20. Staying Alive 3/13/2017 EQOD: Explain how organisms depend on living and nonliving resources within their environments. Video Initial Thoughts: How do animals and plants survive? Evidence I: OMG Organisms, Populations and Eco huh? In a level 0 voice, write down a list of 5 your favorite foods! They can be snacks, meals, dessert, anything! Example: Mr.Lerma Cinnabon (Cinnamon Rolls) Arroz con leche (Rice Pudding) Carne Asada Fries Fettuccini Alfredo Dr.Pepper Evidence I: OMG Organisms, Populations and Eco huh? In a level 0 voice, now write down 2 of the ingredients in those food items. Try not to repeat if you can. Example: Mr.Lerma Cinnabon (Cinnamon Rolls): Flour and sugar Arroz con leche (Rice Pudding): Rice and Milk Carne Asada Fries: Potatoes and Beef Fettuccini Alfredo: Flour and Milk Dr.Pepper: Water and Flavorings Evidence I: OMG Organisms, Populations and Eco huh? In a level 0 voice, now write down 2 of the ingredients in those food items. Try not to repeat if you can. Example: Mr.Lerma Cinnabon (Cinnamon Rolls): Flour and sugar Arroz con leche (Rice Pudding): Rice and Milk Carne Asada Fries: Potatoes and Beef Fettuccini Alfredo: Flour and Milk Dr.Pepper: Water and Flavorings Why do we eat food? Where do we get these ingredients from? Evidence I: OMG Organisms, Populations and Eco huh? Just like humans, organisms need resources, like food and water, to survive. An organism is any living thing that has the ability to act or function independently. A group of the same species of organisms living in the same region is called a population. Example: You -> Organism Group of friends going to the same school-> Population Group of friends going to schools in different cities -> Not a population Dog -> Organism Group of Dogs -> Population Group of Dogs AND Humans -> Not a population Evidence I: OMG Organisms, Populations and Eco huh? Example: 1. You -> Organism 2. Group of friends going to the same school-> Population 3. Group of friends going to schools in different cities -> Not a population 1. Dog -> Organism 2. Group of Dogs -> Population 3. Group of Dogs AND Humans -> Not a population Evidence I: OMG Organisms, Populations and Eco huh? Populations of organisms live in an ecosystem. Just the way we live in the city of National City, San Diego, Chula Vista, etc. An ecosystem is a biological (living) community of interacting organisms and their physical environment. How do you interact with other students in school? Let’s say there is an open lot in downtown San Diego, what can people do with it in the city? How do bears interact with other animals, like fish, in the forest? Let’s say there is an open cave in the forest, what can bears do with the cave? Evidence I: OMG Organisms, Populations and Eco huh? Before we end for today, use your notes to answer this question on a post-it Explain how does a single organism relate to a population and their ecosystem. Examples: Organism Population Ecosystem Cactus Cacti Desert Caterpillar Army of Caterpillars Forest Lion Pride of Lions Savannah Evidence I: OMG Organisms, Populations and Eco huh? Review Video 1. Community: All type of living things in ONE area! 2. Individual Round: Student gets a point for every right answer 3. Speed Round: Class gets a point for every right answer Evidence I: OMG Organisms, Populations and Eco huh? What is an ecosystem? How does an organism relate to an ecosystem? Evidence II: Biotic or Abiotic? Let’s look at the T-Chart below. Predict what the terms Biotic and Abiotic mean. Hint: What does the root word Bio mean? Hint 2: The root word A- means not. Evidence II: Biotic or Abiotic? Biotic: Living Factors that affect organisms! Ex: Bees, Trees, Bunnies Abiotic: Nonliving factors that affect organisms Ex: Sun, Rock and Thunder Storms Keep this in mind for the next activity! Evidence II: Biotic or Abiotic? Work with your partner to sort the following items into Biotic or Abiotic factors List: Fire, Whale, Fish, Clouds, Snail, Flower, Grass, Air, Sand, Rocks, Birds, Ants, Bread, Cars, Grapes, Sunlight, Trees, Temperature, Wind, Water Biotic Abiotic Evidence II: Biotic or Abiotic? Why would an organism need abiotic resources like sunlight, water, wind and more? Why would an organism need biotic factors like grass, trees, and other animals? How and where does an organism attain (get) all these factors? Hint: It has to do with a vocabulary word. Evidence II: Biotic or Abiotic? 1. Write the question in your exit ticket sheet 2. Answer the question in a full sentence using the sentence frame 3. Provide evidence from your notebook! Question: How do organisms attain (get) abiotic and biotic factors and why are they important? Organisms attain abiotic and biotic factors by ____________________ with their ________________. They are important because ________________________________. My evidence for this is this quote from Evidence I/II in “Staying Alive”, “_______________________________________________________” Analysis (10 minutes) 1. Explain how does a single organism relate to a population and their ecosystem. (L1) 2. How do organisms attain abiotic and biotic factors and why are they important? (L2) 3. Predict how animals can cope with not getting enough resources. (L3) Relate = Show a connection Cope = deal with something difficult Reflection: Create a rhyme to help remember the resources that animals and plants need to survive. Mr. Lerma’s Example: Abiotic water is what I need To plant my beautiful seed That will grow into a tree Which is biotic, I guarantee! Summary, Big Idea and Vocab Take 7 minutes to work in a level 0 silence voice on your summary. EQOD: Explain how organisms depend on living and nonliving resources within their environments Big Idea: New Vocabulary Terms: Organism, Community, Ecosystem, Abiotic, Biotic. Must update on your own in the back of your journal along with a definition and a picture.
