Brave New World Notes January 30, 2014 CHAPTER 16 Mustapha Mond’s office o Bernard is terrified o Mustapha Mond reveals to John that he has read Shakespeare o John questions Mustapha Mond about why the people are not allowed to read literature they believe in happiness and stability Cyprus experiment (an experiment in rebottling) o began in AF 473 o Controllers cleared all of its existing inhabitants of the island of Cyprus o re-colonized with a specially prepared batch of 22,000 Alphas given all agricultural and industrial equipment and left to manage their own affairs land wasn’t properly worked strikes in the factories laws broken and orders disobeyed o within 6 years, they were having a civil war o when 19,000 out of the 22,000 had been killed, the survivors unanimously petitioned the World Controllers to resume the government of the island “It isn’t only art that’s incompatible with happiness; it’s also science. Science is dangerous; we have to keep it most carefully chained and muzzled” (225). Helmholtz and Bernard are being sent away because of their independent thinking o Bernard has a nervous breakdown o Helmholtz is excited to live with other people who think the same way he does Mustapha Mond chose to be a World Controller o “One can’t have something for nothing. Happiness has got to be paid for” (228).
