TRAILS WEST – 13-1
Traders on the Santa Fe Trail
Newspaper editor Horace Greeley encouraged many
Americans to “go West, young man, go West” in 1853 –
and many American had taken his advice in the
decades prior to the 1850s. In this quick activity, use
13-1 in CA to examine a few of the groups that moved
to the West during the early 1800s. You task for each
is to completely describe the group of people, identify
the reason(s) for their travel to the West, and
summarize the impact of their migration. The trick –
you can only use between 20 and 30 words per group.
