A very relaxed Polar Bear
Unforgettable glacier views
Glacier visit by Zodiac boat
kingdom of the polar bear
9 day
This expedition cruise to Svalbard’s remote northern and eastern regions on board the MV Polar Star provides you with the opportunity
to experience at close hand the unique wildlife, awesome landscape and overwhelming silence of the Arctic. Our ship is one of the
most comfortable ice class vessels available for polar expeditions and she can safely explore areas that many others simply cannot
reach. Your final itinerary is dependent on weather and ice conditions, but we aim to explore the remote northern and eastern
regions of Spitsbergen – perhaps circumnavigating the island.
Day 2 Sightseeing tour of Longyearbyen,
board MV Polar Star and sail for the Icefjord
and Barentsburg.
Day 3 Stop off at Ny–Ålesund, before heading
north to Magdalenefjord and Smeerenburgfjord.
Day 4 – 7 Round the top of Spitsbergen, crossing
the 80th parallel before exploring fjords, glaciers
and icebergs. From here your itinerary is based
on local sea and ice conditions at the time, with
regular landings and Zodiac excursions. Explore
remote locations, seek out Arctic wildlife – including
polar bears – and have the chance to learn more
about the heritage of this fascinating region, from
our on board experts. If conditions allow, we may
circumnavigate the island of Spitsbergen, visit
Nordaustlandet, Wahlenburgfjord, Murchisonfjord
and possibly voyage as far as Edgeøya and
Sørkapp (Southern Cape).
Day 8 Return to Icefjord. Farewell dinner
on board.
Day 9 Early morning arrival in Longyearbyen
where you tods.

SPITSBERGEN AND THE BEAR ISLAND
(Bjørnøya)
9 day
Eight days of exploring the entire west coast of Spitsbergen, including Bjørnøya/Bear Island! This is a totally new and exciting cruise,
taking you all the way from the far south, up to the 80th parallel. In the course of an intense week, you will experience Svalbard’s
spectacular nature with beautiful fjords surrounded by jagged peaks and huge glaciers. During the cruise you will also experience
the wildlife and the fierce environment of the Arctic. The birdlife is remarkable, and even the most blasé orni¬thologists will be
completely astonished. Most likely you will spot seals, whales, wal¬ruses and the ‘king’ himself; the polar bear, in their natural
habitat.

