Newsletter No.10 - Haylands Primary School

Dear Parents and Carers,
Assembly
theme for this
week
Well done to all children, staff and parents for the great effort this
week with our Harry Potter theme. A visit from Rosie the Roufous
Legged owl provided the initial stimulus for the work. Since then the
children have written some incredible non-chronological reports
about this majestic creature. Look out for a sample of this work on
the website, with examples of writing from reception to year six. A
special thank you to Mrs Clarke, for organising and leading this
event. Please see page 4 of the newsletter for Mrs Clarke’s report
on the Harry Potter Day.

Year 1 News
Our theme for assemblies this week relates to
perseverance. Through the work on this key learning
characteristic, children begin to see that successful
learners don’t give up, see mistakes as part of
learning, and show “stickability”. Monday’s assembly
focused on an amazing man called Nick Vujicic. See
the Youtube website to find out more.

Thank you to those parents who have already signed up to join me in a working group,
which will partly take the form of an open forum. This will provide me with an
opportunity to talk about the current developments and progress of the school and
allow me to gather your thoughts, views and ideas. The first meeting will take place
after half term on Tuesday 24th February at 5:30pm. If you are interested please leave
your name with Miss Rayment in the office, either pop in or email:

Thank you,
Mr Bailey

3MH CLASS ASSEMBLY 30.01.15
Year 3 did a fabulous job last week of demonstrating how food travels through our bodies. The
children sang about how the digestive system
works, with a very entertaining song.
5LF CLASS ASSEMBLY 06.02.15
Today 5LF based the assembly all about what we have
been learning in science. We talked to the rest of the
school about reversible and irreversible changes and
forces. We showed the rest of the school some of the
experiments we have carried out in class, we showed
them how mixing vinegar (an acid) with bicarbonate of
soda causes a chemical reaction and how this can inflate
a balloon on top of a bottle. We also showed them how
the process of chromatography works. We performed a
song all about the forces around us. Did you know without the force of friction we wouldn’t be able to move
around easily? Report by 5LF
Y6 FOOTBALL MATCH REPORT - DOVER PARK VS HAYLANDS PRIMARY 30.01.15
Haylands started their campaign in the Ryde premier league with a game against Dover Park. It was played on a
slanted pitch which did not help the players. Haylands started the better team, scoring two goals inside 10 minutes.
Then another just before half time with Stanley Harrison scoring the goals. In the second half, Dover Park stepped
up a gear scoring 2 goals to make it 3-2, then equalised making it 3-3. It could have been 4-3 to Haylands but the
goalkeeper saved it on to the post. Some of our players were complaining that the ball went over the line but I
think we need goal line technology to know for sure!
The Haylands team were: Daniel Williams, Liam Mwamuka, Tyla Hodgson, Tyler Kirkland, Joe Pountney, Jamie Scott,
Adam Todd and Stanley Harrison. Report by Adam Todd Y6

Year 1 are Learning Lots!
In literacy we have been retelling the Story of ‘The Gruffalo’. We had to think
of some good describing words.
In numeracy we have been learning about capacity. We are now able to say how
much different containers have got in them. We have also been learning to count in
2s.
In Science we have been finding out facts about the sun. Mrs Bowbrick and Mrs
Whitty were really impressed with our homework!
AND FINALLY....
We had a surprise visit from an owl who belonged to
‘Wizardo the Wizard’. We had to write back to him about how to look after owls!
3
Wow! Well done Haylands! Harry Potter
day in school was a huge success; we were
overwhelmed by the effort put in to creating super costumes. Children and staff
came to school as wizards, owls, houseelves and muggles. The day was the final
part of a Harry Potter focused week which
started last Friday with a visit by Rosie the
owl from the Owl and Monkey Haven.
Rosie’s visit was then the focus for our writing this week and we have all produced
non-chronological reports about owls.
On Thursday
evening we
hosted Haylands’ first ever
Harry Potter
Book Night.
This was a national event
and we were
excited to be
taking part.
The evening began once all of our wizards were seated in their houses.
Miss Pope then read an extract from the Philosopher’s Stone. An evening of fun activities then ensued- a treasure hunt, Potter Pictionary, a
Harry Potter quiz and a Make Your Own Hedwig craft were enjoyed by
all. We concluded the events with a well-deserved glass of Butterbeer and a chocolate wand whilst ‘Professor
Trelawney’ read a final extract.
Many thanks to all the parents and children who made the evening so enjoyable. Thanks also to the Friends of
Haylands for all their help with refreshments. Finally, thanks to the staff who gave of their time in order for this
event to take place. We can now look forward to the next one!

Clubs places are limited

weeks until the Easter Holiday.
We have been notified of cases of both head lice and threadworms in school recently.
Please check your child’s hair for signs of head lice over the weekend and treat as necessary. Head lice can be treated
by wet combing with plenty of conditioner and a special fine tooth comb.
If you think you or your child may have threadworms, you can usually treat the infection yourself with medication
available at pharmacies without prescription. During treatment and for a few weeks afterwards, it is also important to
follow strict hygiene measures to avoid spreading the threadworm eggs.
It is not always possible to prevent a threadworm infection, but you can significantly reduce your risk by always maintaining good hygiene and encouraging children to do the same. We do this in school by encouraging the children to
wash their hands regularly, particularly after going to the toilet and before mealtimes.
