The clubhouse looked very festive with a new large Oktoberfest banner, blue and white streamers on the ceiling, beer hall seating with Oktoberfest patterned table covers and decorative Oktoberfest cutouts on all the walls and windows. Mary & Tim Cleaveland and Sheri & Jed Miller were the co-chairs for the third consecutive year. Many hands worked to create a delicious food selection. Once again 2 styles of brats were made fresh by Uli’s Famous Sausage, beer and root beer were provided by Big E Brewery, and the polka band was the Bonnie Birch Band. Ongoing Break-ins on 18700 block of Ridgefield Road Apart from garbage being dumped on driveway and the road frontage littered, property has now been broken into 3 times! The rear door was been kicked in (deadbolt ripped out of frame) with a second outside door again unlocked. More recently, the washing machine in the basement was stolen (water pipes cut through) along with some carpeting torn up. The owner’s manual was located and stolen as well. Obviously, removing an appliance as large as a washing machine is non-trivial and must have required more than one person, lifting equipment, and a truck to haul it away more than a casual burglary. INNNIS ARDEN UPCOMING ELECTIONS AND ANNUAL MEETING The next Annual Meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at 7:00 PM. We will also be electing two Directors to the Board. Each Director serves a three-year term and the current term of office for Directors Mike Jacobs and Bob Allen will expire in 2014. Additionally, the appointment of Kathi Peterson for Clubhouse chair will expire and the remaining 2 year term must be filled. Ratification of the election of the Activities Committee Chairperson to the Board for a one-year term will also take place. From the By-Laws, “Shareholders who wish to be candidates for Director positions and who wish to have their names appear on the official ballot shall notify the Secretary in writing not later than the stated Board of Directors meeting the month before the Annual Meeting. Additional nominations may be made from the floor at the Annual Meeting by a qualified shareholder. The nomination must be seconded and with the consent of the nominee. The additional nominees shall be presented with the slate at the Annual Meeting.” ( Note: The Board will meet on December 9, 2014, 7:00 PM. We have made an effort to deter the home invasions by boarding up doors and checking on the house at least every 2-3 days. Apparently, this time they muscled into the front door and broke in. We now have secured the front door. The police think it was kids, who possibly broke into a car in Woodway and somehow ended up at our vacant house. There were several items in the house from the car burglary. 2 (Continued from page 1) ed out the food line up. Desserts included German Chocolate cake, peach and plum kuchens, fresh fruit, and of course root beer floats! A record number of happy participants attended the festive occasion this year. Every event has at least one good story. Ours this year was that when the grill did not work Brian Branagan volunteered his gas grill, and wheeled it down the hill from his house to the clubhouse so those tasty brats could sizzle on a grill for our hungry group! Thank you Brian!!! Many volunteers participated in set up, food prep, event work, and tear down. Our wonderful volunteers included: Tom Compton, Randi Fattizzi, Deborah Howe and Neal Larsen, Jane & Tate Mason, Matt & Victoria Oclassen, Ed & Buny Renour, and Kelly & Maggie Tabor. Tom Compton cooked 6 pounds of bacon for the potato salad alone!! And thank you to all the late night attendees to helped with tear down. Rob Tripple, the Club's insurance broker, is having difficulty finding an insurer who will issue a policy for a reasonable premium due to the fact that the Club is a for- profit rather than non-profit corporation, which places the Club in a higher risk category. Mike has spoken to Peter Eglick concerning the idea of re-incorporating as a non-profit. Peter issued a memorandum on this subject about 10 years ago. SECRETARY, Sue Cox: Sue reminded everyone that the Annual Meeting and elections are not too far off in the future (January). Three Board member positions will be available (Jacobs, Allen and Peterson). The Board will be setting a date for a second site visit concerning the Town vs. Joseph/Njegovan covenant compliance petition as Dr. Joseph has indicated that additional pruning was accomplished recently. During one of our September events, someone pulled the toilet paper dispenser off the wall in one of the cubicles in the women’s restroom. A new dispenser was purchased and installed and the severely damaged wall repaired and re-painted. The annual maintenance of the clubhouse fire extinguishers was completed for the Club free of charge. The inspector was in the area inspecting the fire extinguishers at Harley O’Neil’s properties and because we had only a few, he visited the clubhouse during his lunchtime and did the inspections. Randi Fattizzi from the Activities Committee requested light bulb protectors be purchased and installed to cover unprotected light bulbs in the clubhouse storage areas. Protectors were purchased and installed. One of the functions of the clubhouse manager is to insure that sufficient cleaning and maintenance supplies are available for the clubhouse cleaners. This past month I purchased paper towels, garbage bags, hand towels, deodorizer and hand soap at Costco and Cash & Carry. This past March and April the entrance to the clubhouse was refurbished with new paint, flooring, seating, tables and artwork. The painting was also extended into the restrooms and