January 15, 2017 – Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Isaiah 49:3, 5-6
The prophet practically speaks of himself as another Jeremiah, also selected from his mother’s womb to
preach the word. He will tell of the coming of a light to all the nations.
Second Reading: I Corinthians 1:1-3
Paul cites his authority as a messenger for Christ in this standard opening formula for a letter that was
used in his day. He writes to the Church in Corinth that they realize that they are a people truly called to
holiness.
Gospel: John 1:29-34
The Holy Spirit appears in the form of a dove at Jesus’ baptism to endorse Him as the One designated
by God to bring salvation. He is the unique “Lamb of God” of a new Passover, slain for our offenses, and
thus offering us a whole new life.
Reflection:
Go out and share with someone else about who Jesus is to you. Don’t be afraid to go out and live your
faith publicly. Take a chance and go out and speak boldly, just as John the Baptist did in his day.
So we ask ourselves:
 Who is Jesus for you?
 How has your life been impacted today, some two thousand years after the man Jesus walked the
streets of Palestine?
