THIS WEEK’S MEETING
Katherine Kenny and Eleanor Randrup, co-authors of Courageous Women of Maryland, visited with us today and told us
about four of the eighteen Maryland women profiled in their book. Kathy and Ellie met at Roland Park Country School
where their previously written biography, Juanita Jackson Mitchell: Freedom Fighter is part of the curriculum. Ellie was a
teacher and Kathy a librarian. Upon their retirement, they realized that there really were no good references on Maryland
women of note tailored to younger readers. They chose women "who were visionary and who made choices not typical of
their peers," states the introduction. All the women they wrote about "overcame insurmountable odds, considering the time
frame in which they lived." We heard about four of them today: Helen Brooke Taussig, a pediatric cardiologist, went deaf
but learned
the heartbeats of children with her hands. She is known for her innovative work on "blue baby"

syndrome and was able to become a doctor when Hopkins agreed to admit women to its School of Medicine. As a child, Alta
Schrock was very curious, and observed and recorded everything she could about the many plants and animals around her
mountain home. Her extensive knowledge of plants and animals won her a college scholarship, and her strong creative spirit
restored self-esteem and introduced a better way of life for many people in Western Maryland. Her most apparent
achievement was the founding of Penn Alps Crafts Shop and Spruce Forest Artisan Village, providing an outlet for local
artisans. Eugenie Clark, known as "the shark lady," is an ichthyologist noted for her research on poisonous fishes of the
tropical seas and on the behavior of sharks. She is the founding director of the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota. Former
Congresswoman Helen Delich Bentley was born in the small mining town of Ruth, NV and came to Baltimore to write for the
nd
Sunpapers. She served as Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission and represented MD’s 2 District in the US
Congress. Throughout her career, she has tirelessly promoted the advancement of America's maritime community,
America's industrial/manufacturing base, and the Port of Baltimore. Interesting talk! Thanks for coming, Kathy and Ellie!
