The theme of this year’s mission is “From Woundedness to Healing”. It is very appropriate at this time of difficulty and strife in our world that we connect with our God and call on his Holy Spirit to minister to us and to our families and community. Our previous Mission was held in 2010 and was facilitated by the Monks of Myross. People probably remember it well as we were hit by a period of snow which meant that those attending the talks had to make an extra effort to brave the elements. In 2012 we celebrated the 50th International Eucharistic Congress which was a great success and many parishioners were actively involved in the Congress both at the RDS and in our parish. We now feel that it is a good time to have another parish mission. This year we have decided to invite individual guest speakers coming from different walks of life and various geographical locations, which will make for an interesting programme. The first time I did adoration was in the crying chapel. The heating was on. The chairs were so comfortable. I kept my eyes on the sacred host. Then I heard someone snoring! Yes! Snoring! I looked around at the others who were present. Did I catch a glimpse of a smile in my direction? I looked at my watch and realised that the hour I had promised to spend with the Lord was nearly over. It had passed so quickly! It was then I realised that the snoring had come from myself. Shalom Room in the Parish Centre As far as I can make out the only time the Lord asked the apostles for anything was on the night he agonised in the Garden of Gethsemane. They didn’t do very well. They fell fast asleep. And Jesus gave us that immortal saying “Could you not watch one hour with me?” In 1674 Jesus appeared to, Saint Marguerite Marie Alacoque (1647-1690), while she was praying. This was not the first time that Christ had manifested himself, showing her His Heart. On this occasion Jesus asked her to make a “Holy Hour” of reparation each Thursday evening from eleven to midnight. In this hour she came to share with him the sadness which he experienced in Gethsemane. This practice became widespread among Catholics. During Eucharistic Adoration in the little Shalom room in the Parish Centre, we “watch and wait”. We remain silent in His presence and open ourselves to Him, to His graces, to His help. In this little room God and Portmarnock parishioners reach out to each other at the same time. Here in Portmarnock many parishioners spend an hour with the Lord; just to be in His presence. Some spend the time in prayer or reading or just simply being with Jesus. We are blessed to have a room set aside for the purpose of adoration. The room is called “Shalom” meaning peace. Have you been there? Do you know where it is? It is certainly not like the Garden of Gethsemane. It is a quiet oasis here in our parish. A place where we can rest, be at peace, forgetting the outside world and its problems. It is a room where we can place our worries before the Lord knowing that he is there… listening. Bishop Fulton Sheen tells us that “the purpose of the Holy Hour is to encourage deep personal encounter with Christ. The holy and glorious God is constantly inviting us to come to Him, to ask for such things as we need and to experience what a blessing it is in fellowship with Him.” Jesus waits for us in the Shalom room. He waits for our prayers, our acts of love and adoration, our acts of sorrow and repentance. All the things we can offer Him. Here is a phrase that Fr. Mattie never tires of repeating: “Come to Me all you who labour and are heavy burdened and I will refresh you”. How true this is. If we feel depressed, fed up, frustrated, guilty, laden down with cares and troubles, that phrase is the answer that everyone is looking for. I read somewhere that “The more time we spend with Jesus the more we will come away feeling renewed and healed. Miracles of conversion, peace, discovery of vocations, answers to prayers, physical healings, and many other wonderful things happen where Jesus is adored in the Blessed Sacrament. They are the “gifts” that point to the almighty Giver and testify to His real Presence in the Blessed Sacrament.” In “Shalom” we can speak with Him about everything. We can offer Him our petitions, our concerns, our troubles, our joys, our gratitude, our disappointments, our needs and our aspirations. Why not give it a try? When asked, "What would save the world?"... Mother Teresa replied: "My answer is prayer. What we need is for every parish to come before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in holy hours of prayer." I recently had the pleasure of meeting Oisín Fagan for a chat and I found him to be most affable, an articulate man, who has a passion for his sport boxing but also for life itself. Needless to say we spoke mostly about boxing, Oisín’s career and his current job. I was delighted with the opportunity to meet with Oisín, as I have a deep interest in boxing and like all boxing fans in Ireland followed and supported Oisín in his career. One In the words of George Foreman former World Heavy Weight Champion Oisín was described as ‘O Tough Cookie’ in the ring. That is certainly the case as his record shows, his style is aggressive and very much on the front foot; he has a reputation for leaving his all in the ring and acting in