ROAM, a way to serve
ROAM is an outreach ministry of the Church of the Nazarene.

their time and skills in meaningful Christian service
through the Church of the Nazarene related mission agencies,

Ask what you can do for Jesus
By Dean W. Brickey
"Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which
is your reasonable service." - Romans 12:1
The Apostle Paul's advice to the Romans also speaks loudly to us
ROAMans, as I was reminded earlier this spring while reading a daily
devotional from Our Daily Bread. On April 25, the magazine recalled the
words of President John F. Kennedy during his only inaugural address.
I'm sure you, too, remember the famous challenge he issued to
Americans: "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you
can do for your country."
He renewed a call for citizens to surrender their lives in sacrifice and service to others. His words
especially inspired the sons and daughters of men and women who had served their country in war. And
they should inspire us, too, as we serve the Lord by using our talents to build his Kingdom.
Kennedy's meaning was clear: What their parents purchased, often with their very lives, must now be
protected by peaceful means. An army of volunteers arose to answer that call, and through the decades
they have accomplished an immeasurable amount of humanitarian work around the globe. ROAM is a much
smaller army, but an army of workers it is, nevertheless. And I want to thank you for your efforts serving
the Lord through serving others.
Centuries earlier, the apostle Paul issued a similar call to Christians in the opening verses of Romans 12.
He urged us to give our bodies as "living sacrifices" in service to the One who paid with His life for our sins.
This spiritual sacrifice must be more than words; it must be an investment of our lives in the physical,
emotional, and spiritual well-being of others. In Romans 12:1, Paul encouraged us to exhibit behavior
pleasing to God. However, in Verse 2, he encouraged us to renew our minds as well. God wants us to be
totally His in both actions and thoughts. Best of all, we can serve at our home churches or wherever we can
tow or drive our RVs. As Our Daily Bread paraphrased Kennedy: "Don't always ask Jesus what He can do for
you; ask Jesus what you can do for Him."

Prime Time Retreat
Duane and Jean Morford
In May, we represented ROAM at the 2015 Prime Time Retreat in Colorado Springs. Prime Time is an
organization within the Church of the Nazarene to minister to Senior Adults. Although anyone is eligible to
join RVs On A Mission, most of our members are senior adults so the board felt it was worthwhile to be
represented at this retreat. We talked with many people, especially on the registration day. We also
presented a workshop about ROAM. Those who attended were very interested and we hope to see their
names on the membership list soon and have the opportunity to work with them in the future.
California District Assemblies
Randy and Cindy Woods
We had a good time representing ROAM at two District Assemblies in California. We spoke with many
people and felt like we increased awareness of ROAM. Many people were surprised this was part of our
denomination. We spoke with a couple pastors who said they thought they could use ROAM's help. Overall,
we feel it was good exposure for ROAM.
Thanks to the Chuck and Ginny Hampton for working on coverage for SW events.
Joplin and KY District Assemblies
Thank you to John and Linda Lewis for representing ROAM at the Joplin District Assembly. John
commented, "We had three people sign up for the newsletter and I believe these might be possible future
ROAMers." They also shared with us that they "spent 2 1/2 days at the KY District Assembly. The assembly
went well and we had some interest in ROAM. Gave out lots of materials and had six sign up for the
newsletter."
Eastern Michigan District NMI Convention and Assembly
Thank you to Bob and Millie Coward for manning the table for ROAM at Eastern Michigan District NMI
Convention and Assembly.
Northwest District Assembly
Floyd and Maryanne Davis
We were able to visit with a good number of people and hand out information. Several couples seemed to
be quite interested, but time will tell if they join ROAM. The 'seeds' were planted!
Dean Brickey and David Wheelock are working at NW events.
Jim and Joy Stewart are working at events in the South and East.
Al and Charlene Hawkins & Tony and Lynnette Siler are working at IN events.
Dan and Trecia Church and Terrell and Donna Earnest have covered some South Central events.
Others may be working at upcoming events in various regions.
If we've forgotten to mention someone, please know we do appreciate your help!

April 2015
We had enjoyed our time at Foothills Camp and Retreat Center in October, 2014 and we knew there was
a lot that ROAMers could do to help. Bruce talked to many ROAMers at Lake Placid CCC encouraging them
to stop and help on their way home.
George and Lisa Weeks and Al and Charlene Hawkins accepted his invitation. George and Lisa got there
early and went right to work. He put in a new water heater, started replacing broken water pipes, and
repaired broken doors.
The Hawkins and Hoffmans arrived within minutes of each other.
Since Al got experience laying tile at LPCCC, Michael put him to work tiling the restrooms that Bruce and
I worked on in the fall. Bruce was Al's faithful assistant. We ladies sanded, primed, and painted the
restroom stalls. The stalls were installed by Michael, George, and Bruce. The restrooms look very nice. We
ladies also helped by cleaning in the dorms and conference center.
We became a close knit group as we shared an
Easter potluck including camp directors Michael and
Tonya Mayfield and their children Braden and Brailey. I
had the children help me make resurrection rolls.
We went into the Great Smoky Mountains National
Park and visited Cade's Cove. We had devotions
together, ate out, and played games. We became close
as we worked, worshiped, and played together. We will
be anxious to be back together again.
Al and Charlene Hawkins shared "Michael and his
family are so appreciative of every small
accomplishment. There is so much to be done. We are
so encouraged about what is happening there and the
vision Mike has for the future. This location offers so
much to do in time off. We must encourage this project to others!"

CALERA, Ala. - The Rev. Charles "Chuck" Parish is sold on RVs On A Mission.
Pastor Parish, his wife, Renee, and one of their sons are in their first year as
directors at Rolling Hills Camp & Retreat Center.
They enjoyed working with Maine residents Irving Humphrey and his cousin
Beverly Hagar through the winter.
"We just had two ROAM volunteers who left today," Parish wrote in early March.
"They had been here since November and had become part of our Rolling Hills
family. It was difficult for them and for us to say, 'Goodbye.' ROAM is such a great
program for the church."
Parish, 56, was a pastor for more than 20 years, serving in Kingman, Ariz.,
Tularosa, N.M., Metropolis, Ill., and Vicksburg, Miss. The Parishes and their three sons served as
missionaries in Papua New Guinea from 1998-2001, then Chuck and Renee worked at the Nazarene Global
Ministries Center in Kansas City from 2001-2009.
"Directing a camp is new to us and we are loving it," he said. "Our oldest son is married and lives in
Olathe, Kan. Our middle son just graduated from the University of Missouri Kansas City and now works in
Austin, Tex. Our "baby" Mike, is 25 and lives on the campground and works full time as our maintenance
supervisor."
Rolling Hills has one other full-time maintenance person, a part-time housekeeper and a full-time RV park
manager and cook. The RV park has 30- and 50-amp hook-ups.
More information about the camp is available from the website www.rollinghillscamp.org. It also has
a Facebook page.
Dan and Trecia Church, Board Members and ROAM Representatives for the South Central Region,
shared this with us about a service they attended at the Whitney Church of the Nazarene.
"We had a great experience in Whitney, TX Church of the
Nazarene. The WHOLE service was dedicated to ROAM!
They honored long-time ROAMers Jack and Kay Grover
with a plaque and dedicated the building to ROAM! It was
very encouraging!"
We are very proud of the Grovers and appreciate their
dedication to serving through ROAM at camps and churches.