DISCOVER ISLAND AND THE TREASURES
OF THE SOUTHERN GREENLAND 15 day
Greenland’s arctic wilderness offers us some of the most spectacular and unspoilt scenery anywhere on earth. The largest island on
the planet, its frozen coastline has witnessed the birth of some of nature’s most breathtaking creations. Here the struggle for survival
has engendered mankind with a healthy respect for his environment and we witness the quite unique interaction of man and nature
as we sail through a landscape rich in culture, history and spectacular wildlife, into the northern lands of the midnight sun.
VOYAGE ITINERARY
Day 1 Reykjavik (Iceland) Reykjavik is the world’s
northernmost capital city and home 171 514 people.
In relative close surroundings of Reykjavik you may
find glaciers, waterfalls, geysers and mountains.
Reykjavik has also a vast selection of restaurants,
museums and shops.
Day 2 Grundarfjördur (Iceland) Is the capital of the
Westfjords (Vestfirðir) region of Iceland, With a
population of about 4,100 Ísafjörður is the largest
town in the Westfjords.
Day 3 Denmark Strait. While crossing the Denmark
Strait we follow in the wake of the great Norse
settlers who left the shores of Iceland and Norway
more than 900 years ago.
Day 4 Prins Christian Sund. Greenland’s southern
shores contain some of the most culturally and
scenically diverse regions of the island. Enjoy
breathtaking scenery as we navigate dramatic Prins
Christian Sund, a narrow, often ice-choked 70-milelong channel across the southernmost point of
Greenland. Huge glaciers tumble down from the
Ice Cap.
Day 5 – 6 South Greenland. We will visit small communities of Southern Greenland. In this area we find
unique Viking history, historic sites, arts and crafts,
and majestic scenery with the multiple colours of
the autumn.
Day 7 Nuuk. The capital of Greenland houses about
15 000 people and holds the political and social
centre of Greenland. Nuuk is the oldest town in
Greenland founded by the Danish-Norwegian missionary Hans Egede in 1728.
Day 8 Qeqertarsuaq. Qeqertarsuaq is situated on
the old volcanic island of Disko, and is the only town
on the island. The population is around 1 100, about
60 whom live in the town’s only settlement, Kangerluk. Qeqertarsuaq means “The Big Island”, and the
most important industry in the town is fishing and
sealing though whaling once used to play an important role. The town is set in wonderful surroundings at the foot of impressive Basalt Mountains.
Day 9 Uummannaq/ Ukkusissat.
Uummannaq. The town of Uummannaq is situated
in scenic surroundings at the foot of the 1 170
meter tall, heart-shaped mountain. The municipal
borough of Uummannaq has a population of about
2 650 of whom 1.400 lives in the town and the rest
in the remaining 7 Settlements in the borough.
Ukkusissat. We will be calling Ukkusissat in the
evening. This settlement is set in wonderful scenery
nestling between the magnificent mountains of the
municipal borough of Uummannaq. There are about
190 inhabitants in the settlement, all of whom make
a living from hunting and fishing.
Day 10 Eqip Sermia. The glacier Eqip Sermia has
a front edge about five km long that calve icebergs
into the open ocean. Today you have an outstanding possibility to experience a glacier and sense the
greatness of the nature. We will use the ship's
tender boats to go ashore in this beautiful area near
by the glacier. Passengers in relatively good physical condition will be able to hike in the area.
Day 11 Ilulissat. Icebergs are called Ilulissat in
Greenlandic, and it comes as no surprise to anyone
who has been here that this is the town’s name. This
is the third largest town in Greenland with a population of about 5000. Ilulissat is set in marvellous
surroundings at Ilulissat Isfjord that in 2004 was
inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Day 12 Sisimiut. Sisimiut has a population of about
5.200 inhabitants and is the second largest town in
Greenland. The main trade is fishing, and the town
accommodates a large fleet of trawlers, a shipyard
and a fish factory. Sisimiut is the southernmost of
the towns on the western coast of Greenland where
sleigh dogs can be found. The MS Fram normally
docks at the quayside in Sisimiut.
Day 13 Itilleq. In the early afternoon we reach the
small settlement Itilleq. Itilleq means “the hollow”
and was founded in 1847 on another island, but was
later moved one kilometer east to its present location. The village is located about 50km south of
Sisimiut in the head of the Itilleq Fjord. Around 130
people live here, who are mainly engaged in hunting and fishing.
Day 14 KangerlussuaqKangerlussuaq is situated in
the end of the Kangerlussuaq fjord. The settlement/
airport lies just north of the Arctic Circle and is one
of the best places to observe native wildlife. In the
early 1960’s musk oxen were introduced to
Kangerlussuaq from North East Greenland, and
today they count over 5 000 Evening flight back to
Copenhagen.
Day 15 Your fight arrives early morning in
Copenhagen.

ICELAND ADVENTURE 12 day
Greenland’s arctic wilderness offers us some of the most spectacular and unspoilt scenery anywhere on earth. The largest island on
the planet, its frozen coastline has witnessed the birth of some of nature’s most breathtaking creations.
VOYAGE ITINERARY
Day 1 Kangerlussuaq. Your flight arrives from
Copenhagen, Danmark. Kangerlussuaq is the
main gateway to Greenland and a settlement in
the Sisimiut community. Slightly less than 600
people live and work in Kangerlussuaq (the long
fjord). The airport was built by the Americans
during World War II and was operative as an
American base until 1992.

from the Ice Cap.
Day 4-5 South Greenland. We will visit small
communities of Southern Greenland. In this area
we find unique Viking history, historic sites, arts
and crafts, and majestic scenery with the multiple
colours of the autumn.
Day 7 - 9 East Greenland. Also here our actual
program and routing will depend on ice and
weather conditions - which vary unpredictably
from season to season and day to day. This is an
expedition into a very little traveled area and no
specific itinerary can be guaranteed in advance.
Skjoldungen Island will provide us with views of
some of the most spectacular landscapes in the
whole of Greenland. At the southern end of the
island we sail by an abandoned Greenlandic settlement, while further into the fjord we plan to
land near the remains of an ancient Thule site.
Køge Bugt, is where the Greenland Ice Cap
reaches the sea, large tabular icebergs drift
around and are an impressive sight. At Umivik we
look for the place, where Nansen went ashore
and started his epic traverse of the Greenland Ice
Cap.
Day 6 Prins Christian Sund. Greenland’s southern
shores contain some of the most culturally and
scenically diverse regions of the island. Enjoy
Ammassalik is the largest community in East