a Gael Force”. professional and dignified manner. Hence his boxing nickname “G Outside of the ring he is a perfect gentleman, a very nice man, focused on the important things in life, his faith and belief in God are an integral part of his life, and indeed for any young children interested in boxing Oisín is an ideal role model to follow. Oisín is a former student of Portmarnock Community School. He graduated with a degree in Physical Oisín with his Irish title Education and Political Journalism from Oklahoma University in America, where he had the opportunity to teach his specialised subject. He is currently working as a Boxing Development Officer with the Irish Amateur Boxing Association in partnership with Dublin City Council. His job is community based with the goals of promoting boxing and community activity, promoting the values of sport and to develop partnerships with local groups and schools. Oisín is based in the Ballymun/Finglas areas and in his own words loves his work as it is very close to his heart. During his long career he trained with Robbie Redmond and Eugene Prunty who have given so much time and commitment to the children at Portmarnock Boxing Club. Oisín made his professional debut as a thirty year old on February 2004. He won the North American State title on 10th December 2004. His Irish title came on 3rd June 2006 beating Jeff Thomas in the seventh round. He was involved in the fight of the year in 2009 with Eddie Highland here in Dublin. Oisín has many moments to be proud of in his boxing career thus far but the two fights that stand out for me are in 2004 when he fought Julio Cesar Chavez Junior in the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino Las Vegas and in 2007 when he fought Paul Spadafora in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. In both fights Oisín fought with desire and determination and lost on the two occasions to split decisions. Commentators have varied opinions on both decisions but in particular people felt that Oisín won the Chavez fight, which would have been massive for him at the time. Unfortunately Oisín was not the promoted fighter, which undoubtedly went against him. During the course of the conversation we spoke about other Irish boxers, in particular his good friend Andy Lee (pictured left with Oisín). Hopefully Andy will be crowned World Champion in the future. Oisín has represented his country with pride and dignity and I can say with certainty that he is very much liked here in his Parish and we are very proud of his achievements. He has no immediate plans to retire from professional boxing and I wish Oisín every blessing for his future plans inside and outside of the ring. A LITTLE BIT OF NEWS Mullingar is famous for the great Joe Dolan, RIP and perhaps more recently Niall Horan of One Direction. However on Sunday September 7th Cardinal Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York attended celebrations in Mullingar to mark the 75th Anniversary of the opening of the Cathedral of Christ the King. It was a special occasion for the people of Mullingar and of my own Diocese of Meath, as they honoured the role the Cathedral has played in the town and Diocese over the last 75 years. The celebrations focused in particular on how the Cathedral has contributed to the faith of the people through the many Priests and people of the community, who down through the years have given so generously of their time and commitment. As they move forward as a community of faith I wish them every blessing for the many years ahead. progress 5 301145 Portmarnock Oct 14 19/09/2014 13:21 Page 6 A MESSAGE FROM THE PPC Please, please, please can we ask all users of the car park to refrain from exiting the wrong way. Already we have had some very near misses. Children, especially, are in grave danger of emerging from behind cars parked there. Please value their young lives. The yellow lines at the exit have the same value as the yellow lines in our road networks. You do not park on double yellow lines. FINGAL MATTERS Special educational Needs. There is a new initiative that will provide information sessions to parents and guardians of children with special educational needs. Information on what educational services and supports are available locally and how to access them will be organised by local Special Educational Needs Organisers (SENOs). The first sessions will take place from this October and November 2014 and are aimed at parents whose children will start school in September 2015. As a country we currently spend €1.3bn on special needs, an amount which has almost doubled in the last 4 years. Parents who would like to take part in one of the information sessions should contact their Local Special Needs Organiser to book a place and to find out about local dates and venues. The local Special Needs Organiser for Portmarnock and Kinsealy is Mark Leddy. Mark is a former pupil of Portmarnock Community school and a Malahide native. He can be contacted at [email protected] I know Mark is extremely busy so bear with him if it takes a while to respond. Beach Toilets. The Toilets at Portmarnock Beach suffered from flooding during the summer, leading to an overflow on the steps. This was one of the reasons a warning about water quality was issued. The Council has given a written