EINLADUNG ZUM VORTRAG GODS, SOLDIERS, MUMMIES MAKING EGYPT ROMAN DOMINIC RATHBONE ‘Romanisation’ (or not) is a hot topic for the western provinces of the Roman empire, but less discussed for the east. This paper looks at some changes in Egypt in the mid-first century AD. I start with the relation between Roman rulers and Egyptian deities, and the impact of the Roman army on Egyptian society. I then use the archive of family documents kept by Lucius Pompeius Niger, an Egyptian legionary, and some archaeological evidence, including mummies and portraits, for the social and religious practices of the new ‘municipal’ elite who blended Egyptian, hellenic and Roman elements into a new and distinctive provincial culture. Im Anschluss bitten wir zu einem Glas Wein. IKANT – INSTITUT FÜR KULTURGESCHICHTE DER ANTIKE King’s College London
