What a lovely summer! We are so
pleased to see so many people out
enjoying all the new offerings on
Silver Spring Drive, with summer
hours, outdoor seating and so many
reasons to frequent the Shops of
Whitefish Bay. The Whitefish Bay
Farmers Market continues through
the first weekend in October. With
fresh produce, flowers and more –
stop by Saturday mornings from
8am to noon. This year marks the
fifth year of the market, and we
have an expanded season and new
vendors alongside your favorites
from previous years.
The open air market runs Saturday
mornings through October 4 on
Berkeley Boulevard right off Silver
Spring Drive in the heart of our
downtown shopping district in the
Village of Whitefish Bay. Throughout the season, the market will
feature fresh and organic produce,

meats, eggs, honey, flowers, kid’s
activities, and much more. The
Whitefish Bay Farmers Market is a
traditional farmers market with a
green, local and educational focus.
In addition, the farmers market
includes entertainment and educational activities for all ages. Programming includes a story time at
9:15 and live music most weekends
at 10am. We’re enthused for the
start of this year’s farmers market
here in Whitefish Bay. Based on the
success and popularity of last year
and the increased interest in local
and healthy options, we are pleased
to offer a fifth year of the successful
farmers market to the greater community. Market sponsors include

RESIDENT FEATURE
The Tase Family:
Living the American Dream
Left to right: Marko, Aldo, Athina and Peter Tase
IN JUNE 1995, Marko Tase received a
visitor visa and left behind his career
and family to come to the United States
with one hope: bring his family to
this blessed land. This was four years
after the collapse of communism in
Albania, so it was a rare case to even
come to America. Marko’s cousin from
Fox Point (first Albanian generation
born in America) assisted Marko and
welcomed him into her home. From
the first day of Marko’s arrival, he and
his cousin started to project the future
of his family. “For an entire year, I met
new people and gained new hope.”
Everyday Marko was inspired by all the
contacts from this community, which
gave him more strength to accomplish
his dream. Never had Marko heard
such encouraging expressions before,
such as, “Keep going, don’t give up,
keep trying, you will make it, keep
faith in God, be happy. This was the
real America, the real people, the real
life which I wanted for my family. And
this is why I chose this community.”
With all the support and friends Marko
had gained, his year in America flew
by and he headed back to his family in
Albania, spiritually prepared to keep
faith in God. “Four years later I won
the lottery - a diversity visa gave us a
chance to live and work in the U.S. as
permanent residents. In 2000, my wife,
Athina, and boys, Peter and Aldo,
started a new life in WFB. We are now

living our American dream together.”
Before September 2000, when he and his
family immigrated to the U.S., Marko
was, for more than 33 years, a teacher of
foreign languages, English, Italian and
Albanian Literature in Berat, Albania’s
largest high school. Marko has a
Bachelor’s degree of Arts and Letters
from the University of Tirana, Albania.
He is also the author of a book entitled
Albania and Albanians According
to Distinguished Foreign Travelers,
which focuses on the memoirs and
travel diaries written by historians,
diplomats, generals, and heads of state
who have visited Albania, from the
ancient times until 1994. This includes
the former UN Secretary General Javier
Pérez de Cuéllar who visited Albania
in May 1990 and is still today the first
and only UN Secretary General to visit.
This volume was written by Marko to
support his hopes for a Doctoral degree
in Albania. It was published in 2007 in
a United States-based publishing house.
In his years in the U.S. Marko worked
more than four years for the Service
Department of Northwestern Mutual
Life Inc. in downtown Milwaukee.
After that experience, he worked as
a Building Engineer for Tenor High
D
E
School in Milwaukee. Presently, he is
running his own business: L&M Estate
Services.
Athina is known in her hometown of
Berat, Albania as Dr. Ludi. She graduated
from the University of Tirana, School of
Medicine with a degree as a Medical
Doctor. Just weeks before leaving for
the U.S., she successfully completed
a graduate program in the Public
Health Administration, organized
in partnership by the University of
Montreal and the University of Tirana.
For more than 20 years, Athina practiced
internal medicine, specializing in
pulmonary disease. In the years prior
to moving to the U.S., Athina served as
the Health Commissioner for the city of
Berat.
It was during this time that Athina
made the decision to move to the U.S.
To her, abandoning her professional
career as well as her political ambitions
in Albania was a sacrifice well worth
beginning a new life in America for her
sons Peter and Aldo (17 and 12 at the
time). Athina shares, “The America that
many people like us sacrifice everything
for, was built by ambition, vision and
tremendous work ethic. It wasn’t just
our focus, work ethic and optimism that
N

