This map is one of a three part map system, as shown above. Map 1 includes the area from Tofte to Oberg Mountain. Map 2 goes from the Lutsen area to east of Solbakken Resort. Map 3 includes the trails in the Cascade and Deer Yard Lake areas. Maps are available at area resorts, select shops, and at the Cook County Visitors Bureau Information Centers in Grand Marais and Tofte. 2. Ski under control. 3. When considering how far to ski, consider (a) the possibility of becoming tired, (b) the possibility of becoming cold, (c) the possibility of facing the wind on the return trip, and (d) the possibility of a change in weather. 4. Remember that darkness arrives quickly during winter months. 5. Never ski alone in isolated or remote areas. Unfortunately, injuries can happen to anyone. 6. If you are lost, do not leave the marked trails. 7.Changing snow and weather conditions can affect the difficulty level of the trail. 2013 Nowhere else will you find such an extensive system of wilderness ski trails with such a high standard of grooming. PAUL EAU CLAIRE ROCHESTER MADISON MILWAUKEE DES MOINES CHICAGO Pioneer Loop Pioneer Loop begins near Cascade Lodge and is 8.3 km in length. The west side of the loop has some short hills followed by near level stretches. The east side is a long gradual uphill climb or a long wonderful downhill run, depending on the direction one is skiing. The loop can be skied in either direction. The Upper and Lower Ridge Trails are in the midst of the Pioneer Loop and combine for a 6.3 km one direction downhill trail that is slightly more difficult than the Pioneer Loop. A connecting link to the east side of the Pioneer Trail exists at the junctions of the Upper and Lower Ridge Trails. Lookout Mountain The trail to Lookout Mountain involves a gradual increase in elevation with a few fairly level stretches. At the top there is a three sided shelter, an outdoor toilet and a rock outcropping from which there is a great view of the Cascade River and Cascade Creek Valleys, and Lake Superior. The distance from Cascade Lodge to next to Lake Superior. Because this trail is so close to the lake, the snow conditions are sometimes inadequate for cross country skiing. All the trails are groomed with one set of parallel tracks. Cascade Park Trails Halfway Trail and River Trail These two trails are the connecting link between the trails on the east side of the Cascade River and the Pioneer Loop, the trail to Lookout Mountain and the trail leading to Solbakken Resort. The lower part of the River Trail is fairly steep. Deer Yard Lake Area Trailhead Parking is located on Murmur Creek Road 4 miles west of the junction of C.R. 44 and C.R. 45 (Pike Lake Road). Take C.R. 45 West to the 90 degree turn. (Babineau Corner on map). Continue straight onto Murmur Creek Road at Babineau Corner and drive approximately .5 mile to the parking area. Deer Yard loop can also be accessed by skiing up from the Pioneer Loop trail. The main loop is 11 km long with options to the old fire tower site and the short loop. The trail along the lake is on gentle, rolling terrain with a long gentle hill toward the junction at the base trail leading to the old fire tower site. From this point eastward there is a wonderful long downhill run. A popular option is to ski to Cascade Lodge from the Deer Yard Loop parking area. The longer route going along the lake and down to Cascade Lodge is about 15 km and takes between 2 and 4 hours. Park Trails East of the River There are about 10 km of trails east of the river. The trails that tend to lie parallel to the lake are fairly level whereas the trails that point away from the lake are quite steep. The Moose Mountain Trail is a gentle climbing trail which leads to a shelter and nice view of the Cascade River valley. The Lake Shore Trail is a fairly level trail and offers a unique skiing experience Shuttle Service to trailheads at higher elevations is available at Cascade Lodge Ski Through Trail From the bottom of Pioneer Loop you can ski west towards the Hall Loop on an easy, almost level trail. Bally Creek Trails These trails comprise four loops totaling 15.5 km. The trails are groomed with one set of parallel tracks. From the Bally Creek Area there is a connecting trail to the Cascade River State Park Trails which are groomed weekly with one set of tracks. This trail provides a good backcountry ski experience. Lookout Mountain is 3.3 km. The trail is double tracked. The way down is a wonderful downhill run. It can be quite fast in some snow conditions.
