Days of obligation. Thank you for your stewardship of Talent, by
which you respond to God’s call to serve Him in ways you have
been gifted with. You do so by being involved in different ministries and societies of our parishes and by lending your expertise
in building up our communities and in many different fields.
Thank you for your stewardship of Treasure. Your generosity in
our regular Sunday and Holy Day collections, Capital Campaign,
Sharing God’s Blessing Appeal, maintenance and various needs is
much, much appreciated. May you be blessed with what you need
and continue to support our communities in order for us to move
on in the years ahead and be able to stay open in ministering to
you and to those who will come after you, your children and your
children’s children.
And I would like to end this letter by giving you a bit of the
statistics of Our Lady of Mercy church. In 2016 we have the following (actual count): 1,362 registered parishioners, 1,093 active
parishioners, 36 baptisms, 35 first communions, 38 confirmations,
1 wedding, and 54 funerals. Counting people at mass every Sunday, we have more or less a total of 4,000 people (of course that
includes children) at all of our five masses. I am aware that some
people are just visiting but I am also pretty sure that we still have
a few numbers of people who are not registered. So please… I beg
and encourage those who come and worship with us regularly to
take an effort and make a decision to become registered parishioners. The whole community is already delighted to have you. Be a
part of the family!
Thank you and God bless you all!
Love,
+Father Marty

Help To “Clean Up” Country Village!
Saturday, April 29
Saturday, April 29 is the date of
the Second Annual Great Jersey
City Clean-Up. This year the
OLM Chapter of Jersey City Together will take part in this effort
to make our city a cleaner, more
beautiful place.
The OLM Chapter will be
coordinating the clean-up effort
in Country Village and near our
parish property. We encourage
you to join us in this service
project. We will meet in the Maria
Room on Saturday, April 29, at 9:30 am. Volunteers will be divided into teams and assigned certain areas in our neighborhood to
collect trash and other debris. Volunteers will be provided gloves,
garbage bags, and instructions.
Our clean-up effort will end at 11:45 am and be followed by
refreshments in the Maria Room. Volunteers under the age of 14
must be accompanied by an adult.
To sign up to be part of our efforts to make our neighborhood a cleaner place send an email to [email protected]
with your name, phone number, and preferred email address. You
can also sign up by contacting the parish office at 201-434-7500.
You will also have an opportunity to sign up after our Masses
during the weekend of April 22 & 23.
Please join the OLM Chapter of Jersey City Together us in
showing that the people of our parish care about the neighborhood where we live and worship!
Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal 2017
The goal of Our Lady Of Mercy Parish this year is
$36, 302.00. As of April 9th, we have achieved 44.36%
($16,102.00) of our goal, so far. With humble heart, I am asking you to support our Archdiocese. If we go over our goal,
the excess will be sent back to us (rebate) and we can add that
to what we are trying to accomplish in our parish. Thank you
in advance from the bottom of my heart. God bless you all!
Update on Capital Campaign: “We Are Living
Stones”
You may recall that the Case Items for Parish Portion are
the following:
• Purchase and Installation of a gas generator
• Repointing of the Church
• Replacement of windows on the school’s 3rd floor
• Repairing the boiler in the school
• Debt reduction
Last year we did the boiler repair at the school building
that cost us $10,075.00. But same boiler needs more repairs.
There will be two different boiler jobs to be done and it will
cost $8,500.00 and $16,000.00. It just never ends! (Speaking
of boiler, we have replaced the boiler (of 1959) for the church
and Maria Room. The cost of that replacement was $38,000.
It is not a case item for this capital campaign, though.) So far,
our parish portion is a $110,000.00. I will ask the Archdiocese to take off what we have spent for school boiler. We
cannot start the 3rd floor window replacement until the
school (Starting Point) starts their own window replacement.
As to repointing of the church, I need to get the estimates.
Then there are other items. Given what we have, I don’t think
we have enough fund. But keep heart and don’t loose hope
because little by little, with your cooperation, we will eventually get there. Thank you for your generosity!

One Day That Lasts 50 Days!
When we think of Easter, we tend to think of it as one day.
Easter is today, Sunday, April 16. But in the Church’s calendar
Easter is not just one day, it is a celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection that lasts 50 days.
In this year of 2017, Easter begins today and does not end until Sunday, June 4, Pentecost Sunday, the Fiftieth Day of Easter.
As the Church tells us, "The fifty days from Easter Sunday to
Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast day, or
better as one "great Sunday." (General Norms for the Liturgical
Year and Calendar #22)
The first 8 days of this 50-day period is known as the Octave
of Easter. Each of those days is as important as Easter Sunday
itself. In fact, we call tomorrow, Monday, April 17, Easter Monday, followed by Easter Tuesday, and so. Next Sunday, April 23 is
the not the Sunday after Easter but rather the Second Sunday of
Easter, followed by the Third Sunday of Easter and so on.
During these Easter days the readings tell us about appearances of the Risen Lord and they also tell us how we too have
been raised to new life because of the Lord’s Passion, Death, and
Resurrection. Through our Baptism we have died and risen with
the Lord.
As Saint Paul tells us in his letter to the Romans, “Brothers
and sisters: Are you unaware that we who were baptized into
Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried
with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was
raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might
live in newness of life. For if we have grown into union with him
through a death like his, we shall also be united with him in the
resurrection.” (Romans 6)
This Easter Season is time for us grow in our understanding
of this most significant event in human history and to consider
what is means s for our understanding of life. Such reflection
takes more than one day, it takes 50 days! In fact, it takes a lifetime!
If the cross is the place where the worst thing that could
happen happened, it is also the place where the best thing that
could happen happened. Ultimate hatred and ultimate love met
on those two crosspieces of wood. Suffering and love were brought
into harmony.
To be “saved” requires a severance from the former life as
clean and sharp as though made by a knife. There must be a wall
of separation between the old life and the new, a radical break.
That means death — death to the old life, in order for the new to
begin.
This wall of separation, this barrier, is the cross.
—Elisabeth Elliot, A Path Through Suffering

group made palm crosses for the residents of St. Ann's Home last

on April 9, 2017. Other Triduum stations included making goodie bags for homeless
shelter and Easter cards for the children at St. Jude’s; sharing the gift of Eucharist
through a ritual on bread & wine; making a cross craft; and reflecting on the Jelly
Bean prayer.