got us to where we are however. Part of
our success should be credited to the
neighborhood, education system, and
great family friends and mentors such
as Ed and Marge Yochum and Charles
and Judy Mulcahy.” Athina also credits
the group members that surround her
at the Milwaukee Country Club, where
she has been extremely happy working
for over ten years.
When Peter came to the States, he only
attended Whitefish Bay High School for
his senior year. The graduation ceremony
was of great joy to his parents, as they
got to appreciate and celebrate the first
achievement of many with other great
American family friends only one short
year after moving to the country. They
were living a part of their American
dream. Enrolling at UW-Milwaukee,
Peter pursued his passion for history
and linguistics, which was a good
approach for a new student coming into
a new world. After UW-Milwaukee,
Peter studied at the Les Aspin Center for
Government in Washington, D.C. and
also had internship at the United States
Congress. Following his educational
career, Peter felt the need to give back

and pass along the American culture
and way of living to other less fortunate
countries of Latin America. He is now
a returned Peace Corps volunteer,
Paraguay 2007-2009. According to his
parents, Peter has reaped the fruits
of the real American soil, still in hard
pursuit to realize his own American
dream. Peter continues to stay focused
and determined to make something of
his parent’s great sacrifice.
The cultural transition for Aldo was
by far the easiest for anyone in the
family. Only a few days after landing
in Milwaukee, Aldo was enrolled at
Whitefish Bay Middle School. He could
not speak any of the language, however
with the help of many dedicated staff
members at the middle school and the
Whitefish Bay community, he was able
to learn and adapt quickly. It was the
dedication of his teachers that made
this transition a very smooth process for
him. The next natural step for Aldo was
attending Whitefish Bay High School,
where he not only perfected his English,
but also where he met his lifelong best
friends. These Whitefish Bay friends
and families made him feel welcome
in the community and also played a
significant role in shaping him and
teaching him all about the “American”
culture. Playing sports at WFBHS,
especially being one of the captains of
the football team, is what really taught
him the life lessons necessary for the
next phase of life. Such lessons and
teachings he still finds valuable to this
day at 26. Upon graduating high school,
Aldo attended Marquette University,
where he graduated with a Bachelor’s in
Biomedical Engineering.
Participating at the presidential
inauguration in Washington D.C.,
Aldo’s journeys to Australia and
Europe, and being a Les Aspin Center
for Government Alumnus are life
events that all have their roots in
Aldo’s upbringing in the Whitefish
Bay Community and the Whitefish Bay
education system. At 26, over half his
life has been spent in Whitefish Bay;
therefore, this is where he calls home.
Graduating from Marquette University
was another token towards achieving
the American Dream, but as far as he
is concerned, he has a way to go yet.
“This community has taught me how
to not be complacent and to always
keep looking ahead”. The biggest
challenge for Aldo was just like
every other recent college graduate,
what is the next step towards a real
life? However he knows, fighting,
working hard and keeping the big
picture in mind will get him to
where he wants to be.
Without a doubt the Tase family
feels abundantly blessed to be
given the opportunity to call the
U.S., but most importantly, WFB,
their home. Athina concludes it
best, “The American soil is huge
and rich with opportunity, but
lucky are the ones who recognize
and build on the fruits that this
land of opportunity has to offer.
There is so much room in America for
everyone, you can live as you please and
if there is one thing that the America we
came to did for us is that it rewarded us
for our hard work and sacrifice.”

