about). Howard Greenstein had his DD Homecoming on
Nov. 1st, and a good time was had by all. He is the main
man in our District and he belongs to us at 1770!!!
MESSAGE FROM OUR EXALTED RULER
By Art Johnson
I try to toot the horn for our Lodge but it’s the
Members that provide the best noise. Thank you to the
Ladies pushing for the Lounge Bathroom makeover. I
will list them and if I omit any of the people involved
forgive me and know I will enter your name in the next
newsletter, Mary Hall, Lori Rodriquez, Laurie Rogers,
Janelle Antoine, Gina Lambert, Sue Champagne and
Terye Sununu. Good work ladies.
It’s November 2014!! This
year is flying by. It seems that
the people we call Snow-Birds
are among us again and I want
each non-snowbird to point
out the changes that have been
made to our BPOE #1770
Lodge. From the small things
such as the door closers in the
men’s & Ladies Rooms; to the big changes that include
the back Patio and the new look of the Grill area as well
as the Ladies Room in the Lounge area. Your fellow
members have put a great amount of work to complete
these jobs. We are Delray Beach Elks Lodge #1770 and
the best in the District as far as I am concerned.
Pete Cattabrigga & Butch Aubrey, Rick Jankee
and his faithful companion Richard Barkalow, Jeff
Aubrey, Scott Elliott, Peter & Chris Morales, M-Rod,
Lanny Carter, Gary Lambert and Joe Altomare, have
been a mainstay in our survival as a Lodge this summer.
My part in all of this has been limited but I do
write a mean and cheerful ER note
Our past few months have seen the rise of the
Friday Night Trivia along with the Fish Fries and Pete C’s
Conch Fritters The PER Pasta Nights have been a good
thing on the first Thursday of the Month. We have to
schedule in some very important dates and entertainment.
BINGO on Wednesdays and Games of Chance on
Saturdays each week are a big draw and a great way to
meet new Members and have the funds to support our
charities and roof fund. The bingo cards sellers are the
best folks on earth and are there week after week to keep
the flow of these games of chance. Our Lodge has been
busy with Parties and Golf outings and we are grateful
for all the planning and hard work that has gone into
these endeavors. Rick Jankee hosted a Bears Football
Party on the 19th of Oct., and we have had the best Adult
Halloween Party on record (one that is worth talking
ELK OF THE MONTH
November and all eyes turn to the cool
and refreshing 60% humidity. We can enjoy the
outside patio and all of the new furniture for a
couple of reasons. I don’t have to name the man
with the vision but the person who is unsung and
a very hard worker is Richard Barkalow. Rick
Jankee is the task master and together they have
done an outstanding job on our outside patio.
Congrats to our Elks of the Month.

ELKETTE’S CORNER
By Ruth Lee, President
Past Presidents and
Past Exalted Ruler’s Recognition Dance
(Jackets requested)
Vice President Laurie Rodriguez and I attended the 51st
Florida Ladies of the Elks (FLOE) conference in Daytona on
September 18 through 21. We received a certificate for $1365
for our donation to the Children’s Therapy Service. I believe
we were the only lodge from the SSE district. New officers
for FLOE were sworn in. No by-law changes were voted
on. We attended the beautiful memorial service for deceased
Elkettes and names of three ladies from our lodge were
read. The names were Edna Berube, Janet Combs and Terry
Caparelli. We will always remember these ladies. We were
not the smallest group of ladies. Some lodges only had from 4
to 11 active members so we are doing well by having 32 paid
up members.
At our last meeting on 10-2-14 the Elkettes donated
$1000.00 for a track chair for our veterans.
Our long time Elkette Mary Lazar had a stroke in August
and was in Pinecrest nursing home. We hear from Martha
Webb that she has recovered and no longer at Pinecrest. The
Elkettes wish Mary a speedy recovery and hope to see Mary at
our next dinner dance.
Since I missed Riley Campbell’s birthday in the September
issue, happy belated birthday to Riley Campbell on
September 15th. Linda Butler’s birthday was 10/7. Hope
you are doing well Linda. Also Ellen Houck’s birthday was
on 10/20. Hope you had a happy Birthday Ellen. Thanks for
all your help with the cake sales.
We are planning our events for the upcoming season. The
first event is our Past Presidents Dance on November 22nd
with Mixed Company Band. We are recognizing our PERs
as well. I hope that our PERs will support us on this event.
Invitations will be sent out.
The Elkette Christmas Party is with Jeff Aubrey and we
are looking forward to a good time on Friday December 19th.
The Elkette Fashion Show is on Saturday January 17th
with Addictions as our coordinator. Thanks for your input on
selecting the Fashion Show coordinator.
The Valentines Dinner Dance is Saturday February 7th
withMixed Company Band. We were not able to get the
band on February 14 and voted to reschedule the dance to the
7th.
Elkettes are always open for new members. If you are a
man or woman, even an Elk, with an interest in having fun
and planning creative special events to raise funds to support
the Florida Elks Children’s Charities and our Lodge; you’re
welcomed to come and meet us at any monthly meeting. If
you are an Elk you can also be an Elkette. You no longer
have to be related to an Elk to become an Elkette. For
more information about Membership, call Laurie Rodriguez
Membership Chair. All Elkettes are encouraged to attend the
monthly meetings.

Elkette of the Month
Our Elkette of the month is Grace Angus. Grace
is one of the most generous ladies that I know.
Grace recently purchased clothing and bedding for
the Elks Youth Camp. At the FLOE conference
we were asked to donate clothing and bedding and
Grace outdid herself again. Grace is also chairing
the Valentine dance with Fran Campbell and we
appreciate their help and support. Grace is also
our chaplain. Thank you Grace for all that you
do. We appreciate your support.
If anyone is going to the Youth Camp please
contact Grace Angus or Ruth Lee so that these
articles can get to the Youth Camp

FREE BIRTHDAY DRINK!
Come to a Lodge meeting
in the month of your Birthday and
receive a FREE drink in the Lounge!
Another month gone and a lot of good
things to look forward to in the months to
come!! A very important event scheduled for
the First of November is the District Deputy
Visit. Our very own Howard Greenstein, who
is now an officer of the Grand Lodge, will
perform the annual visit. That’s where we
get to impress him with how well everything
is going here in Delray so I hope you joined
in the festivities. I also hope we get an A+
on our Report Card!! If not, all of us officers
have some serious “splainin’” to do.
We can also look forward to having all our
Snowbirds come home to roost. That means
we should have lots of activities going on
and have a full house for all of them. Come
by and say Hi! Try your luck at Bingo on
Wednesday or Saturday, test your skill at Trivia or come by for a feast at one of our delicious dinners. There will also be the Past Exalted Ruler and Past Elkette President’s Ball
in November. This is the first year we are
honoring both the Elk and Elkette past leaders
so join us for a festive evening of dining and
dancing to show your appreciation for all their
hard work. These jobs are strictly volunteer
so we certainly owe them our thanks.
Sadly, last month I had to purge a total of
36 members from our membership list due to
non-payment of dues. That dropped our total
membership to 502 which is less than last
year’s final number. The good news is that I
am expecting about 12 new initiates to come
in before you read this column so we should
be ahead of last year by 2. That means we
can hopefully look forward to growth over
the next five months and surpass last year’s
total by a sizeable number if you keep your
eyes open for new prospects. We would all
love to see Delray Beach produce the best
member increase in the District, maybe even
in the State. Oh, what the Hell, let’s go for the
biggest increase in the USA. Together we can
do it.
Fraternally,
Laura Schraeder, Secretary
