Gender Identification
Please note that the following has been added to BOTH the Rules
Governing the Local Festivals AND the Provincial Rules:
“Competitors shall enter the festival and all festival classes based
upon their gender identification. Sung and spoken selections are not
constrained to gender specificity.”

The definition of a Selection from the Glossary has been added
under SELECTIONS AND PERFORMANCE Rule #13.

The phrase “OR group” has been added to BOTH Rule #16 and
Rule #17.
Music Composition
The rule stating: “The composition MAY NOT have already been
adjudicated at an AMFA Festival” has been removed.
Musical Theatre Props
Please note that competitors will no longer be able to bring Stage
Props to the Local and Provincial Festival, but rather will have to
use the following three (3) stage props provided by the festival:
chair (which may be substituted with a rehearsal block), table, and
coat rack. No other stage props will be permitted. The piano and/or
accompanist cannot be used as a prop.
Provincial Rules
Rule 190 – Clarification regarding requirements if a competitor
wishes to enter BOTH the Provincial and Provincial National Streams.

Rule 320 – Clarification regarding the exception to memorization in
Class 320 – String and Keyboard Sonata – 1 Movement, has
been added.
Audio Recorded Choral
Classes
As of the 2017 Festival year, only MP3s are the acceptable
formats for the submission of recorded choral entries for
BOTH for Provincials and Provincial Nationals.

Classes
The summary “cheat” sheets have re-appeared in the Provincial
Syllabus to provide clarity of what is responsible at the Local,
Provincial and National Levels in Provincial National Classes

Classes – Percussion
Please note that a Percussion Provincial National Class has now
been added for a 3-year trial basis. No other Percussion Classes will
be offered at the Provincial Level at this time.

Performance requirements at the Local Level for the Provincial
National Musical Theatre Class have changed to ensure the
proper repertoire is brought to Provincials.

class. NOTE: This list is not exhaustive, and if a
selection is not listed, please use your best judgement to
classify it.

PROVINCIAL NATIONAL MUSICAL THEATRE SOLO, Any Voice
ALL SELECTIONS MUST BE MEMORIZED
All selections are to be sung from a published score, in any published key (no transposition), of a staged musical and be gender
identification appropriate. Gender identification must be consistent through all selections. Competitors may use: costumes,
one (1) hand prop per selection (a table, chair and coat rack is provided). Spoken passages are allowed only if published in the
script/score provided. The original copy can be the Broadway score, from an Anthology, or purchased online. Proof of purchase
must be shown for all online purchases.
The term “Up-Tempo” is used to describe music with a lively tempo, often comedy, e.g. – “One Hundred Easy Ways” (from
Wonderful Town). The term “Ballad” is used to describe music with a slower tempo, often of a serious or introspective nature,
e.g. – “On My Own” (from Les Misérables).
The following is a definition of the Musical Theatre Standard Repertoire:

Tin Pan Alley era (1920 – 1942) – Composers such as Berlin, Kern, Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers & Hart, and
Weill
x
The Golden Age (1943 – 1964) – Composers such as Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe, Bock &
Harnick, and Sondheim
x
Contemporary Musical Theatre repertoire (1965 – present day) – Composers such as Sondheim, Kander &
Ebb, Schwartz, Finn, and Jason Robert Brown
One selection by Sondheim is recommended. Selections are not to include operetta/light opera (e.g. Romberg, Johann Strauss,
Lehár, Gilbert & Sullivan, and Offenbach). Competitors proceeding to the Provincial Level of competition must perform the
selection(s) on which they were recommended by at the adjudicator at the Local Level. The recommended selections must
include a Ballad and Up-Tempo work.

Time Limit: Maximum of 30 minutes, or as specified in your Local Addendum
In order to be eligible for recommendation to the Provincial Festival:

Time Limit: Maximum of 30 minutes inclusive.
Competitors must perform three (3) selections which MUST have been adjudicated at the Local Level consisting of:
4. One (1) Musical Theatre Ballad
5. One (1) Musical Theatre Up-Tempo
6. One (1) Musical Theatre selection from the Tin Pan Alley era, the Golden Age, or the Contemporary Musical Theatre
repertoire
National Festival (see National Syllabus for all Rules and Regulations)
Time Limit: Maximum of 60 minutes inclusive (including costume changes).
Competitors must perform five (5) selections consisting of:
1. Musical Theatre Ballad as recommended from Provincial Festival
2. Musical Theatre Up-Tempo as recommended from Provincial Festival
3. Selection from the Tin Pan Alley era*
4. Selection from the Golden Age*
5. Selection from Contemporary Musical Theatre repertoire*
*Selection #3, 4, or 5 MUST have been recommended from Provincial Festival.
