CHAPTER 16
 Mustapha Mond’s office
o Bernard is terrified
o Mustapha Mond reveals to John that he has read Shakespeare
o John questions Mustapha Mond about why the people are not allowed to
read literature
 they believe in happiness and stability
 Cyprus experiment (an experiment in rebottling)
o began in AF 473
o Controllers cleared all of its existing inhabitants of the island of Cyprus
o re-colonized with a specially prepared batch of 22,000 Alphas
 given all agricultural and industrial equipment and left to manage
their own affairs
 land wasn’t properly worked
 strikes in the factories
 laws broken and orders disobeyed
o within 6 years, they were having a civil war
o when 19,000 out of the 22,000 had been killed, the survivors unanimously
petitioned the World Controllers to resume the government of the island
 “It isn’t only art that’s incompatible with happiness; it’s also science. Science is
dangerous; we have to keep it most carefully chained and muzzled” (225).
 Helmholtz and Bernard are being sent away because of their independent
thinking
o Bernard has a nervous breakdown
o Helmholtz is excited to live with other people who think the same way he
does
 Mustapha Mond chose to be a World Controller
o “One can’t have something for nothing. Happiness has got to be paid for”
(228).
