Annual Training Brochure 2016 -17

Introduction
Welcome to the annual training programme for governors, directors/trustees, members and clerks.
Research has proven that the most effective boards constantly review their own effectiveness,
considering any skills gaps, training needs and succession planning and readily make changes to
improve.
The programme provides details of training available to support the work of the board in driving
forward school/academy improvement and the boards own self-development.
All new governors/directors and clerks are encouraged to attend our induction sessions and alongside
any school based induction it will make sure that they are properly inducted into their role and provide
guidance on future appropriate training.
Best practice includes schools improving themselves by working in partnership in a school-led
improvement system and many boards are starting to develop formal and informal mutually
accountable partnerships. Contact us if you’d like us to run training sessions for your group of
schools.
All of our training is facilitated by a growing team of experienced and knowledgeable tutors.
Training is now purchased on a pay-as-you-go basis with the majority of sessions costing £45 per
person attending. Charges are given against each course. Please note we need at least 10 attending
to make a session viable.
We are always open to, and welcome, comments from boards on the content of our provision and as
a service we will continue to be flexible in our ability to respond to new developments.

best practice.
Clerks from all schools (maintained and

outside of their area should it not be convenient
for them.

disadvantaged children is such a major

Partnership Training
If you are currently working with a group of schools, either as a federation, as part of a MAT or less
formally through a CLP (community learning partnership) we can offer any of the topics listed above
as a session for the group. The cost of the session will be shared across the boards within the
partnership.
Alternatively if you are considering joining or forming a group of schools, be it a federation or MAT or
just informally as a partnership, we can assist with a session looking at the shared vision for the group
and the governance structures.
Whatever your requirements please contact Ann Adams to discuss your needs and the cost of the
session at [email protected] or via telephone on 01823 355757 or 07977 410239.
Bespoke Training
9
Many aspects of training are especially effective and successful if they involve the whole board, or all
involved within governance of a MAT, together. Each member will hear the same message and will
work on issues together, and, where appropriate agree shared outcomes.
The majority of the topics offered in our development programme can be delivered as bespoke whole
board sessions at a cost of £340 for a 2 hour session delivered on a date and time convenient to the
board.
Alternatively we can develop a specific bespoke session on any topic tailored to your specific needs,
examples might be:• Preparing for Ofsted – a session tailored around your specific setting to prepare the board for
an expected inspection. Often this session is especially effective when also attended by the
senior leadership team of the school/academy. The board will gain an understanding and
confidence as to what the expectations will be of them when Ofsted visit and the key
information they will specifically need.
• A New Head on an Old Body – when a new Headteacher/Principal joins the school/academy
everything changes. How the board works with the new Headteacher/Principal may also need
to change – what worked before may not work now, or expectations may be different. This
facilitated session will help tease out these issues and it may involve re-visiting the vision and
long term strategic plan in order to make sure that all are headed in the right direction.
• Monitoring the School/Academy Development Plan – This session will use your own settings
development plan to develop the boards monitoring calendar that compliments the school’s
own monitoring programme based on the specific priorities for your school or academy. Your
own development plan will be used giving guidance on what to look for during visits and
questions that will need to be asked.
• Understanding school data – Performance of pupils/students is a key indicator used by the
government in making sure that all children are receiving the best outcomes. Your
school/academy will use a range of performance information and your own data will be used to
help the board to understand how pupil performance is measured for all the pupils including
disadvantaged, vulnerable and more able learners.
Governance Self-evaluation/Review
Whether as a result of an Ofsted inspection, stating a governance review is required, or as part of a
self-evaluation/governance health-check we can assist with either undertaking a governance review
or facilitating a self-review. Please do get in touch, [email protected] 01823 355757 or
07977 410239, to discuss your requirements.
** WHATEVER YOU NEED **
Whatever your particular circumstances, let us know what your issues are and we can discuss how
best we can help. It might be that you would prefer us to provide a short, sharp focused one-hour
session that can be held immediately before a meeting, thereby reducing the number of evening
commitments a governor or director/trustee sometimes has.
