Keep the pirates in the same groups as Activity 1 and equally distribute the play coins to each group. Explain that each group should try to determine as many ways as they can to make a dollar out of the coins. Encourage them to be systematic in their thinking (i.e. starting with 1 coin type, then 2, then 3, then 4 as in the table below). Have them write down the coin combinations they come up with in their journals. Here are some examples, but there are many more (with 3 and 4 coin types): 1 Coin Type 2 Coin Types 3 Coin Types 4 Coin Types 4 quarters 1 quarter + 75 pennies 1 quarter + 25 pennies + 1 quarter + 25 pennies + 8 10 nickels nickels + 1 dime 10 dimes 1 quarter + 15 nickels 1 quarter + 50 pennies + 1 quarter + 25 pennies + 6 5 nickels nickels + 2 dimes 20 nickels 2 quarters + 50 pennies 1 quarter + 25 pennies + 1 quarter + 25 pennies + 4 5 dimes nickels + 3 dimes 100 pennies 2 quarters + 10 nickels 2 quarters + 25 pennies + 5 nickels 1 quarter + 25 pennies + 2 nickels + 4 dimes 2 quarters + 5 dimes 1 quarter + 5 nickels + 5 1 quarter + 50 pennies + 3 dimes nickels + 1 dime 3 quarters + 25 pennies 1 quarter + 10 pennies + 1 quarter + 50 pennies + 1 13 nickels nickel + 2 dimes 3 quarters + 5 nickels 1 quarter + 20 pennies + 2 quarters + 25 pennies + 11 nickels 3 nickels + 1 dime When the crew has had a chance to come up with a number of coin combinations, have them share their findings with the rest of the crew. How many different combinations can they generate? Pirates can record them is a table, if time allows. © 2015 Zeno, All Rights Reserved - Journals - Play coins