East Greenland’s first trading post in 1893. The
municipality covers an area five times the size of
Denmark, though it only has a population of less
than 5,000.
Day 10 Denmark Strait. We cross the Denmark
Strait and continue to Iceland’s West Fjords, an
area of cascading waterfalls and huge numbers
of nesting birds.
Day 11 Isafjördur. In the morning hours we arrive
at Isafjördur. With a population of about 4,000
Ísafjörður is the largest town in the Westfjords.
Despite its size and small population, and the
historical isolation from the rest of the country,
the town has a rather urban atmosphere. Here
we will find a school of music as well as a hospital
and a cultural centre with a library and showrooms. It has become known in Island as a centre
for alternative music.

11 day
Greenland’s arctic wilderness offers us some of the most spectacular and unspoilt scenery anywhere on earth. The largest island on
the planet, its frozen coastline has witnessed the birth of some of nature’s most breathtaking creations.
VOYAGE ITINERARY
Day 1 Reykjavik embark MS Fram
Day 2 Denmark Strait. Cruising Denmark Strait
we keep a lookout for humpback and Minke
whales. Later we approach the rarely visited coast
of East Greenland, which belongs to the most
isolated, sparsely populated and scenically superb
parts of Greenland.
Day 3 Ammassalik. A ndic halibut,
Days 4-8 North East Greenland. One of the
reasons North East Greenland is so rarely visited
is because of the enormous ice transport along
the coast. The cold water currents out of the
Arctic Ocean is transporting some 2500 to 2800
square kilometers of multi-year ice, leaving only
this late summer period open for navigation
Scoresby Sund is the largest fjord in the world.
Huge icebergs are set to a backdrop of spectacular mountains and tundra. Passing Cape
Brewser entering the fjord will challenge the
observers understanding of scale – everything
here is at the Grand end.
In Ittoqqortoormiit, several hundred Greenlanders live. In this isolated hunting community,
people still depend on hunting polar bears, musk
oxen and seals for their livelihood. The only connection to the world is by air to Iceland and the
occasional visiting ship.
The following days we hope to venture further
north towards North-East Greenland National
Park. This is the largest National Park in the world,
being more than three (3!) times the size of the
British Isles or about one and a half times the size
of France. Number of visitors in this area is
barely above four digits per year. Here we will
have the possibility to visit places such as the
legendary Alpefjord with its magnificent mountains, the Stauning Alps, some of them more than
10000 feet (3000 meters) high. The place names
of North East Greenland witnesses a rich history
of scientific expeditions, trapper over wintering
and nations that wanted to plant their flag and
claim new lands. Examples are: Geographical
Society Island, Kong Oscar Fjord, Teufelschloss,
Waltherhausen Glacier and Myggbukten. This is
also the area where the Thule culture winter
houses are found. As many as 20 people used
these tiny houses, hunting Greenland Whales and
using their vertebrae to build the simple yet efficient structures.
Days 9-10 Denmark Strait. We cross the Denmark
Strait and continue to Iceland’s West Fjords, and
area of cascading waterfalls and huge numbers
of nesting birds. At charming and remote Isafjördur we’ll plan to visit the Maritime Museum and
hope to be treated to a demonstration of traditional dancing.
Day 11 Reykjavik. Reykjavik is the world’s northernmost capital city and home 171 514 people.

its newest having joined in 1949.
Day 9 St. Anthony, Newfoundland. In St. Anthony we will do a tender operation to land.
L’Anse aux Meadows is one and a half hrs away.
L’Anse aux Meadows is the UNESCO World
Heritage Site where Leiv Eriksson first landed in
America. In St. Anthony the Grenfell Museum is situated,
also the home of the famous Dr. Grenfell.
Day 10 Red Bay, Labrador. This charming community on the southern coast of Labrador was
considered the ‘World’s Whaling Capital’ during
the 1560’s. The oil gathered here lit the lamps of
the Renaissance. A significant decline in the
number of bowhead and right whale herds was
caused by over-hunting, which contributed to the
demise and subsequent failure of Basque whaling
in Red Bay towards the end of the 16th century.
Day 11 Bonne Bay, Newfoundland. Bonne Bay is
a bay located on the western side of Newfoundland and separates Great Northern Peninsula
from the rest of the island.
Day 12 and 13 Baddeck, Nova Scotia. We anchor
at the picturesque little village of Baddeck, situated on the shores of the beautiful Bras d'Or Lake
in the heart of Cape Breton lsland, is one of the
world's scenic gems.
Day 14 Halifax, Nova Scotia. Rich in history and
natural beauty, the rugged coastlines of this part
of Nova Scotia present us with the first British
town to be settled in Canada. Today Halifax is a
vibrant mix of the old and the new, with some
spectacular landscapes into the bargain. Here our
exciting voyage ends.

