What is SAGE? - University of Maine at Presque Isle

What is SAGE?
Seniors Achieving Greater Education
(SAGE) welcomes intellectually curious adults,
age 50 and older, who have a desire to learn in
the company of people with both shared and
different perspectives. SAGE brings members
together in a relaxed noncompetitive atmosphere
to discover new ideas about the world and themselves. There are no admission requirements, no
examinations and no grades – learning is its own
reward.
Members of SAGE pay a modest fee of $17 per
semester, or $32 annually (Sept. 1 – Aug. 31).
Courses are free for members; some hands-on
courses and/or excursions have additional fees.
Some courses may require the purchase of books.
As a SAGE member, you’ll have free access to
most events sponsored by the UMPI Student
Activities Office. Your name tag will serve as
your ticket.
We offer courses that vary in length from three
to eight weeks, usually meeting for two hours
once a week. The courses are planned and led
on a volunteer basis by our own members and
guests. Course formats range from lectures and
discussions to field trips and hands-on learning.
Course topics include arts, sciences, current
events, foreign affairs, and specialty courses. We
have two sessions per year, one beginning in
September, and the other in mid-March. Special
excursions and events are also planned.
We hope you will join us for this life-long learning adventure!
Join us and celebrate
learning for life!
Your parking decal is FREE with your SAGE
membership. Bring car registration
information to Kick-off.

Dealing with
“Compassion Fatigue”
Tuesdays, April 4, 11, 18, 25; 9:30 – 11:30 am
As we age, so do other family members or
close individuals. In the aging process, frequently someone needs considerable support and care.
Because of the concern we have, we assume
responsibility for their care or support, but after
awhile something called “compassion fatigue”
begins to set in. Sufferers can exhibit symptoms
including a pervasive negative attitude which is
characterized by a gradual lessening of compassion over time. This course focuses on how to
deal with this stress and the detrimental effects
we may experience. Discussions will be held
on Alzheimer’s, chronic brain injury, physical
disability and dementia.
