Mrs. Baird’s Bread and United supermarkets are proud to host this program in 2016-2017 this school year. Throughout this school year, students can log onto www.MrsBTeacher.com and fill out a brief entry on why their teacher(s) deserve special recognition. Smyer participates for October Awareness Month Seniors won the Battle of the Classes with 86% of the senior class wearing blue. Many of the faculty and students of Smyer High School participated in Drug and Breast Cancer Awareness week by showing off there spirit. The week of October 24th was Monday hat day, Tuesday twin day, Wednesday pink day, Thursday battle of the classes, and Friday was costume day. Battle of the classes was a day where each class wore a different color for their class spirit and seniors were blue, juniors were orange, sophomores were red, freshman were white, 8th was black and 7th was green. The winners were the seniors. On Friday, to support Cancer Awareness everyone shined bright in their neon pink shirts at the game, and student council went out to support our Bobcats and raise money by passing a boot around for the American Cancer Foundation. They raised a total of $613.45. Seniors win the Battle of the Classes by wearying blue. PAGE 2 Varsity girls and Jerrod Fowler participated in the District cross country meet in the Yoakum County Golf Course. 8 athletes travel on a cross country journey 7 Ladycat athletes and 1 Bobcat athlete trip over to the Plains golf course on 10/11/12 to run the District cross country meet with 5 other schools: Sundown High, Plains High, Tahoka High, and Seagraves High. The athletes participating in this event from Smyer ISD were: Junior, Jazmine Lee; Jazmine completed the course with the time of 15:14.90, she placed 11th; Sophomore, Elayna Ainsworth; Elayna completed the course with the time of 15:49.82, she placed 12th; Senior, Kelsey Day; Kelsey completed the course with the time of 16:32.25, she placed 16th; Junior, Anastacia Ramirez: Anastacia completed the course with the time of 16:35.13, she placed 18th ;Freshman, Myranda Ramirez; Myranda completed the course with a time of 17:35.12, she placed 26th; Sophomore, Britney Evans; Britney completed the course with the time of 17:35.12, she placed 27th; and Sophomore, Mackenzie Day; Mackenzie completed the course with the time of 18:08.32, she placed 30th . 31 varsity girls ran at this meet. Smyer High School also had a male athlete travel over along with the girls to compete in the same meet. Senior, Jerrod Fowler; Jerrod completed the 3 mile course with a time of 19:27.80, he placed 10th. The top 10 athletes to finish would be taken to regionals as an individual and top 3 teams would also be taken to regionals, none of the Smyer Ladycats placed top 10 but they placed 3rd as a team ; therefore, the Smyer Ladycats along with the Sundown Roughnecks and the Plains Cowgirls made it to regionals by placing as a team; placing 1st was Sundown, 2nd Plains ,and 3rd Smyer. On the other hand Jerrod Fowler from Smyer High School placed 10th as an individual; Jarrod made it to regionals as an individual. On 10/28/16 the 7 seven athletes that represented Smyer at the District meet now represent Smyer once again at the Region- Smyer band marches to a superior rating “It was fun to be a part of a band who could receive a 1. I love them all.” -Alexis DeLeon The Smyer Bobcat Band competed at the UIL Marching Competition at Lowery Field Saturday October 22th. They received a superior rating and overall received a 1, 2, and 1 from the judges. Band director Julie Tefertiller said “I was very excited; the students really came through. We had a difficult show that I felt was very entertaining to watch. The students had to focus every second to make it happen. I was excited for them!” The band met early Saturday morning to practice before the competition at Lowery field. The four drum majorsAryiah Stith, Austin Brown, Ryan Cantu, and Alexis DeLeon- saluted before the performance and directed the band to a successful outcome as they played Jaws, Godzilla, Cruella Deville, and Imperial March. As the band marched off the field, Mrs. Tefertiller gave a speech about how proud and honored she was to be the Smyer band director and how great the performance was. Given a superior rating from the judges, the band received a trophy. Senior Alexis DeLeon said “It was fun to be a part of a band who could receive a 1. I love them all.” The band ate at Furrs in Lubbock and traveled safely back home with grins and giggles. Junior high students participate in Honor Band auditions SHS EXPRESS The Junior High Honor Band Competition was Saturday November 5th in Levelland. The students who participated were Christine Cisneros- flute, Zachary De Leon- clarinet, Anna Garcia- tuba, Will Overstreet- euphonium, Andres Pizano- trumpet, Karime Prieto -flute, and Autumn Stith- saxophone. The students competed against 1A-4A schools. Andres Pizano placed 2nd chair on trumpet, Will Overstreet placed 3rd chair on euphonium, Anna Garcia placed 7th chair on tuba, and Logan Villegas became 1st alternate on Tenor Saxophone. VOLUME 11, ISSUE2 PAGE Say it Loud; say it PROUD! On Monday October 17, the Smyer Varsity Cheerleaders heldtheir 5th annual mini cheer camp. At the camp the girls were split up in groups K-3 and 4-6. Each group learned three cheers each and a dance during the camp and also played games. At the end of camp the parents of the mini cheerleaders came and watched the girls show them everything that they had learned. Hailey Casias, a senior this year, has cheered all four years of high school. Hailey said, “The past four years of mini cheer camp have been incredible for me. I love being able to teach the younger kids how to cheer, and I’ve enjoyed watching them grow up and get better and better