelves. Today, I fix them before putting them on the shelves. When we moved to the present space in 2003, patrons were in the library almost daily--studying, reading, doing research, using the patron computer, and of course checking books in and out. Our library also loans out CD’s, DVD’s, videos and magazines and we now have a copier in the library for patron use. Our inventory totals 4000 books and other materials, and there’s room on the shelves for more, if you want to donate items. There is a separate children’s section, and on Sunday mornings when our Religious School is in session, the teachers bring their classes into the library for the children to borrow books. The Association of Jewish Libraries Weine Classification System is used in the KKBE library to catalog all the materials. This is an expansion of the Dewey Decimal system and quite easy to use. Currently, with e-books, the readership of our library is not used as it was in years past, but the KKBE library is still a fun place to be—especially on Sunday morning. Won’t you join us—any Sunday about 10am for board games, puzzles and conversation. If you would like to assist on Sundays, please call. Jewish Book Month is December and the oneg after Shabbat services on December 12th will be held in the library.” Thanks, Marlene, for your dedication! L’Shalom, We would be honored to have you celebrate with us as our son, Benjamin Meir Kimchi is called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah Saturday, December 13th at 10 am. Kiddush Luncheon to follow We could not be prouder of our son Ben, who is the most loving and witty older brother to Emma and Caroline. Ben is a talented cellist and avid tennis player who attends Charleston County School of the Arts. In his leisure, Ben simply enjoys spending time with his family, friends, and pups, Rosie and Rusty. Hebrew Bet’s roots Hebrew Aleph’s word December 2014 ChaiLights Kislev and Tevet 5775 Page 4 Executive Director’s Message Alex Grumbacher Over the course of this past year I have had the opportunity to get to know a particular member in a much different way. Every month, I drive Delphine Barnett to or from KKBE (Tamar usually does the other direction) so that she can help prepare the Chailights for mailing. I have come to cherish this “car” time. We talk about her childhood in Natchez, Mississippi, her life in rural Illinois where, her husband Harry, of blessed memory, was a family doctor (the way doctors used to be). When the conversation turns to politics, I change the subject. This past month, the day came for our trip downtown. I realized that I needed to attend an event at my daughter’s school the same morning. I know how important this time, helping with the Chailights is for my friend, so I decided to take her with me to the school event so that she didn’t miss going downtown. We attended my daughter’s Boosterthon and she loved it. She was surrounded by hundreds of children running for a good cause, reiterating the entire time that she hadn’t been around little kids for quite some time. She cheered for the students, talked with other parents and the organizers of the event. She loved it! Why am I writing about this? Companionship for our seniors is important. As relayed by Louis Valerio, a GlamourGals Executive Board Member, an organization where teens are inspired to provide ongoing companionship and makeovers to elderly women in senior care: I believe that through volunteerism and commitment to change, younger generations have the power to remind every senior citizen that they are appreciated. I have witnessed the excitement on a senior citizens' face when a young girl rushed to a woman she had developed a special bond with to get advice on a dress design for her upcoming prom. Regardless of age, people can connect because they share one commonality -- a longing for companionship. Yes, Delphine helps with the Chailights, but that is not the important part. We provide an opportunity for her to be around other people at a place she loves. We also have a program where we provide some companionship for this segment of our congregation through a service provided by Donna Spencer and a group of dedicated volunteers. Each Friday Donna visits local nursing homes for Shabbat services and Jewish holiday programs. We are able to do this through a generous grant from BJH Foundation for Senior Services. But, is this enough? We often get phone calls from our older congregants, those that were extremely active in the past that would like to come to services or events once in a while, but no longer have the means to do so. They want to be a part of our community. Please let me know if you would be interested in giving rides to these members or would like to get involved with Donna Spencer’s program. This is an easy way to brighten someone’s day. I look forward to hearing from you. L’Shalom, Alex Delphine at the Belle Hall Boosterthon. We are looking forward to the KKBE Shabbaton April 11, 2015 December 2014 ChaiLights Kislev and Tevet 5775 Page 5 Vice President of Administration Ben Glass Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards. – Soren Kierkegaard As I write this, I am looking forward to the installation of Rabbi Andrew Terkel, on Friday, October 21, 2014. On that evening, we can officially say we are a two rabbi congregation. But really, Rabbi Terkel and his wife, Hannah Rubin-Schlansky, are already a part of this community – hosting gatherings in their sukkah, sharing meals with congregants, and reaching out into the larger Charleston community. Not even four months in Charleston, and Hannah is already working with the development and governance group to gather, review and centralize all of our policies. As we grow in size, both in terms of members and clergy, it is important that we understand what and who brought us here, and equally important that we be willing to continue evolving. While we should not change for the sake of change, neither should we resist change for fear of the unknown. Many wonderful people have given their time, talents, and treasure over the last 266 years to bring us to where we are today. Just as surely, people we do not yet know will contribute much in the future to create a congregation we can only imagine. Change is hard. Change is scary. But without change, there is no progress. A year ago, none of us had heard of Andrew Terkel. Eighteen months ago, no one here knew who Alex Grumbacher was. Five short years ago, none of us knew a young, Midwestern rabbi with an affinity for the St. Louis Cardinals would be standing on our bimah weaving sermons filled with baseball, humor, and incredible insight. As I sit in the Board room during Trustee meetings, I see faces that were not here five years ago. But as we sit here today, looking back on those past five years, do we not understand how different we are today as a congregation than we were five short years ago? Certainly we must look backwards to understand the story of KKBE, and we must honor and treasure all those who have contributed to that story. But just as surely, we must also be willing to turn the other way and continue living that story into the future. So I wish a hearty welcome to Rabbi Terkel and to Hannah, and I look forward to welcoming the many unknown leaders and congregants of the future who will continue, with us, to live the story of KKBE. That having been said, by the time you read it, Thanksgiving will be over and Chanukah on the horizon, so I guess we will have to accept the fact that it is winter – even in Charleston. As you know, Sisterhood traditionally has two fundraisers a year, the Bazaar and our ongoing fundraiser – Chosen Treasures Gift Shop. While I sincerely hope that I’ll be reporting that this year’s Bazaar raised record amounts and hope you will think of Chosen Treasures for all your Chanukah needs, please know that this year we’re proud to be adding our wonderful new cookbook, “Historically Cooking” to our fundraising projects. Come in to the Gift Shop to take a look at it. It makes a wonderful Chanukah gift! We’re relying on your help to raise more money than ever so we can fulfill our mission of supporting our Temple. Sandra Bregman Waking glad to greet the day, While never worrying what to say; Brightly living with youth’s heart, Taking pleasure from the start; Of just the ordinary things to do, Like walking along enjoying the view, Of trees and lawns of gardens sweet, That loving hands had made so neat; And watching birds and butterflies, That punctuated the scenes before my eyes; Oh would that innocent exuberance yet return, That only happy youth can learn-I would again feel happy just to be, And find that unfettered soul that’s truly me.
