The Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) is a key network
of community-driven women dedicated to making a difference in
the lives of New Yorkers.
WLC members champion United Way of New York City’s
education work, with a focus on the ReadNYC initiative.
The group’s annual luncheon honors the achievements of
outstanding women leaders whose professional accomplishments
are matched by their commitment to philanthropy and giving
back to their community.
Net proceeds from this signature event support United Way of
New York City’s education initiatives, serving thousands of young
people across the five boroughs each year.

Did you know that 74% of children who can’t read on grade-level
by third grade are more likely to drop out of high school?
In New York City, 8 out of 10 children can’t read on grade-level.
In Mott Haven, the poorest congressional district in the country,
9 in 10 children miss this critical milestone on the path
to future success.
ReadNYC is United Way of New York City’s signature initiative
to improve grade-level reading by third grade in some of the most
challenged communities in our City. We do this by creating
cross-sector partnerships between schools, nonprofits,
government and business leaders.
