Aloha Warrior Parents and CommunityIt’s already March! Soon the third quarter will be a memory and the fourth quarter will be
amongst us. I encourage all students to keep up the great work and not lose momentum as
we enter the last part of the school year.
Just a reminder that summer school will be offered at WHS. We encourage all students
who need credit recovery to enroll early. The catalog and registration forms should be out
in the next coming weeks.

Thank you to our dedicated staff for their hard work during the accreditation process.
Also a big mahalo to our students, parents and community members for their invaluable
input.
The Accreditation team consisted of Dr. Samuel Butscher (retired high school principal
from California), Lynette Fujimori (educational specialist), April Shigemoto (school
assessment liason), Anne Zellinger (academic coach), Garrett Arakawa (CTE/Tech
coordinator), and Kathleen O’ Malley. The team stated that a significant factor is the
feeling of school pride that permeates the entire school community. Everyone believes
that Waiakea High School is a special place and they work hard to maintain and improve
this perception. We won’t be notified of the term of our accreditation until May or June.
BUS PAYMENTS
Students who ride the bus must make
payments at the Main Office for the 4th
quarter to continue to have riding
privileges.. If payment is not made,
students will not be allowed to ride the

Attendance Concerns
Does supplying a doctor’s note for an
absence automatically excuse it? Believe
it or not, it doesn’t. If you aren’t
familiar with what type of absences are
considered excused, please refer to the
attendance policy in the student
handbook given to students at the
beginning of the year, or on the school
website. If you need further information
or clarification, please feel free to

HAWAII STATE CTSO CONVENTION
The 2011 Hawaii State CTSO Convention’s DECA Career Development Conference was
held on February 21-23, 2012 at the Honolulu Convention Center on Oahu. DECA conferences
are targeted, highly-focused learning experiences for business students. DECA conferences bring
student members into the larger DECA community while providing unique opportunities to
extend classroom learning. The Hawaii State DECA Conference connects with corporate
professionals to engage students in learning industry-related trends and content.
Five Waiakea High DECA students competed in various competency-based role playing
and written test events in business services marketing and retail merchandising. Students also
had the opportunity to attend a workshop learning business skills and concepts on Design
Thinking. Rochelle Acasio, Tyler Kojima and Jennifer Taniguchi competed in the Retail
Merchandising role play and written events. Shonn Hironaga and Dane Sako competed in the
Business Services Marketing role play and written events.
Congratulations to Rochelle Acasio who received a role play medallion in Retail
Merchandising and Shonn Hironaga who received a role play medallion, Top 6 Finalist medal,
3rd place written exam medal and 1st place Overall Trophy in the Business Services Marketing
Event. Shonn along with students statewide will have the opportunity to represent Hawaii’s
Delegation at the 66th International DECA Career Development Conference in Salt Lake City
Utah. Great job DECA Warriors!

Attire: Blue cap and gown for boys; White cap and gown for girls
Boys: White, collared dress shirt (short or long-sleeve), solid black dress pants and solid
black dress shoes, no slippers, no Crocs. School dress code applies for attire under
gowns.
Girls: White dress or white shirt/skirt and plain white shoes, no slippers, no Crocs.
Straps must cover back of heel. Front of shoes can be open-toe or fully-covered. Heel
must be flat to two (2) inches in height. School dress code applies for attire under gowns.
Attachments to cap and gown are not allowed.
Tickets: Admission to the Commencement Ceremony is by ticket only. Enter through one of
two general admission gates that will open at 5:00 pm. Gates close at 6:00 pm for the
processional. The gates will again open for all ticket holders following the processional.

PARTICIPATION IN COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES IS A PRIVILEGE, NOT A RIGHT!!
The Board of Education Policy 4540 states: “A high school may revoke a student’s privilege of participating in the
commencement exercises after determining that a chapter 8-19 offense was committed by a student during the
fourth quarter of the school, as follows:
1. Class A or B offense
a. First offense during the fourth quarter: revocation of privilege.
2. Class C or D offense
a. First offense during the fourth quarter: warning that the privilege will be revoked if a second offense
is committed.
b. Second offense during the fourth quarter: revocation of privilege.
Other Requirements for Participation in Commencement Exercises:
1. Completion of graduation requirements.
2. Clearance of all financial obligations. Financial obligations include, but are not necessarily limited to:
a. Student fees/senior class dues
b. Lunch fees to cafeteria
c. Costs of assigned textbooks/classroom materials that are lost or damaged
d. Library books/materials that are lost or damaged
e. Restitution agreements between student/parent and school for vandalism or negligence
3. All graduates must attend the last commencement practice on the morning of Saturday, May 19, 2012
at Edith Kanaka`ole Stadium.

Waiakea’s Library Has Gone Mobile!...and other news Introducing the new Destiny Quest mobile app! Now students can navigate the library—anytime, anywhere—in the palm of their hands. If you have an Android and Apple IOS smartphones and tablet devices, you can download the free app and search for books, view the latest additions and most popular titles and make your own request list. You can also see what library books and textbooks you have borrowed, including those which are overdue. In order to download this new app, please come to the library to set up your private login and password. We are trying to create a cadre of students willing to be the first to use the Destiny Quest app. This year, librarian Mrs. Gloria Kobayashi has been presenting power point lessons on cheating and plagiarism. Students have also been learning how to use online editions of World Book Encyclopedia and the Encyclopedia Britannica, both of which are paid for by the library. Most are also familiar with the database called EBSCO Student Research Center, which provides the latest magazine and newspaper articles and even television news releases on every subject. Also part of the library’s program are four editions of the Waiakea High School alumni project, Na Mea Kupaianaha O Waiakea, which features interviews and photos of Waiakea alumni by the careers they have chosen. A total of 109 photos of alumni are arranged around the library, with a representative from every class until 2005. The interviews of the alumni are available as a link from the school’s webpage. Student artwork is always on display through the library’s purchases of oil, watercolor, pen and ink and spray paintings and photographs. Teachers also display student work in the locked, lighted glass case at the library’s entrance. The library is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 pm Monday through Friday, except for some Wednesdays when there may be staff meetings in the library. CHECK AND CLEAR YOUR OBLIGATIONS! The WHS Library is the central clearing house for all overdue library books, textbooks, class dues, art and computer fees, club ticket sales, sports and military uniforms and any other items owed to the school. Seniors must clear their obligations in order to participate in commencement ceremonies. Also, if students have obligations, they may not be eligible to run for class office, court elections or attend the Junior prom.
