Say it Loud; say it PROUD!
On Monday October 17, the Smyer
Varsity Cheerleaders heldtheir 5th
annual mini cheer camp. At the
camp the girls were split up in
groups K-3 and 4-6. Each group
learned three cheers each and a
dance during the camp and also
played games. At the end of camp
the parents of the mini cheerleaders came and watched the girls
show them everything that they had
learned. Hailey Casias, a senior this
year, has cheered all four years of
high school. Hailey said, “The past
four years of mini cheer camp have
been incredible for me. I love being
able to teach the younger kids how
to cheer, and I’ve enjoyed watching
them grow up and get better and
better every year. It’s nice to know
that there are little ones looking up
to you; wanting to be just like you.”
The girls preformed on Friday October 21, during the Pep Rally. First,
all of the girls preformed a cheer
called “Go Big Blue and White”
together. Next the K-3 grade group
preformed the two cheers they had
learned- “Were Here” and “Spirit.”
Then the 4-6 grade groups pre-
formed the cheers that they had
learned: “Hey- Hey
Bobcats,” and
“Bobcats Louder
Now.” Lastly all of
the girls preformed
their dance that was
called “Swagger Jagger.” Kira Posadas, a
third grader said,
“My favorite part of cheer camp
was learning and preforming the
dance over and over again.”

Elementary participates in mock election
On November 2, 2016, 3rd
through 6th grade participated in
a mock presidential election.
The teachers found out about
the online mock election
through Studies Weekly,

vote/results, the curriculum
they use for social studies. They
spent several days discussing
the process of voting and the
presidential candidates. Out of
the Smyer elementary, Donald
Trump had 90 votes, Hillary
Clinton had 24 votes, Jill Stein
had 8 votes, and Gary Johnson
had 5 votes. Out of all of the
elementaries that participated
in the US, Hillary Clinton had
48.5% of the votes, Donald
Trump had 36.5% of the votes,
and Jill Stein and Gary Johnson
both had 7.4% of the votes.
Chess Club continues to grow
Cari McCullough has been sponsoring the Smyer Chess Club for
8 years. 2nd through 8th grade
can become members of the
Chess Club. Most of the members arrive at school at 7:00 AM
once a week to practice. The
Chess Club can participate in
UIL chess in December and usually goes to at least one tournament in the spring that is host-
ed by the Texas Tech chess
program. On Tuesday, October
25, 2016, the chess club had
Alex Onischuk, the Director of
the Texas Tech Chess Program,
come to give a UIL Chess workshop to the 4th through 8th
graders. He gave them some
history of the game, some
pointers on good strategies,
and went over solving chess
“The
puzzles. Cari McCullough said, “I
love having chess club! It is a
great motivator for the students
that are involved. It gives them
an opportunity to be involved in
something that is
different from the normal school routine, but
still helps their problem
solving skills and selfcontrol.”

Fun was had by all at the Fall Festival
“The fall festival
was a fun
experience for my
friends and family “
Ethan Ramirez
8th Grade
The Fall Festival was on Saturday, October 29th. The whole
Smyer community enjoyed
candy, games, a haunted house
and a special guest that kissed
a pig!
The FFA thought the festival
was extremely successful and it
exceeded all of their expectations. The high school seniors
got together to form a haunted
house for the families and kids
of Smyer. They dressed up and
scared people through all of
the locker rooms. The fall
festival set up a lot of booths
for organizations. The booths
offered games and handed out
candy for the kids.
Before the fall festival the
school asked the kids of Smyer
to put coins in a bucket to see
who would have to kiss the
pig. Many kids put coins in the
bucket but the winner of the kissing
the pig challenge was Mr. Igo. Mr.
Igo was the one with the most
coins in his bucket.
The whole festival was a huge success for the Smyer community and
the FFA. Everyone enjoyed the
games candy and entertainment.
