DIED. – From the Ceylon Gazette. – On the 14th May, 1820, died at the King's House, at
Columbo, in the 23d year of his age, Captain George Rivers Maltby, of his Majesty's 16th
regiment of foot, and eldest son of the Rev. Dr. Maltby, of Buckden, Huntingdonshire;
most sincerely regretted by the officers of his corps, and by all his acquaintances in the
colony. His death was occasioned by a fall from his horse, from which he received so
severe and injury, as precluded every hope of recovery; but by the efforts of medical skill
and the unceasing attention of his friends, his life was protracted for one week, during
which time he evinced that fortitude and resignation, which might be expected from the
amiable qualities of his mind. He was interred with military honours, and his remains
attended by the principal civil authorities of the island, and all the officers in the garrison..

THE REV J. F. BIGGE. It is with great regret that we announce the death of the Rev John
Frederic Bigge, vicar of Stamfordham, one of the best known and most highly respected
clergymen in the diocese of Northumberland. On Saturday, February 21st, Mr Bigge drove
into Newcastle from Stamfordham, being then apparently in the enjoyment of his usual
good health. When walking up Pilgrim Street, however, he was suddenly seized with
illness, and was carried into the shop of Mr Forbes, near the bottom of Northumberland
Street, and his friend, Dr Page, was immediately sent for. Dr Page, on finding that Mr
Bigge was suffering from paralysis, had him removed to his (Dr Page's) residence, 1,
Saville Place, where he received every attention. According to "Burke's Landed Gentry" the
Bigge family in this district is "stated to have descended from the ancient house, seated
for many generations at Hawkhurst, Kent, and Redgewell. Essex." William Bigge of
Newcastle, in 1666 married Isabella, daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Dent, and one of
his daughters married Edward Collingwood of Byker and Dissington; and his grandson.
William Bigge of Benton, married in 1736, Mary, daughter and sole heiress of Charles
Clarke of Ovingham, and the connection of the family still continues. Charles William Bigge
of Linden (grandson of Wm. Bigge of Benton), who for some years was chairman of the
Quarter Sessions of Northumberland, married in 1802, Alicia, only daughter of Christopher
Wilkinson of Newcastle, of the family of Wilkinson of Thorpe, in the county of York; and
the gentleman whose death we now record, was their fifth son. John Frederic Bigge was
born at Linden on July 12, 1814, and in 1843 married Caroline Mary, only daughter of Mr
Nathaniel Ellison, Commissioner of Bankruptcy in Newcastle, and leaves nine surviving
children, five sons and four daughters. One of the sons, Arthur John, is a captain in the
Royal Artillery, and served in the Zulu War in 1879, and was present in the engagement at
Kambala, and on his return home was appointed Equerry-in-waiting to the Queen. The
deceased gentleman completed his education at university College, Durham, where in
1840 he took the degree of B.A., and in 1843 that of M.A. He was in 1840 ordained a
deacon and priest by the Bishop of Durham, and was appointed to the curacy of
Edlingham. The vicarage of Ovingham, which is in the gift of the Bigge family, became
vacant in 1841, and the Rev J. F. Bigge was presented to the living, which he held until
1847 when he was appointed Vicar of Stamfordham and this living he held up to the time
of his death During an active life as a clergyman of the Church of England, extending over
a period of nearly half a century, Mr Bigge earned for himself the respect and esteem of all
with whom he came in contact; and it may truly be said that his parishioners at
Stamfordham entertained for him a much warmer feeling than esteem. The high
estimation in which he was held by the clergymen in Northumberland was shown by his
being repeatedly elected, since 1872, one of the Proctors in Convocation for the
Archdeaconry of Northumberland. Living in the country, Mr Bigge bad abundant
opportunity of cultivating his taste for natural history, and was a contributor to the
transactions, of the Tyneside Naturalists' Field Club, of which he was a member. The living
of Stamfordham is of the annual value of £774, and is in the gift of the Lord Chancellor.

was approved.