CHILEAN FJORD AND ANTARCTICA
15 day
With its incredibly rich fauna, the Southern Ocean is a drama on a grand scale in which the struggle for survival is constant.
Elephant and fur seals, minke whales, many of the world’s 17 species of penguin, large flocks of sea birds – not forgetting
the wandering albatross – give life to this surrealistic and beautiful landscape. This tour is a fantastic opportunity to take a
close-up look the world’s most fascinating and charming continent. On board our comfortable ship you can hear presentations by experts in Antarctica’s rich history, so that you can get even more out of what you will experience along the way

Day 2 Drake Passage. This is where two oceans
meet. On the way through the straits you can
learn a great deal about Antarctica’s fantastic
animals and history.
Day 3–8
Antarctica. This unending, white
wilderness of a continent is full of fantastic
impressions. There are more penguins, and
penguin species, here than anywhere else on
earth.
Deception Island, South shetlands
The British merchant William Smith rounded Cape
Horn in February 1819 in his brig ”Williams”.
A powerful storm drove the ship southwards
and brought about the discovery of the South
Shetland islands.
16 Antarctica
Cuverville Island
The Errera Channel – the waterway between
Rongé Island and the Arctowsky Peninsula on
the mainland – is narrow and beautiful. It was
discovered by the Belgian professor Léo Errera.
Here lie the islands of Danco and Cuverville, the
latter being home to one of the largest known
colonies of chinstrap penguins. The shallow water
between the islands often causes icebergs to
become stuck here, offering a fantastic spectacle
when it occurs.
Neko Harbour
Andvord Bay stretches far into the Antarctic
Peninsula. From here it is just 50 kilometres
to the Weddell Sea. The bay is surrounded
by the mountains and alpine glaciers of the
peninsula and its wildlife makes it a perfect
arena for beautiful impressions. Neko Harbour is
attractively located in the innermost part of the
bay and takes its name from a whaler which was
anchored here in the early 1900s.
Antarctica
©xx
Paradise Harbour
This place got its descriptive name from the
whalers of history. When the storms were at their
worst, this is where they came to seek shelter.
On the northern tip, right across from Lemaire
Island, lies the well known Waterboat Point.
This was known as a base for daring expeditions
in former times and is today the base for the
Chilean research station Gonzàlez Videla.
Lemairekanalen
Lemaire Channel was discovered by the German
whaler Eduard Dallman in 1873 and later mapped
and researched in 1898 by Adrien de Gerlache,
who named it after his Belgian colleague Charles
Lemaire. This 11 kilometre channel is a fantastic
sight and is known as one of the most beautiful
passages in Antarctica. If there is no wind, the
clear water can reflect the steep mountains in a
spectacular way.
Petermann Island
The same whaler, Eduard Dallman, also
discovered this island and named it after the
geographer August Petermann. The island is
perhaps better known as an Argentinian hiding
place from around 1950. It has been visited and
maintained by the members of the Ukrainian
base Vernadskiy close by and has been used in
connection with expeditions in the area.
Port Lockroy
Port Lockroy was a British station from the 2nd
world war which was turned into the museum of
the Antarctic Heritage Trust (ATH) in 1996 and is
one of the most visited attractions in Antarctica.
As well as the museum, there is also a post office
and a little souvenir shop. All the profits go to
ATH, which works on the conservation of historic
buildings in Antarctica.
Wilhelmina Bay
The mountains and high glacier walls of the
Antarctic Peninsula around Wilhelmina Bay
convey a mighty impression of ice and water.
Everything from calving glacier fronts to floating
ice, the magnificent contrasts of the interplay
of the elements. This is where Shackleton came
when he took his expedition across the ice on
the Weddell Sea, in the hope of finding whalers
who could come to their aid.
Untouched Antarctic nature ahead
Day 9 Drake Passage. With our bow pointed
north and unforgettable images and experiences
in our souls, we are invited to a new understanding
of the Antarctic and Chile.
Day 10-14 Tierra del Fuego. The mighty nature of
the area around South America’s southernmost
point is rich in history and impressions. We will
use the following 4 days to explore this rarely