every year. It’s nice to know that there are little ones looking up to you; wanting to be just like you.” The girls preformed on Friday October 21, during the Pep Rally. First, all of the girls preformed a cheer called “Go Big Blue and White” together. Next the K-3 grade group preformed the two cheers they had learned- “Were Here” and “Spirit.” Then the 4-6 grade groups pre- formed the cheers that they had learned: “Hey- Hey Bobcats,” and “Bobcats Louder Now.” Lastly all of the girls preformed their dance that was called “Swagger Jagger.” Kira Posadas, a third grader said, “My favorite part of cheer camp was learning and preforming the dance over and over again.” students Elementary participates in mock election On November 2, 2016, 3rd through 6th grade participated in a mock presidential election. The teachers found out about the online mock election through Studies Weekly, https://vote.studiesweekly.com/ vote/results, the curriculum they use for social studies. They spent several days discussing the process of voting and the presidential candidates. Out of the Smyer elementary, Donald Trump had 90 votes, Hillary Clinton had 24 votes, Jill Stein had 8 votes, and Gary Johnson had 5 votes. Out of all of the elementaries that participated in the US, Hillary Clinton had 48.5% of the votes, Donald Trump had 36.5% of the votes, and Jill Stein and Gary Johnson both had 7.4% of the votes. Chess Club continues to grow Cari McCullough has been sponsoring the Smyer Chess Club for 8 years. 2nd through 8th grade can become members of the Chess Club. Most of the members arrive at school at 7:00 AM once a week to practice. The Chess Club can participate in UIL chess in December and usually goes to at least one tournament in the spring that is host- ed by the Texas Tech chess program. On Tuesday, October 25, 2016, the chess club had Alex Onischuk, the Director of the Texas Tech Chess Program, come to give a UIL Chess workshop to the 4th through 8th graders. He gave them some history of the game, some pointers on good strategies, and went over solving chess “The puzzles. Cari McCullough said, “I love having chess club! It is a great motivator for the students that are involved. It gives them an opportunity to be involved in something that is different from the normal school routine, but still helps their problem solving skills and selfcontrol.” enjoyed the experience of voting.” Mrs. Eudy 3 PAGE 4 FFA students show at the Fair Many FFA students participated in both South Plains Fair and West Texas Fair to show off their skills and to prepare for upcoming big shows.. The West Texas Fair took place on September 8th. Katelyn Ramirez had a 2nd place Duroc and a 2nd place Spot. Ethan Ramirez had a 5th place Hamp and a 4th place Meat Pen Rabbits. Kayden Gillit had a 3rd place Spot and a 9th place Meat Pen Rabbits. The South Plains Fair Ag Mechanics Show took place on September 24th. All of the projects were worked on by many Ag students; the projects were not worked on individually. In the Large General Shop category there was a 1st place Folding Metal Rack, 2nd place Shop Table, 3rd place Bottle Storage Cage, and a 4th place Shop Table. In the Small General Shop category there was a 3rd place Plasma Cart. In the Large Livestock category there was a 2nd place Cattle Chute. In the Large Recreational/Home category there was a 3rd place BBQ Pit, 4th place Bed Frame, 5th place Double T Propane Fire Pit, 6th place Wooden Fajita Cooker, and a 7th place LED Double T Stand. In the Small Recreational/ Home Category there was a Black Fajita Cooker, 2nd place Ford Tailgate Bench, 3rd Black Fajita Cooker, Hanging Fire Pit, Large Fajita Cooker and a Outdoor Bench. The barrow show for the South Plains Fair was on September 25th. Katelyn Ramirez had a 1st place Hamp and a 2nd place Duroc. Ethan Ramirez had a 4th place Spot. Kayden Gillit had a 2nd place Spot and Breed Champion Duroc. Ag teacher Mr. Gillit said “All of my students worked very hard and I am very proud of them.” Fun was had by all at the Fall Festival “The fall festival was a fun experience for my friends and family “ Ethan Ramirez 8th Grade The Fall Festival was on Saturday, October 29th. The whole Smyer community enjoyed candy, games, a haunted house and a special guest that kissed a pig! The FFA thought the festival was extremely successful and it exceeded all of their expectations. The high school seniors got together to form a haunted house for the families and kids of Smyer. They dressed up and scared people through all of the locker rooms. The fall festival set up a lot of booths for organizations. The booths offered games and handed out candy for the kids. Before the fall festival the school asked the kids of Smyer to put coins in a bucket to see who would have to kiss the pig. Many kids put coins in the bucket but the winner of the kissing the pig challenge was Mr. Igo. Mr. Igo was the one with the most coins in his bucket. The whole festival was a huge success for the Smyer community and the FFA. Everyone enjoyed the games candy and entertainment. Spanish Students show their skills! Edgar, Jerrod, and Ryan placed 3rd in the Creative Competition. Smyer High School’s Spanish club members participated in the “Language and Culture Day” at Texas Tech on Friday, October 28th. Kassidy Armes, Ryan Cantu, Allison Chandler, SHS EXPRESS Kade Stewart, Cayden Hayes, Jerrod Fowler, Edgar Gonzalez, Joel Gonzalez, Adamary Prieto, Adam Prieto, Randy Juarez, and Dominic Lucero all participated in the “Language and Culture Day”. Kassidy Armes and Allison Chan- dler placed second in the Culture Competition giving them a prize of 50 dollars. Kassidy and Allison chose the theme of Mexican culture. They then proceeded to decorate their own table, they dressed the part as well, using face paint.
