2010 World Championships comes to Colorado

2010 World Championships
comes to Colorado
Colorado Springs is hosting the 2010
World Synchronized Skating Championships.
This means that all the top teams in each country will be competing for the World title right in
our own back yard. The first ever synchronized
Worlds was held in 2000 at the University of
Minnesota in Minneapolis. Sweden 1 claimed
the title amongst twenty-one teams from seventeen different nations. USA 1, (Haydenettes)
placed fifth and USA 2 (Team Elan) finished
eighth.
Each year the top five nations at Worlds
qualify to send two teams to the next Worlds
Championships. The US has been able to send
two teams every year since 2000. Since the beginning, Sweden, Finland, and Canada have
dominated the podium in varying order. The
US has always been close, but didn’t medal until 2007 when the Miami University of Oxford,
OH won the Silver.
Since the beginning of the IJS system,
scores have gotten progressively higher.
Nexxice, of Canada won the 2009 World title

and now holds the record highest total score of
223.58 points.
Junior Worlds (a.k.a. World Challenge
Cup) is held every year just after US Nationals.
The top 2 Junior teams from each country get to
compete for the title. Team Braemar, from Minnesota, and Chicago Jazz were the two US competitors for 2009. The next Junior Worlds will
be March 12-14 in Göteborg, Sweden.
Alicia Carr was lucky to have competed
in two World Championships as a HaydenetteRouen, France in 2002, and Ottawa, Canada in
2003. We also hope to see our own Nellie
Schamaun as a Haydenette on Worlds ice in
2010 right here in Colorado. What an amazing
opportunity to see teams from all over the world!
Next year’s Worlds will be held April 1-2, 2011
in Helsinki, Finland. Road trip anyone?
Worlds Locations: Minnesota, USA Helsinki,
Finland Rouen, France Ottawa, Canada

Since Worlds is in the US this season, there will be people from all walks of
life coming to visit. After taking a poll, the following people were found to be
the best potential communicators for us! Alix speaks Spanish (lived in Spain
for two years) and has a master's degree in Russian. Rhonda speaks a little bit
of Russian and a little bit of Spanish. Sharon Funk is fluent in Spanish and has
traveled to Spanish speaking countries for work. Kristina Feste-Hanson speaks
French and a small amount of Norwegian. Julia Chu’s “good” languages are
English and Mandarin Chinese. She used to be fluent in German and spoke
enough Russian to get by in work situations along with Tourist French. Andi
and Cassy could get
around and order some
food with their French and
Leslie speaks a little Spanish. Meredith Chapin
speaks Spanish, in fact,
she is a Spanish teacher.
Julie Nyikos speaks Cantonese (one of 2 major
dialects of Chinese spoken
in Hong Kong and the
Guangdong province -- or
the very southern portions
of China , Mandarin being
the other one) along with a
little Spanish and Pig
Latin, and the language of

Team Spirit
Featuring Chereise Quintana
The Race: DS vs. Jaxon
July and August were very busy months for
the DS Coaches. With Head Coach, Alicia Carr,
due to have her son, Jaxon, August 17th, there was
a mad rush to get all DS teams choreographed and
started before her maternity leave. Luckily, Jaxon
waited until just days after the final choreography
weekend took place. Jaxon Jacob Carr
arrived at 4:24pm on August 12th. 8lbs,
9oz, 21 inches!
Cheriese (right) with teammates Riley (left) and Ande.
Chereise Quintana started skating when she
was ten. She just turned thirteen in June and is currently working on her pre-juvenile moves and freestyle. She is progressing fast in skating, which
may be partly due to her five years spent in gymnastics. She decided she wanted to try something
new by taking up skating and now she doesn’t
want to get off the ice! The 2009-2010 season will
be her second with the Denver Synchronicity Open
Juvenile team. Chereise is very proud to be a part
of Denver Synchronicity Teams. Her goals for
this season with the team are to improve her synchronized skating skills.
“I like skating as a team and my teammates
and the other Denver Synchro teams are very supportive” she stated.
Off the ice Chereise likes to draw, listen to,
hip hop and country music, and travel when she
can. Some of her favorites include the color pink,
fresh fruit, the Twilight books, and the shows Degrassi and Phineus. She has dreams of the Olympics and also considers becoming a doctor when
she gets older. She enjoys making her friends and
family laugh and smile. As an eighth-grader at
Dunstan Middle School, she has thought about attending Denver University so she wouldn’t have to
go far from home. Chereise also plays the cello
and has been part of the school orchestra for four
years now.
When asked who she admires she stated “ I
really look up to Alicia Carr. She's an amazing
skater and a really great coach.”
Caitlin BalchBurnett is coaching
