In fact the surf is so good here that the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre is even located at Casuarina Beach. The Tweed has over 37 kilometres of coastline and a climate that will thaw out southerners recovering from the winter chill. For water babies like my Alex, the warmer water is another big drawcard and he is thrilled to leave the wetsuit at home and break out the Fox board shorts. We fly into the Gold Coast and it’s a quick 25-minute drive in the hire car to Hastings Point. He is busy checking swell reports and tides and over the next few days he rides the waves around Cabarita, Fingal and Kingscliff. At Cabarita I watch and enjoy the foreshore walk to Norries Head, which gives views up and down the coast and a front-row seat during whale-watching season. At Kingscliff, we hire some bikes and ride along the cycleway – if you are really keen you can ride from Fingal all the way south to Pottsville – and at Fingal, we walk to the historic lighthouse and kayak on the Tweed River. Back in Hastings Point, the estuary is busy with families making sand castles, fishing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding in the calm, protected waters. It is holiday perfection. Park and play BIG4 North Star Holiday Resort at Hastings Point not only boasts a fantastic location, it’s a destination in itself. This holiday park gets it just right for families of any age and size. The resort offers a range of accommodation styles to suit all budgets and tastes, from powered camping and caravan sites to self-contained twobedroom chalets and luxury three-bedroom poolside villas. We are in a two-bedroom chalet which suits our needs perfectly. The resort’s Neptune’s Castle, a gigantic indoor play centre with ball pit, indoor slides and flying fox, is also home to a free kids’ club that runs during off-peak weekends and every day of the school holidays. Add to that North Star’s awesome new two-storey water park, Sammy’s Adventure Lagoon, and you can be pretty sure your kids won’t want to leave. The water park has more than 66 interactive water features including water slides, water cannons, a water piano and a massive bucket that dumps 600 litres of water over the whole area every few minutes. There’s also a games room offering billiards and table tennis, a tennis court, three seasonally heated tropical pools – complete with slides and a pool for the toddlers – and a great café. Mum and dad aren’t forgotten either with the perfect escape right on site at the Seascape Leisure Centre & Day Spa, where you’ll find a 25-metre lap pool, spas, sauna, gym, massage room and even a beauty salon for a little holiday pampering.