visited region.
The magnificent Chilean fjords are practically
unknown to all but a few expedition vessels.
You will have the chance to see several majestic
glaciers during the cruise. Whilst we sail through
the Beagle Channel you can see traces of the
glaciers’ inexorable journey from rugged valleys
to the sea – huge pieces of ice which mark the
glacial route.
Diego Ramirez
The Diego Ramírez Islands are a small group of
islands located in the southernmost extreme of
Chile. Their land area is little more than 1 km². They
were first sighted on 12 February 1619 by Marco
Ramirez, and named after the cosmographer of
the expedition, Diego Ramírez.
Antarctic Sound
The Antarctic Sound lies between the tip of the
Antarctic Peninsula and the Dúrville, Joinville
and Dundee islands. Large flat icebergs from
the calving glaciers in the Weddell Sea are
driven here by powerful tidal currents. The area
is known as Iceberg Alley among expedition
people and offers a staggering assortment of
floating ice of all sizes.
Cape Horn
This is the southernmost point of Chile and South
America and lies almost 56 degrees south. The
region is of great significance on account of its
location, history, discoveries and trade routes.
If the weather permits, we will anchor off Cape
Horn, where you will be able to leave the ship
to explore this deserted and yet romantic piece
of land
Brown Bluff
On the coast of Antarctic Sound, on the western
side of the Tabarin Peninsula, lies this volcanic
elevation with its descriptive name. Here adelie
penguins, chinstrap penguins, kelp gulls and
cape petrel nest below the spectacular cliff,
which rises 745 metres towards the sky. The
stone beach is very suitable for landing outside
the nesting seasons.
Puerto Williams
Puerto Williams is one of the world’s southernmost
towns and lies on the little island of Navarino.
region which is so wild and remote that it seems
almost undisturbed. In these Chilean fjords, the
ice has scoured its way between the mountains,
leaving isolated islands and hidden bays.
The Beagle Channel is about 240 km long and
about 5 km wide at its narrowest point. To the
west the Darwin Sound connects it to the Pacific
Ocean. The biggest settlement on the channel is
Ushuaia in Argentina followed by Puerto Williams
in Chile, two of the southernmost settlements of
the world.
Magellan Strait
Before continuing through the fabled waters of
Patagonia, you will sail in one of the world’s most
remote, undisturbed and beautiful places.
The Magellan Strait lies right in the south of the
continent of South America. The area comprises
the strait itself, all the channels and fjords around
the Brunswick peninsula.
Magdalena Island
One of Chile's largest and most important
Magellanic penguin breeding sites is situated
on Magdalena Island in the Straits of Magellan.
The island has been designated a national nature
reserve because of its importance as a penguin
breeding site.
Punta Arenas
The capital of the Magellan region was the centre
for trade, seafaring and culture. History is still
being made here. Punta Arenas is the capital of
the Magellan region. With 130,136 inhabitants, it
is the largest town in the whole region.
Day 15 Ushuaia/Buenos Aires. After a spectacular
voyage with endless impressions, we make
landfall at the world’s southernmost town.
Beagle Channel
It was named after the ship which carried Charles
Darwin on his voyage of discovery – HMS Beagle.
Near the southern tip of Chile the southern Andes
mountains plunge into the icy water and leave a

Half Moon Island, South Shetland Islands
A small 2 km (1.2 mi) long island in the shadow
of picturesque Livingston Island, Half Moon is
a jewel of diversity in the polar landscape. The
serrated and crevassed cliffs are home to a large
colony of chinstrap penguins as well as Antarctic
terns, kelp gulls, snowy sheathbills, Wilson’s
storm petrels, and several species of seals are
regular visitors.
Marguerite Bay
The first wife of French explorer Jean-Baptiste
Charcot objected to his wanderings and divorced
him citing abandonment. Charcot’s second
wife Marguerite supported his expeditions and
encouraged his travels. In return, he did her
the honour of naming this most beautiful of
bays after her. Rarely visited even by Antarctic
standards, Marguerite Bay is dotted with icecovered islands and surrounded by pristine
mountainous scenery.
Deception Island, South Shetland Islands
When British merchant William Smith was
