Synergy is Everywhere in Nature

Flock of birds, V formation? Can fly 71% farther,
tired goes to back, honk to encourage, wounded =
two join to help.

Synergy is achieved when two or more people
work together to create a better solution than either
could alone. It’s not your way or my way but a
better way, a higher way. Learning to synergize is
like learning V formations.

Good teams are made of it.

A good band has it.

What is synergy?
Synergy is…
Synergy is NOT…


Celebrating
differences
 Teamwork
 Open-mindedness
 Finding new and
better ways
Tolerating
differences
 Working
independently
 Thinking you’re
always right
 Compromise
How do you handle diversity?
There are three possible approaches…
1. Shun diversity Shunner
-
Afraid of differences
Convinced that their way of life is the “right” or “best” way
Disturbed that someone may have different skin color,
worship a different God, or speak a different language.
2. Tolerate diversity Tolerator
-
Puts up with diversity
Motto is “You do your thing, I’ll do mine.”
Believes everyone has the right to be different, but doesn’t
embrace it
See differences as hurdles and not potential strengths
3. Celebrate diversity Celebrator
-
Value differences and sees them as advantages
Realize 2 people who think different can achieve more
than 2 people who think alike.
Roadblocks to Celebrating
Differences

Ignorance: Clueless. Based on a lack of
understanding of how other people believe,
think, feel or have been through.

Cliques: Wanting to be with those you are
comfortable with is ok. It becomes a problem
when your group of friends excludes or rejects
others who are not like them.

Prejudice: Forming an opinion about someone
before you know anything about the person.

everyone else, be proud of and

qualities
Getting to Synergy…
ACTION PLAN
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Define the problem or opportunity
Seek first to understand! ( listen to other
ideas)
Seek to be understood! (share your ideas)
Brainstorm (two brains are better than one!)
Find the best solution! (a.k.a. the “High
Way)
