We are aiming this year for all young people in St Mungo’s Academy to be in full school uniform having sourced a supplier who has significantly reduced the cost of the blazer to ensure it is affordable for all. A reminder that the uniform is as follows: Black tailored trousers (For Boys & Girls) Black Skirt (obviously Girls only) White shirt School Tie Blazer School Uniform is not: Sweatshirts - of any description Hooded tops Black Jeans or leggings Elasticated short skirts I would ask for your support in ensuring that in keeping with many schools in the North/East, that young people wear full school uniform, supporting school policy with pride in being of our school community. The school uniform policy was part of a consultation undertaken through both Pupil Council and the Parent Council. Whilst I’m happy to inform you that the Pupil Council achieve and vibrant in the school, unfortunately the Parent Council urgently requires new members of the existing Parent Council, 5 members in total, 4 participants have young people in S5, whilst our chair person will be standing down as of next session since her son leaves school this session. The Parent Council is an excellent opportunity for Parents and Carers to have their say in the life and work of our school. A strong parental voice is important to inform the direction of the work of the school and to support school priorities. I would ask that you give some consideration to be coming involved and attending meetings to ensure parental concerns and opinions are expressed regarding any issue related to the future progress of St Mungo’s Academy. Finally, could I also ask you to complete an online survey which will also provide as with information as to your opinion on what we have achieved so far. The survey will take approximately15 minutes to complete and will able to inform our next steps. The link as follows: http://rigdemo.azurewebsites.net/Questionnaire/Respond/z9dta9xxx If any Parent/Carer has difficultly accessing the website or accessing a computer, please do not hesitate to contact the school and we will make necessary arrangements. Thank you for your continued support. A Milton Head Teacher ST MUNGO’S ACADEMY AT UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE BUSINESS SCHOOL Glasgow pupils invited to take steps towards a brighter future: Some of our young people got the chance to experience university life in April at an event organised by Strathclyde Business School. Marwa Abdelali, Asma Abdi Jiaer, Ilhan Farah and Sarah McLaughlin all attended a one-day event during the Easter break. The One Step Forward event, supported by professional services firm PwC, was organised by third year Business School students as part of their Management Development Programme. The week’s event targeted S4/5 pupils from Glasgow, North & South Lanarkshire, North & South Ayrshire, Inverclyde & West Dunbartonshire, who will soon be making tough decisions about their next steps after finishing school. The event aimed to open young people’s eyes to the diverse range of opportunities university can bring them through current students sharing their own insight and experiences. Pupils were given advice and information on the alternative routes they can take to being accepted to university, the different subjects they can choose, options for studying abroad, career progression and funding support. Throughout the day, attendees were also introduced to the social side of university, working together in groups with people they have never met before, just like they would in first year. Teams competed in a build-an-app challenge that encouraged pupils to think creatively to design and promote their own app. Two winning ideas emerged, including WorkUp which would help young people with their homework, by providing past papers, course notes and an ‘ask a teacher’ service. Fashion Alert also came out on top, which would prompt users to enter their style preferences and then find corresponding items on the high street. Pupils also took part in a real-life lecture, campus tour and heard from the event’s supporters PwC. Charles Bleakley, Glasgow Community Champion at PwC, said: “This event is all about highlighting the opportunities that university can bring to young people and it was fantastic to see so much enthusiasm from everyone who came along. As a firm, we are committed to helping create a sustainable future in our communities, preparing students for their lives after secondary education and helping them move towards a range of positive destinations from apprenticeships to study. From my discussions with the students throughout the day, it’s clear they really benefitted from this initiative, having the chance to learn and connect with people in a different way.”Marwa Adelali, a fifth year pupil from St Mungo’s Academy, said: “My favourite part of the day was creating our app, ‘Motivate Me’, and getting to listen to what other groups came up with as everyone had innovative ideas. Getting to see all the cool facilities at Strathclyde, like the sports centre, made me think this would be an interesting university to go to.” As you can see from these news articles, Marwa is famous!!! Support for Learning Department ASD Parent/Carer Support Forum What is Saint Mungo’s ASD Parent/Carer Support Forum? …………. It is exactly that, a forum for you. We aim to provide you with opportunities to meet where you, as parents or carers of young people on the autism spectrum who are part of our school community, can raise and have addressed, the issues that you feel are most important to you. As well as an informal opportunity to talk to each other and share each other’s experiences, we provide a platform for outside speakers to come and speak with and listen to you about the issues you have highlighted. Meetings take place in a relaxed setting during the school day in August, November, February and May. Our first meeting provides you with an overview of how we, as a school support young people on the autism spectrum, and we also at this point share information that has been built up through previous group meetings about supports available in particular in the local community, but also beyond. The focus for further meetings is then decided by you. Exact dates & times of meetings, once agreed, will be sent directly to you as well as being published in our newsletter and on our website. We very much hope that you will take part in these meetings & would welcome the chance to hear your views. Pupil Council Three of our S1 Pupil Council attended the Talk2Gather Conference at the City Chambers on Thursday 21st May. Many primary and secondary schools were present and their presentations included Sustainable Learning, Pupil Voice as well as Values and Ethos. This means that we will hold the UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child) at the heart of our school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos and hope to involve not just pupils and teachers but our entire school community in learning about the importance of upholding and respecting the rights of the child and embedding it into everything we do. There are many school’s across Glasgow who are working towards achieving the award of becoming an RRS school and some have listed a few of the many positive impacts they have experienced while working towards this including - improved self-esteem and well-being, improved relationships and behaviour (reductions in bullying and exclusions and improved attendance), improved engagement in learning, positive attitudes towards diversity in society, reduction of prejudice and an enhanced moral understanding and support for global justice in young people. This is something that will not happen overnight but instead will start tobecome rooted in our school culture over time and we hope that you will follow & support us and the rest of the school community with what should be an exciting and valuable endeavour. Hospitality Wider Achievement HI my girls on Monday have been great fun to work with; their attendance has been exemplary and they have all gained many skills and I'm sure could follow a recipe and produce a healthy meal on their own at home for their family.
