Expanded Noun Phrases

Something that has been added to so
that it is now larger.
A collection of words that does not
contain a verb (action word) but
does contain a noun (a person, place,
idea, or thing.)
EXPANDED NOUN PHRASE: A collection of words about a
noun, that uses adjectives to provide more detail and clarity.

Extension Stars
We are lucky in the English language to often have a number of different, interesting nouns
to describe similar things. Some nouns can add extra meaning.

Describing
words
e.g. ‘big’,
‘small’, ‘happy’
As with all of your writing, you don’t want to be using simple, boring adjectives.
They don’t tell the reader anything!
Adjectives such as ‘big’, ‘old’, and ‘nice’ have many alternative words that are
much more imaginative and descriptive.
Look at these examples
“The big mansion.”
“The old cottage.”
“The nice chocolate.”
“The giant, sprawling mansion.”
“The ancient, dilapidated cottage.”
“The delicious, appetizing chocolate.”
