By incorporating family night into our program, we hope that times spent during these events will bring lasting memories. This month we’ll celebrate our Mothers of The Christopher Center with a fabulous Tea Party while enjoying quality time together. The Tea Party will take place in the Sun Room on Thursday, May 11, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Family and friends are invited to come enjoy laughter, conversation, and memories as they sip on a variety of teas and nibble on delectable sandwiches, petit fours and glazed scones. Memorial Day Memorial Day is a day to remember fallen soldiers, but many people also celebrate this day by remembering all their loved ones who have passed away. Monday, May 29, at 9:30 a.m. we’ll enjoy a special program. May Special Events Scenic Drive Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. weather permitting. If you would like to go with your loved one on the drive please sign up with Cherie by the Friday before the drive. Pet Therapy Pet Therapy Dog, Mr. McGee will visit us on Wednesday, May 17, at 2:00 p.m. Pet Therapy Dogs, Heidi and Houdini will visit us on Saturday, May 13th & 27th at 10:30 a.m. Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Cinco de Mayo (meaning "fifth of May") commemorates Mexico's victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5,1862. The day is celebrated by many Mexicans, and those with Mexican ties with festivals and parades. Join us Friday, May 5, at 10:30 a.m. It's time to party, amigos. No time for a siesta, it's time to fiesta! Let's party down Mexico style! Music and Fun Join resident volunteer, Eileen Bracuti, for “Music & Fun on Wednesday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. in the Music Room for a fun filled hour of music and song. Let’s Dine Together! Starting this month the Christopher Center residents will have the opportunity to dine with Activity Coordinator, Cherie Allen for lunch. Cherie will invite three residents once a week to dine with her for lunch under the Gazebo. Come enjoy the sunshine as we reflect back on our favorite spring time memories. What’s Cooking? This month, Activity Coordinator, Cherie Allen invites you to join her in the dining room on Wednesdays for “Baking with Cherie.” This month we will be making Chocolate Mint Chip Brownies, Strawberry Peach Pie, Lemon Lavender Cupcakes, Sugar Cookie Fruit Tarts, and Berry Clafoutis. The residents will enjoy eating their goodies during snack time. Kentucky Derby 143rd (4-7p.m. on NBC) The Christopher Center family will kick the 143rd Kentucky Derby off on Friday, May 5, at 2:30 p.m. We’ll serve Mint Julep Mocktails and Kentucky Derby Pie for an afternoon snack followed with a game of horseshoes in the Sunroom. Who will claim the garland of roses and a spot in horse racing history? Saturday, May 6, from 2:30-7:30 p.m. NBC Sports provides live coverage of Kentucky Derby 143rd and showcases the fascinating equine and human competitors chasing fortune and glory en-route to the Derby Winner’s Circle. The two-hour telecast also highlights the fantastic spectacle behind “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” at the iconic Churchill Down Racetrack in Louisville, Ky. Jodi Stevens & Friends Join your neighbors in the Living Room for a morning of fellowship and fun on Monday, May 15, at 11:00 a.m., for a sing-a-long with Jodi Stevens and Friends. Monthly Movie Matinee “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” Based on Truman Capote's novel, this is the story of a young woman in New York City who meets a young man when he moves into her apartment building. He is with an older woman who is very wealthy, but he wants to be a writer. She is working as an expensive escort and searching for a rich, older man to marry. Join your friends in the Christopher Center Music Room on Tuesday, May 16, at 2:30 p.m. as we enjoy watching the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Flower Moon Day The full moon of May is called the "Flower Moon" by Native Americans because by this time of the year, flowers are everywhere. Thursday, May 25, at 2:30 p.m. well learn about Full moons and play a game of flower bingo. We’ll serve Moon Pies during the activity. Adopt-A-Grandparent Program This month is National Wildflower Week it is a week to encourage the observation, cultivation, and preservation of wildflowers. To honor National Wildflower week grandparents will partner with their grandchild on Wednesday, May 31, at 2:00 p.m. to make flower arrangement centerpieces that will be displayed through out the Christopher Center. Tell me something about your Mother? Elsie-She made beautiful clothes for me. She did her own sewing and made her own patterns. She was very good to me. Janice-It was so nice with her. She had five kids and was a real good cook. Judy-She gave 100% of herself to everyone. Elaine-My mother didn’t like to be in charge, but we did a lot of traveling. Violet-She was a good mom. Bob-She was a very good woman. She did so much for her kids and was amazing. Gerri-My mother was pretty nice, and we had a nice house. Kay-She worked full time, sewed her own clothes, took us shopping and cleaned the house. Raymond-She was a good woman. Dorothy-My mama took care of the kids and we would always do things together. Anne-My mom is behind me all the time, and I love her. Doris Murphy-It was a give and take situation with my mother. Joanne-She is long, long gone. Maggie-My mother taught me how to do everything in the world, especially being good. She loved me and was wonderful. Doris Marshall-We had a lot of good times. She was a beautiful lady, kind and wonderful. She raised four girls and worked for UVA. Mac-She was a college graduate. She took me to air shows, horse shows. She was very involved with the children. Mama was a very caring person and was very independent. Paul-She was a good woman and a country girl. Henny-My mother was the best thing that ever happened to me. She was an angel. She brought up a six children with no help. She passed away on her 80th Birthday. She worked everyday and took care of a sick husband. Wonderful Mother, I’ll never forget her. Pauline-Mama was a very good and wonderful mother. She loved her kids. She was born in Europe and was always working and cooking for her kids. Dotty Buswell-She was a good mother, but she was strict. She loved to cook pot roast. She had 7 kids, and I was number 6. Eliana-She is still alive and lives in the country.
