Cosmetology
The Cosmetology program prepares students with the necessary 1,500 hours of theoretical and
clinical studies as required for the Maryland State Board Examination in Cosmetology.
Additional learning experiences include salon management, computer imaging consultations, as
well as theatrical make-up and hair styling. Students in the program provide various
Cosmetology services to the Carver Center Theatre Company, BCPS TV, non-profit
organizations, teachers, staff, parents and interested stakeholders.
BCPS Magnet Transportation: George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology
(Central Area) Transportation is provided at community pick-up points for students from all
areas of Baltimore County Public Schools.

Auditions by appointment
Individual assessment appointments must be scheduled no later than 11/23/16. Schedule your
appointment online at https://bcpsonlineapplication.com/apply or call the Magnet Office at 443-8094127 (NOT BOTH).
Unforeseen Illness or Emergency: Parent(s) must inform the school immediately if the applicant cannot
attend or complete the scheduled assessment due to an unforeseen illness or emergency. Please be aware that
assessments will not be rescheduled without documentation verifying the illness or emergency.
Inclement Weather Date: Saturday, January 21, 2017, at the previously scheduled appointment time
Inclement Weather: In the event that school activities are cancelled due to inclement weather, magnet
assessments will be postponed. Postponed assessments will occur on the designated inclement weather date.
All emergency closing and cancellation information will be posted on the BCPS automated information line,
410-887-5555. Closings and cancellation announcements will also be made through local media.

Cosmetology
Prior to the Audition
Demonstration of Interest
This must be completed prior to coming to the audition.
Cosmetology Audition:
Practicum:
Applicant’s performance will be evaluated in 5 areas: manual dexterity, ability to follow
directions, organizational skills, accuracy of work, and ability to maintain a clean work
space.
Applicants may want to practice the following skills before attending the audition:
A. Roller placement - full base
B. Roller placement - securing several rollers to the base with clips.
C. Properly holding the comb and using it as a tool.
D. Parting hair achieving a straight part in uniform sections.
E. Recognizing the top, crown, nape, neck, hairline and sides of the head.
Math : A practice math test provided.
The math assessment will evaluate skills in solving word problems, calculating fractions
and percents, and using basic math operations that arise in a cosmetology salon.
Calculators may be used for the math portion of the test. A calculator will be provided.
Interview Preparation: Applicants should be prepared to answer questions regarding their
interest in cosmetology, discuss their organizational skills, and describe how they would manage
conflict with a classmate or client.
Suggested Attire : Overall neat and clean appearance and professional attire (business casual)
is required for the interview. Business casual includes: dresses, skirts, blouses, sweaters, pants,
slacks, khakis, and closed toe shoes. No jeans, shorts, gym shoes, T-shirts, or athletic wear.
Heavy coats, jackets, hats, caps, scarves & outerwear must be removed during interview.

On the Day of the Audition
The audition takes approximately 2.5 hours.
Auditions by Appointment ONLY
It is the responsibility of the parent(s) to:
 ensure that the applicant attends the assessment on the scheduled date and time.
 contact the schools if scheduled magnet assessment appointments conflict.
Failure to attend an assessment WILL result in disqualification.
Registration Information
Individual assessment appointments must be scheduled no later than 11/23/16. Schedule your
appointment online at https://bcpsonlineapplication.com/apply or call the Magnet Office at 443-809-4127
(NOT BOTH).
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time. Students will register for the audition in the Dining
Hall. Students who are more than 10 minutes late may not be admitted into the audition. On average, the
entire audition takes approximately two hours. Due to personnel and time constraints, auditions may not
be rescheduled. Due to the high volume of applicants, there will be no seating available in the school for
parents/guardians. Parents are asked to drop off their students and return at the conclusion of the
assessment.

Assessment Description
On the day of the audition, students will participate in the following:
1. Cosmetology Practicum (50 points): Applicants will perform a State Cosmetology Board
application following a demonstration. Materials, tools, and instructions are provided.
Applicant’s performance will be evaluated in 5 areas.
a. Manual Dexterity (10 Points): Candidates are expected to be able to use basic tools of
cosmetology with comfort and accuracy.
b. Ability to Follow Directions (10 Points): Candidates are given directions in oral form and
shown a sample of what their project should look like upon completion.
c. Organizational Skills (10 Points): Applicants must demonstrate initiative in following
directions, their comfort and ability to function in a group setting, and their ability to
conduct themselves in a professional, mature manner.
d. Accuracy of Work (10 Points): Candidates are evaluated on their ability to complete the
project as directed.
e. Clean Up (10 Points): Applicants are evaluated on their attention to maintaining a clean
work space.
2. Interview (20 Points): Candidates are evaluated on their ability to respond to interview
questions in a polite manner, giving answers that are complete and well explained without
prompting from the interviewer. Questions are focused on the candidate’s interests in
cosmetology as a professional goal and on the candidate’s ability to work collaboratively with
others. Please research information to prepare to answer questions on cosmetology careers and
sources of information on cosmetology related topics and techniques.
3. Math (30 Points): Candidates will take a timed math assessment. The assessment will include
25 math questions. Calculators will be provided for the math portion of the test.
Documented testing accommodations, as appropriate to the assessment, will be provided.
