The North Shore Ski Trail System includes over 150 km of groomed and tracked trails. This map is one
of a three part map system, as shown above. Map 1 includes the area from Tofte to Oberg Mountain.
Map 2 goes from the Lutsen area to east of Solbakken Resort. Map 3 includes the trails in the Cascade
and Deer Yard Lake areas. Maps are available at area resorts, select shops, and at the Cook County
Visitors Bureau Information Centers in Grand Marais and Tofte.
2. Ski under control.
3. When considering how far to ski, consider (a) the possibility of becoming
tired, (b) the possibility of becoming
cold, (c) the possibility of facing the
wind on the return trip, and (d) the
possibility of a change in weather.
4. Remember that darkness arrives quickly during winter months.
5. Never ski alone in isolated or remote
areas. Unfortunately, injuries can happen to anyone.
6. If you are lost, do not leave the marked
trails.
7.Changing snow and weather conditions can affect the difficulty level of
the trail.
2013
Nowhere else will you find
such an extensive system of
wilderness ski trails with such
a high standard of grooming.
Enjoy!

Pioneer Loop
Pioneer Loop begins near Cascade Lodge and is 8.3 km
in length. The west side of the loop has some short hills
followed by near level stretches. The east side is a long
gradual uphill climb or a long wonderful downhill run,
depending on the direction one is skiing. The loop can
be skied in either direction.
The Upper and Lower Ridge Trails are in the midst
of the Pioneer Loop and combine for a 6.3 km one
direction downhill trail that is slightly more difficult
than the Pioneer Loop. A connecting link to the east
side of the Pioneer Trail exists at the junctions of the
Upper and Lower Ridge Trails.
Lookout Mountain
The trail to Lookout Mountain involves a gradual
increase in elevation with a few fairly level stretches.
At the top there is a three sided shelter, an outdoor toilet and a rock outcropping from which there is a great
view of the Cascade River and Cascade Creek Valleys,
and Lake Superior. The distance from Cascade Lodge to
next to Lake Superior. Because this trail is so close to
the lake, the snow conditions are sometimes inadequate
for cross country skiing. All the trails are groomed with
one set of parallel tracks.
Cascade Park Trails
Halfway Trail and River Trail
These two trails are the connecting link between the
trails on the east side of the Cascade River and the
Pioneer Loop, the trail to Lookout Mountain and the
trail leading to Solbakken Resort. The lower part of the
River Trail is fairly steep.
Deer Yard Lake Area
Trailhead Parking is located on Murmur Creek Road
4 miles west of the junction of C.R. 44 and C.R. 45
(Pike Lake Road). Take C.R. 45 West to the 90 degree
turn. (Babineau Corner on map). Continue straight
onto Murmur Creek Road at Babineau Corner and drive
approximately .5 mile to the parking area. Deer Yard
loop can also be accessed by skiing up from the Pioneer
Loop trail. The main loop is 11 km long with options to
the old fire tower site and the short loop. The trail along
the lake is on gentle, rolling terrain with a long gentle
hill toward the junction at the base trail leading to the
old fire tower site. From this point eastward there is a
wonderful long downhill run. A popular option is to
ski to Cascade Lodge from the Deer Yard Loop parking
area. The longer route going along the lake and down
to Cascade Lodge is about 15 km and takes between
2 and 4 hours.
Park Trails East of the River
There are about 10 km of trails east of the river. The
trails that tend to lie parallel to the lake are fairly level
whereas the trails that point away from the lake are
quite steep. The Moose Mountain Trail is a gentle
climbing trail which leads to a shelter and nice view
of the Cascade River valley. The Lake Shore Trail is a
fairly level trail and offers a unique skiing experience
Shuttle Service to trailheads
at higher elevations is
available at Cascade Lodge
Ski Through Trail
From the bottom of Pioneer Loop you can ski west
towards the Hall Loop on an easy, almost level trail.
Bally Creek Trails
These trails comprise four loops totaling 15.5 km. The
trails are groomed with one set of parallel tracks. From
the Bally Creek Area there is a connecting trail to the
Cascade River State Park Trails which are groomed
weekly with one set of tracks. This trail provides a
good backcountry ski experience.

Lookout Mountain is 3.3 km. The trail is double tracked.
The way down is a wonderful downhill run. It can be
quite fast in some snow conditions. The view at the
top is worth the climb.
