this fascinating artistic, aesthetic and horticultural pursuit.
Guest Speaker: Roger Hnatiuk
Roger has been working with Australian species as bonsai
since 1976, and still has one of his first plants from then (Ficus
virens). He was instrumental in establishing the National
Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia at the National
Arboretum. In 2002 he started the Australian Plants as Bonsai
Study Group, under ANPSA.

Meeting Talk 2: ANPSA Garden Design Study
Group
Propagation Group
plants for sale at meeting
Ben will talk about the Study Group and its aims with lots of
pictures of gardens that use native plants.
There will be plants for sale at the
April meeting from ANPS’ shade
houses. These plants were grown
by our Propagation Group
members and are ready to be
planted now. Remember that
autumn is the best time to plant
most native plants in
Canberra. All sale proceeds will
go to the Society.
Nola McKeon, Propagation Group
Guest Speaker: Ben Walcott
Ben and Ros Walcott have been gardening for more than 40
years. Over 30 years ago, they developed a garden in the
sand on the shore of Long Island in New York using azaleas,
rhododendrons, hydrangeas etc. Over 10 years ago, they
moved to Canberra and created their large native garden in
Red Hill. Passionate about encouraging people to use native
plants in their gardens, they have opened their garden to the
public on many occasions. Ben is the Leader of the Study
Group and Ros is the all-important Newsletter Editor.

ANPS Autumn Plant Sale
Saturday 19 March
‘Although the Friday before the plant sale was
wet and windy, lots of volunteers turned up to
put the plants out and setup all the tents and
tables for the big sale on Saturday.
Over 9,000 plants were available, in small and
medium pots. The Saturday was a beautiful day
and there was a good turnout of eager buyers.
In the end, over 7,500 plants were sold leaving
at least some interesting plants for the
latecomers to the sale.
Of the 7,500 plants sold, over 1,200 were
produced by our own propagation group and
6,300 were provided by 8 member growers.
We also sold 83 copies of our book ‘‘Australian
Plants for Canberra region gardens and other
cool climate areas’.