commitment that works to prevent this overflow will be included in a refurbishment scheduled for this year. Electoral register Deadline. At the time of every election people are excluded without apparent reason from the electoral register. Now is the time to make sure you are registered. The Electoral register is updated annually between June and October and the Draft Register is published on November 1st. Updating is done by field workers who call to individual houses and apartments to speak to the people who live there. If nobody is home a form is left to fill out. The fieldwork is checked to ensure that the amendment was made to the correct individual, at the correct address and that the appropriate amendment was made. There are various situations where people have been removed including where a non - resident landlord is removed when tenants register, or where family members removing another family member in the circumstances where that person has moved out. In ideal circumstances people would vote where they are living, however I know many people who move frequently find it much more convenient to retain their family home as their primary address. So make sure that you know who in your household wishes to retain home as their primary address, that forms are filled out accordingly and that you check the draft Register in November. The Local Government Reform Act 2014 is an attempt by the Government to increase participation by ‘communities’ in local government. A steering group presented a report which is available online at the website http://www.environ.ie/en/Publications/LocalGovernment/ Administration/FileDownLoad,38547,en.pdf Some relevant excerpts are quoted below. The success will depend of the willingness of people to participate. It is envisaged that while there are about 5 representatives, however, these will be informed by liaison groups where you can make your views known. There should be a meeting in this area soon to inform people about these changes. They will only be effective if you participate. You can influence the decision making process, rather than relying on Councillors who may have to toe a party line. CONTEXT. The Final Report of the Alignment Steering Group was approved by Government as a part of ‘Putting People First’ Action Programme for Effective Local Government , on 16th October 2012. ‘Putting People First’ sets out reforms to improve the delivery of services for the citizen, deliver greater efficiency and effectiveness and give local government a more central role in local and community development. It represents a significant change in government policy in relation to local government and seeks to place local government as the main vehicle of governance and public service at local level –leading economic, social and community development, delivering efficient and good value services, and representing citizens and local communities effectively and accountably. The Local Government Reform Act 2014 enacted on 27 January 2014 gives legislative effect to the commitments in ‘Putting People First’ , including the establishment of Local Community Development Committees (LCDCs) in each local authority administrative area. Small ads 50c per word 6.3 Representation of Private Sector Interests 6.3.1 Community and voluntary interests The final report of the Working Group on Citizen Engagement with Local Government was published in February 2014. A key recommendation of the Working Group is the establishment of a Public Participation Network (PPN) in each local authority area to serve as the nominating structure for community and voluntary interests to local authority committee structures. When established, community representatives will be drawn from each PPN on a three ‘college’ basis, with the colleges representing community and voluntary interests, social inclusion interests, and environmental interests. Accordingly, community representatives should be sought from the PPN as follows: • community and voluntary interest – minimum two members, • social inclusion interests – minimum two members, • environmental interests - minimum one member The final lone environmental representative is at the moment me…...Máire O’Brien. The PCA has continued the Beach Clean over the summer, thank you to all who participated in enhancing our environment. We will join in An Taisce’s big clean up on the 20th of September when we will also participate in the Coastwatch survey of the Irish coastline. We live in a spectacular area and many of you help to keep it that way. The PCA committee always needs new recruits and would be delighted to welcome any at our monthly meetings. Can you cry under water? Why do you recite at a play but you play at a recital? Isn't it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they do "practice"? Why isn't the word 'phonetic' spelled the way it sounds? KEEP WATCH! Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny. 10 Re-upholstery Service New sofas and chairs, headboards Curtains and blinds Designer wallpapers Free callouts, free quotations Tel: 846 0869 Established 30 years Support Local Business TREAT SHOP (Beside Portmarnock Post Office) 085 742 6121 Enjoy Fresh Bean Coffee, Teas, healthy freshly made Juices, Smoothies, Milkshakes, *Breakfast Porridge*Soups *Sandwiches*Pastries*Cakes.
