K-12 District 20 TAG Poetry Contest 2016-2017 Concrete In celebration of National Poetry Month, a Concrete Poetry Contest will be held for all Academy School District 20 students in the Talented and Gifted Program. Works of concrete poetry are as much pieces of visual art made with words as they are poems. Concrete poems take the shape of their subjects. The concrete poem must include effective use of poetic devices, such as: Hyperbole Cadence Rhyme: internal or end Repetition Simile/Metaphor Imagery Submit one 8.5 X 11 hard copy Concrete Poem and permission slip per student by noon, Monday, March 20, 2017. Hard copy submissions only; submissions will not be accepted electronically or without permission slip stapled behind the poem. Elementary students (K-5th) submit to Nicci Knox at Discovery Canyon Elementary School. Secondary students (6th-12th) submit to Amy White at Eagleview Middle School. Specifics: Topic – You must write a personal and authentic concrete poem that uses poetic devices to communicate your message to your audience. The topic of your poem must incorporate the theme of nature. Title – Must have a title Length – Entire poem must fit on one 8.5 by 11 page Received – By noon, Monday, March 20, 2017 Text Formatting: Font – Arial Font Size for poem – Author’s choice Orientation – Author’s choice Paper – One 8.5 by 11inch white paper with black ink only Student Information: Font – Arial Font Size for student information -- 12 point, bottom left corner Student’s first and last name School name TAG teacher’s name Grade level Permission: We must have a signed parent permission form in order to reproduce winning Concrete Poems. This must be stapled behind the Concrete Poem. Scoring and Awards: Scoring will be done by a team of TAG teachers. At the end of April, TAG teachers will be notified electronically of the winning entries. Decisions of the judges are final.
