Marian Anderson and Me

Marian Anderson and Me
By Natalie Gumagay
Introdution
Marian Anderson was a singer. She was the first Black person to
sing at the Metropolitan Opera. She also sang at the Lincoln
Memorial. She showed effort, motivation and persistence to
become a well known African American singer.
Marian Anderson’s Accomplishment
As a child in 1897 Marian loved to sing. When
she was in school she started private voice
lessons to become a better singer. The music
school would not accept African American
students. But she did not give up. She continued
to sing and wanted to perform at Constitution
Hall but they would not let African American
singers sing. So she was asked to sing at the
Lincoln Memorial. In 1955 Marian was the first
African American singer to sing at the
Metropolitan Opera in New York. Opera is a play
in which all or most of the words are sung.
Marian Anderson used effort, motivation, and
persistence to reach her goal of becoming a
singer.
Marian Anderson and Me
Marian Anderson and I have both worked hard to
achieve our goals. Marian Anderson worked hard to
achieve her goal of becoming a famous singer. I worked
hard to achieve my goal of being a better softball
player.
My Accomplishment
My goal was to be a good softball player. I wanted to
play softball but I could not catch the balls. At softball
practice I practiced catching the ball. I caught some
balls but I dropped some too. I was good at batting but
not so good at fielding. So at practice I worked hard at
fielding and sometimes batting. Now I am playing much
better and my team is winning many games. I reached
my goal of being a better softball player.
Conclusion
Marian Anderson and I both
worked hard to achieve our
goals. I bet if you work hard
you will reach your goal too!