kitchen. This past month the rest of the clubhouse was painted to match what was begun in the entrance. The painting was also extended into the hallway adjacent to the Seeking 2015 Innis Arden Event Chairpersons and Volunteers -- We are looking for people to chair and volunteer to help with the following 2015 events: the Men’s Night Out and the Salmon BBQ. Contact Brian Branagan if are interested in learning more about the opportunities to help put on these popular Innis Arden events. Summer Tennis Program -- Shelley Brodersen reported that attendance was up for the 2014 Summer Tennis Program. However, expenses were up as well. The committee is looking for someone to manage the 2015 Tennis Program. Contact Shelley Brodersen if you would like more information. November Activities Meeting -- The next meeting will be at Randi Fattizzi’s home on Monday, November 3rd at 7pm. NATURAL RESERVES, Rick Leary: Plant Survival Study -- We initiated a study to compare survivability of trees grown in 1-gallon pots with 6 feet nursery grown trees that have been dug up and prepared with a burlapped root ball. This study was initiated last spring with the intent of planting all trees in areas of our natural reserves where watering is not practical. To give the trees a reasonable chance of survival, all trees were planted within stream buffers or near seeps that are common in Running Water (RW) and Blue Heron (BH) Reserves. 5 (Continued on page 6) (Continued from page 5) Twenty (20) Excelsa Cedars that were at least 6 feet tall were all planted within 10 feet of the streams in RW and BH. The trees in 1-gallon pots included 25 Shore Pine, 25 Vine Maple, and 45 Hydrophilic trees including Pacific Willow, Western Hawthorne, Pacific Crabapple, Cascara, and Choke Cherry. Five (5) Quaking Aspen were included to round out the group. All planting was done in late April through May. No watering was done except what was naturally available. Shore Pine had an 84% survival rate, Vine Maple had a 96 % survival rate, and the Hydrophilic had a 72% survival rate. The Shore Pines grew vigorously and appeared to be very healthy. The Hydrophilic tree survival would increase to 96% if we exclude 7 plants that were in the area where a large number of hazardous trees were recently removed. These plants couldn’t be found because of the large number of trunks and brush that has not yet been removed from the area. The Quaking Aspen had a 60% survival rate. The remaining 40% has some twig death but other parts of the tree seemed to be surviving. Only 45% of the Excelsa Cedar is still alive and healthy. Ten percent (10%) of the Excelsa Cedar have a significant amount of dead leaves; these trees may or may not survive through the winter. The remaining Excelsa Cedar are all dead. This clearly demonstrates that the survival rate of trees that are not watered during the dry summer months is much better with 1-gallon pots. This is probably due in part to 1-gallon pots having the entire root structure of the plant. In a separate study from 2011, we planted quite a few small bare root trees in Running Water Reserve; these trees are now 5 to 8 feet tall. Thus, using plants from 1 gallon pots should provide us with good survivability with substantial growth after 3 years. Storm Creek Stream Study -- The City of Shoreline Public Works Department wants to move ahead with monitoring Storm Creek just before the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railroad where extensive erosion has occurred in lower Eagle Reserve. This erosion monitoring plan would involve taking a formal baseline survey this October (prior to the start of wet weather) and returning on an annual basis and also possibly after major storms to gather additional monitoring data. A professional survey crew would conduct the initial baseline survey and annual updates in future years; City staff from the Public Works Department would likely perform some additional basic surveying after major events and at the end of the wet season. Natural Reserve Committee Planning Meeting -- The Natural Reserve Committee will meet from 7 to 8 pm at the Clubhouse on Tuesday, October 21. The committee will be deciding the priorities for restoration work in our reserves. It is an open meeting available to all Innis Arden residents. COUNCIL OF NEIGHBORHOODS, June Howard: The Council of Neighborhoods met Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at the Shoreline City Council Chambers. We had speakers on how to attract and retain volunteers in our neighborhoods. Our November meeting will be on the 2015 City Budget and the CIP budget. The CON has four opportunities for folks to be involved. We are forming a committee for Leadership/ Education Training and a second for Inclusion/ Diversity Issues. We also have a committee forming to show Meaningful Movies, which is a program to show documentaries regarding an area of social justice with an open discussion following. Our last committee being formed will join with the World Dance Program which Rosie O’Brian-Ochs now leads. We encourage Innis Arden residents to get involved by volunteering for one or more of these opportunities, thus getting acquainted with other folks in our city. A World Dance party is being held at Shoreline Community College on Friday, October 24. Come and join in a wonderful time. We also need a second delegate and a second alternate delegate from Innis Arden to the Council of Neighborhoods. If you would like to be part of this group, please let me know. My contact information is [email protected] or 206-542-8177. COMMUNITY COMMENTS: There was considerable discussion on what is taking place with the Point Wells development.
