Director’s Note “Old situations, new complications, Nothing portentous or polite; Tragedy tomorrow, Comedy tonight! — Stephen Sondheim John Bishop’s The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 is many things: a murder mystery, an affectionate spoof/homage to spooky-‐old-‐house stories, a backstage yarn filled with colorful theatrical types, an ensemble piece designed around a group of character actors and, most importantly, a play with nothing on its mind but the desire to make you laugh. Today the full-‐blown comedy genre is more at home in film and television. But, in the ‘30s and ‘40s, Broadway seasons were filled with “light fare” featuring deft and sophisticated comedic performances from the likes of the Lunts, Gertrude Lawrence and Ina Claire. Audiences were also convulsed by shows built around the more proletarian talents of Bert Lahr and Jimmy Durante as well as the impossible-‐to-‐categorize Beatrice Lillie. In Hollywood, onetime stage performers like Irene Dunne and Cary Grant defined the new category of screwball comedy, while Broadway veteran Bob Hope developed a uniquely relaxed style of wisecracking parody exploits. Bishop’s script accomplishes the monumental task of blending all these disparate styles into a swift-‐moving and cohesive whole that never feels ungainly. Taking my cue from him, I found inspiration in other classic conventions. Many of you will recognize the influence of Buster Keaton in the farcical physical moments, while the sparing use of background music reminds us that small orchestras accompanied even straight plays on Broadway during the play’s time frame. Casting a show like this can be problematic with an acting population raised on realism and sub-‐text. Today’s performers are often unfamiliar with the style, the playing speed and the sheer size of characterization demanded by the script. I was incredibly blessed to find a fearless 10-‐member company, each with their own comic sensibility and terrific timing. What they didn’t know about the specific period, they were more than happy to learn, and the results are a laugh-‐fest you won’t soon forget. Certainly the most daunting prospect in a play with secret passages, multiple deaths, numerous fights, musical numbers, characters in disguise, a vast array of props and the ghost of a German spy watching over the proceedings is how to fit it all onto the Theatre West stage. In the early days I felt more like a general plotting a battle plan than an artist working a script. But I was well aware that comic anarchy would only truly play on stage when it is planned down to the last minute detail. Once the patterns were devised and the technical minutiae ironed out (thanks to an excellent production and tech staff), I was able to concentrate on my performers and urge them on to the unbridled comic madness you will witness in The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940. The human race has only one really effective weapon, and that is laughter. — Mark Twain CAST MEMBERS JACQUE LYNN COLTON (Elsa Von Grossenknueten) Ms. Colton, a longtime Theatre West member, played Countess Flora de Lage in The Women, directed/acted in Bleacher Babes and appeared in Storybook Theatre, Panama Hattie, In the Summer House and Harvey. Ivy's numerous stage credits in New York and Los Angeles include Piaf, Annulla and Zorba (for years, Ivy would only do one-‐word shows with no exclamation points).
