TITAN TRIBUNE – November 30, 2012 Page 1 of 4 TEA AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT TITAN TRIBUNE FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2012 TEA AREA SCHOOL, POB 488, TEA, SD 57064 – 605-498-2700 VOLUME 4 ISSUE 3 From the Superintendent’s Desk By Mrs. Lowery, Superintendent Celebrating the Arts The Tea Area School District’s mission statement is to educate and empower students for success in a global society. The Arts are one of the most powerful tools we use in our schools to continually work towards our mission. The district has a leadership team comprised of administrators, teachers, and support services staff who serve on three school improvement committees within the greater team. One of these strands is the motivation committee which is comprised of our four school counselors, Mrs. Fylling, and Mr. Fechner. Their action plan includes providing monthly information to the staff and receiving feedback on the suggestions incorporated into their rooms. Last month, the Developmental Asset focused on the importance of the Arts. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the reflections from the staff on the article and suggestions as they both formally and informally incorporate the Arts into their classrooms. The Arts are alive in our classrooms thanks to the dedicated teachers across our district who believe in the importance of developing young people who are empowered to express themselves. Formally, the Arts encompass vocal, band, drama, debate, oral interpretation, and art. Tea Area School District is blessed with incredibly talented young people who are led by dedicated professionals who love kids. If you have not taken the opportunity to experience our students in action, you are missing out as our district is known for its excellence in the Arts. At the risk of missing something, I applaud our award winning high school and middle school marching bands, all-state chorus and orchestra participants, decorated oral interpretation students, talented middle school and high school drama casts, and middle school musical participants. I share the joy and hard work I see at our kindergarten through sixth grade vocal and band concerts. The joy of seeing children learn, prepare, excel, and perform is heartwarming and exciting as it is a skill set we are developing in our youngest children. I am in awe of the beautiful artwork lining the hallways in all four of our buildings. The holiday season is my favorite time of the year because of the beauty, symbolism, talent, and traditions which are engrained in our culture. As I reflected on each of these pieces, I realized they almost all linked back to the Arts. I am sincerely grateful for the excellence of the Arts in our school and appreciate the impact they have made on our culture and my life. Happy Holidays. Mrs. Lowery Author David Jal visits Tea Area Elementary On Monday, November 5, First and Second Graders at Tea Area Elementary School had the privilege to hear author, David Jal, share his book David’s Book and his experiences as a Lost Boy from Sudan. In addition to his story, Jal answered student’s questions and even brought a corn grinder for students to see. David Jal’s visit to Tea Area School District was sponsored by TAPTO. Congratulations to the Tea Soccer Team State High School Soccer Tournament 2012 staff awarded Coach Amber Briden and the Tea Soccer Team with the Team Sportsmanship Award. Congratulations on winning the honor of good Character and Conduct! TEA AREA SCHOOL, P.O.
