Congratulations to the Cross-Country team who competed in the annual Optimist CrossCountry Run on Monday, October 7. Despite the weather, Walter Zadow students competed
with determination and good sportsmanship and represented their school in a positive
manner.
Special recognition goes to Keaton McGrath who finished first in the boys grade 5/6
division, Lauren Hill who finished first in girls grade 7/8 division, Jordyn Gibeault who

Please remember that Walter Zadow is a scent free school.
Some students and staff have severe allergies to scented products.
Scented products contain chemicals which can cause serious
problems for many people, especially those with asthma,
allergies, or environmental illnesses. Please discuss this matter
with your child at home. Your attention to this matter is
appreciated.

Sweater Drive for Syrian Refugees.
Every Grade 1 student
received a copy of the
book “Boy Soup” by
Loris Lesynski. Thanks
TD Bank for donating
them to our students!
Thanks to all families who donated the
over 1,100 sweaters that were collected
before Oct. 25 here at Walter Zadow.
Congratulations to Liam Retty for
organizing the very successful sweater
drive. In partnering with Canadian
Lutheran World Relief and other
churches across Canada, sweaters were
collected to distribute to Syrian
refugees living in the Za’atari refugee
camp in Jordan, where they are bracing
for another cold, wet winter.
Thanks to the Canadian Red
Cross we have mittens available
on cold days for students to
borrow. These are available
because of the volunteer knitters
and those who
donate yarn to
the program.
If you or
someone you
know has
some odds
and ends of 3
or 4 ply yarn they would like to
donate, please call the branch at
613-735-1157. They are always
looking for knitters too!
Why we use Kelso’s Choices?
Kelso’s Choices is a Conflict Management Program for Children whose
philosophy is that each child is seen as smart enough and strong enough to
resolve conflict…that all children are capable of becoming peacemakers.
Goals of Kelso’s Choices
Empower children with the ability to determine their own behaviour and
become accountable for their own choices.
Reduce tattling through a proactive preventative approach that keeps
Pictured above is Liz Hildebrandt,
small problems from escalating and prevents negative attention seeking.
our School Support Counsellor,
with Kelso and Lily.
Consistent expectation that all students will use Kelso’s Choices.
Provide cognitive structure for discriminating between small problems students can resolve and
understand big problems require adult intervention.
Increase feelings of self-esteem as students successfully resolve conflicts within the structured
setting and hopefully in their own lives.
Develop the link between home and school to promote using Kelso’s Choices in all aspects of
the student’s lives.
Provides students with an effective conflict resolution tool recognizing it is not always going
to be effective. Sometimes adult intervention is required with small problems.
Provide a safe and non-threatening place for students to practice and internalize their newly
developed problem solving skills.
And of course, spend some time with Kelso, Lily and their other frog friends!!

RE-CYCLE YOUR ELECTRONICS
Drive 4UR School - Thanks McAllister Ford for delivering our cheque for
$2020 in a white, Ford truck. Representatives are pictured above with school
fundraising committee members Mrs. Callighen, Ms. Shoveller, Mrs. Donis and
Mrs. Kneebone, as well as students from Mrs. Callighens’s class.

the volunteers who manned the dumpster
- Ross Nixon, Darcy Fridgen, Margaret
McCombe, Ray McCombe, Kelvin
Somerville, Katie Clattenburg, Dalton

is on its way!
We extend our very sincere appreciation and thanks to Allison Parker and Mrs. Marilyn Parker (pictured above)
who have worked countless hours on moving our Alexander Reid library to its new location at the front of the
school. When they are not working in our new library, Allison is a student at ADHS and Mrs. Parker is one of
our lunch supervisors. All books needed to be packed up and then sorted and placed on the shelves again in the
new library. As you probably know, the old location of the library is now one of our new kindergarten
classrooms. The library is now open again for students to use. Thank you!
Mrs. Steele's grade 3/4 class has
been collecting plastic milk bags to
make sleeping mats for 3rd world
countries. Thank you
to everyone for
sending them in.
Right now they have
all they can use.
Please do not send any
more in until further
notice.
Family Math
Mrs. Okum (AJ Charbonneau) and
Mrs. Stadnyk (RCDSB Consultant) will be
facilitating Junior Family Math workshops
for families of AJ Charbonneau and Walter
Zadow students. A letter was sent home
with grades 4 to 6 students outlining the
program. We hope that some of our
families will take advantage of this unique
opportunity to provide families with ideas
and activities to help parents work with
their children at home on math. The dates
of the workshops are November 11, 18 and
25th. If you missed the note, please
contact the school before November 1st.

was a loonie for every person in
our building. Since there are
406 students and staff, we
actually raised over $2 a person.
Way to go Wild Cats!

PARENT-TEACHER
INTERVIEWS
will be held on
Thursday, Nov. 14 in the
evening and Friday, Nov. 15 in
the morning. Please watch for
the form to request an
interview time which will be
going home shortly.
All forms need to be returned
to the school by
Friday, Nov. 8th.
Thank you for your support of our recent Norcard Gift
Shoppe campaign. The retail sales totalled $3589 with our
school receiving 50% of this as profit ($1794.50). This will
help our fund for various programs. Thanks also to Susan
(last name not provided) for the $20 donation to this
campaign.
Every $25 sale entitled the seller to an entry for the draw to
receive a Polaroid Tablet. We had students with a single
entry and others with as many as twelve entries. The winner
of the tablet was grade 5 student, Hayden Simpson!
Congratulations Hayden! Enjoy your new tablet!
Pictured above, Mrs. Callighen presents Hayden Simpson
with his new Polaroid tablet he won from the Norcard
campaign. Thanks Mrs. Callighen for running this
fundraiser!
Our next campaign is nut free cookie dough and coffee.
This begins Nov. 11th and will run until Nov. 22nd. Because
the dough is a frozen food product, this campaign will not
have an on-line or out of town delivery option. You will be
notified when the coffee and cookie dough are expected to
arrive at the school, so you can arrange to pick it up.
Thanks, in advance, for your support of another project at
WZPS.
