➢
Resolution being brought forth at SUA: Divestment
Technicality that happened two years ago at SUA that got overturned
He had cited the incorrect section of a bylaws
Now this resolution is being brought back up
Not arguing for divestment: divestment already passed
The UCs invest in companies that support Palestine-Taking away from companies for that specific reason
The only ones that didn’t divest is Merced and Santa Barbara
Used unapproved minutes
Did it over summer so no one could object
The UC regents have publicly stated that they are not divesting anyone from Israel
Shaz overstepped his boundaries- he had murmured the bylaws had an obligation to be unbiased and he
admitted his mistake
That completely wiped out anything that can happen after because he stated the wrong bylaws
That’s why he put it froth in the summer because of his mistake
Divestment bill didn’t pass you need a 2/3 vote
He said the wrong thing and no one heard him say the wrong thing
Last year it was voted you could appeal a decision no matter when it was made.
On Tuesday they will vote if they believe the decision of voting over summer was constitutional or
unconstitutional
If it does pass, the conversation could keep going (there is a constitutional way to do that)
He said the right rule but a completely different paragraph
Girl from Jewish community at large wants the vote to be postponed until Tuesday because not enough
people know the subject
Used unofficial minutes
There is no where in the bylaws that you have to state the bylaws
Everyone in the room understood what was happening
They voted on it and it passed- many people said they knew what was happening
His actions might have been swayed because of his beliefs
Everyone heard him say we are suspending the 2/3s
Even if one of the senators didn’t understand, it was grounds to be overturned
All senators came out and said they knew what was happening
Went petitioning and got over 500 citizens- only 10 people said no
SUA voted for divestment
We should be more focused on the legality

-SUA’s CLASS Survey Presentation by Seamus Howard• Class survey- everyone got an email about it Tuesday
o engages student opinions on a variety of topics based on academics
• 1568 people took the survey last year
• Some people aren’t getting the necessary classes needed for their majors, GEs, etc
• A lot of people do crash classes in order to get put on the waitlist- can be very beneficial
• Shuffling- where students on the waitlist drop the class.
• When you have a hard time getting in the class and you do need the class, crash it (proves to work)
• 29.1% are in GE classes/progressive classes that don’t necessarily pertain to major but helps them get
through college
• waitlisted students are on a standstill
• Students often get off the waitlist a lot of times just by being dropped
o Some classes make you perform well on the first test or you get dropped immediately
• Network crashes frequently during every period of enrollment
• Crashing is a serious commitment
o Potentially hurting focus in other classes
o Might be late on quizzes/tests etc
• Only 64% of people feel that they are on track to graduate on time
• Many people plan to be here for 5 years- more money that we don’t have
• Almost half of the students who will not graduate on time expect to be there for two or more units.
• Trying to increase number of classes
o Unlikely to happen

-FUNDING REQUESTAlternative Spring Break
-BUDGET: $85
-AMOUNT REQUESTED: $85
-WHAT: Program of service for spring break. Special and unique because they are a class. This year they are in
Watsonville. High number of applicants of this year so they are running through budget concerns. More people
applied to receive the scholarship- trying to expand budget so that they can fund more people to attend
-WHY: Money is funding their $35 fee everyone else has to pay
-FUNDING REQUESTColleges Against Cancer Funding Request
-BUDGET: $3320
-AMOUNT REQUESTED: $400
-WHAT: To bring cancer awareness to UCSC. Gives everyone a chance to remember those who people have lost due
to cancer and fight back against the disease. Money goes toward funding cancer research, etc. Held in OPERS
during spring quarter. Students can make teams
-WHY: Supports theme of community
-FUNDING REQUESTMock Trial at UCSC Funding Request
-BUDGET: $3182
-AMOUNT REQUESTED: $300
-WHAT: Mock trial is a collegiate competition from teams all over the country and basically simulate a real court case.
Get to present skills in front of real judges. They have won many awards and try to promote good image for UCSC.
They made it to open round championship series. Ready to go to nationals in North Carolina this year. They are
headed to Fresno for regionals and will cost the club around 3k. Food and gas will be covered by students if they
can’t cover those fees. UCLA, Stanford, etc gets real funding from their school and they are just a body of students
self coaching, with less resources. Reasons why the costs have gone up this year is because they are trying to take
as many people as possible.
-WHY: Really applies to our theme of social justice; gain skills to defend minorities/those who aren’t treated as fairly.

-AMOUNT REQUESTED: $300
-WHAT: Broadcast on channel 16 and online at the url on the flier being passed around. Comprised of three orgs.
One rep from everyone of the three orgs. Recently funded for new camera/ sound equipment/etc. Money would go
toward updating their account that allows them to go live online and on television. Recently got funding from 8 and
reached out to SUA to get more money and are waiting to hear back. By winter quarter of next year they hope to
have their viewership so solid that they can start putting ads in and getting money from that. There is close to 100
students in the org. Around 20 members from college ten?

-EVENT/PROGRAM: El Centro and the Cesar Chavez Convocation Committee
-BUDGET: $1000
-AMOUNT REQUESTED: $400
-WHAT: Event is to expose students to Cesar Chavez’s activism and to show future effective ways of activism that we
can learn from him. Students can create change- usually have 400 students attend the event it is in the c9/c10 mpr.
Bringing in speakers that will motivate students during spring quarter. Money will go towards publicity for the event.
Heard back from crown and Stevenson already. The event is May 17th from 7-9pm. Club cards are small flyeringposts on bus stops/big lecture halls/ table in front of dining halls with these small cards.
QUEER FASHION SHOW Funding Request (8:10pm - 8:15pm)
-EVENT/PROGRAM: QUEER FASHION SHOW
-BUDGET: $2500
-AMOUNT REQUESTED: $300
-WHAT: Been around for 30 years- started crown/Merrill in the 80s. Very body positive space wearing all of these
crazy clothes, then it became this annual event. Started bringing in social justice issues about identity, gender,
sexuality, skin color, etc. Became more of theatrical thing over time and are now selling tickets and giving the money
back to queer orgs. Last year they raised $2500. Mural project may be used with the money. May 13th. Blend of
different ways of expression. Tickets are $5-$10 (aware of economic difficulties) Biggest cost is tech crew because it
is a non negotiable cost- students working late should be paid for their hard work (being aware and respectful of
student labor) Almost received $2000 of funding so far. Two free tickets for college 10 people. Really strong sense
of community and acceptance and celebration.