NORTH SHORE FIRE RESCUE
WFB POLICE DEPARTMENT
Pedestrian Safety
Parental Oversight in the Electronic Age
As summer break for many schools begins
to wind down in the next several weeks,
North Shore Fire Rescue would like to provide some safety reminders to drivers and
pedestrians alike. In the coming weeks,
pedestrian traffic will increase significantly
during the morning and afternoon “rush
hour”, especially in the areas surrounding
most North Shore schools.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 4,280 pedestrians were killed in traffic related crashes in
2010 and another 70,000 were injured. This
statistic equates to one crash related pedestrian death every 2 hours and a pedestrian
injury every 8 minutes.
Following some simple recommendations can help make both pedestrians and
vehicle operators safer.
What can pedestrians do to help prevent injury?
•Pedestrians should increase their visibility at
night and in the very early morning hours by
carrying a flashlight when walking and by
wearing bright or reflective clothing.
•Whenever possible pedestrians should cross
the street at a designated crosswalk.
•It is much safer to walk on a sidewalk, but
if pedestrians must walk in the street, they
should walk facing traffic.
What can drivers do to help prevent injury?
•Drivers should have their headlights or
daytime running lights on whenever possible.
The lights help provide early warning and better visibility to pedestrians who are crossing
or walking in the street.
•Use extra caution and observe all posted
traffic and speed signage, especially around
posted “School Zones” and near crosswalks.
•Avoid using a cell phone or doing anything
that may distract you from concentrating on
driving.
Do your part to help ensure everyone can
stay as safe as possible!
Next Month’s Article: Always Be Prepared!
September is National Preparedness Month
for FEMA. North Shore Fire/Rescue will
explore some simple things to help ensure
you are prepared when emergencies strike.
The Village of Whitefish Bay is a very safe
community. Violent crime is extremely
low; in 2013 there were five violent crimes
in Whitefish Bay, and in 1980 there were
13. In over 25 years there has not been a
sexual assault perpetrated by a stranger in
Whitefish Bay. The rate of car accidents is
also very low. In 2013 there were 146 accidents in Whitefish Bay; in 1980 there were
296. In 1980 there was no such thing as
the Internet, personal computers, tablets
or smart phones. There was no means of
exchanging indecent photos electronically,
there was no way for children to engage
in on-line cyber relationships with sexual
offenders, there was no way to purchase
synthetic drugs electronically and cyber
bullying was an unknown concept. Unfortunately all of these things have occurred
in Whitefish Bay in the past year.
When used properly, the Internet can
aid our children in the learning process,
and smartphones can help keep parents
and children connected. But when these
devices are used improperly by our children, bad things can happen. The Internet
in many ways is the “new wild west.” It
is easy for criminals and those with evil
intentions to hide. The size and the pervasiveness of the Internet make it extremely
difficult for regulatory entities to monitor.
The first line of defense for your children
and the Internet is you, the parent.
When you first allow your children access
to the Internet, or you give them their first
smartphone, let your child know that this
is a privilege that you are allowing them
to have. Let them know that you will be
checking their devices and their content
on a regular basis. Then, check their devices on a random and regular basis. Checking their devices provides structure and
safety for your children. Kids who know
that their devices will be searched by their
parents on a regular basis are provided
a deterrent to engage in misbehavior on
their devices. Knowing that their devices
will be checked provides the child an easy
out when confronted by outsiders requesting their participation in inappropriate
or illegal activities. Checking your child’s
devices and search histories, text messaging and social media usage can provide
you with the insight to know if your child
is being bullied or being approached by
adults with potentially criminal intent.
Trust between children and their parents
is an important part of the relationship.
Setting boundaries early and being consistent and reasonable in enforcing these
boundaries is even more important, for a
child’s emotional well-being and especially for their safety. Regularly monitoring
your child’s device usage is an essential
step in keeping your child safe.

I was recently honored to be designated as

give back to the community in the best way
possible. That is when I came across a site
called Distinguished Young Women.

I will be participating in the State
Program in August, where I will
be spending a whole week with
the sixteen other Distinguished
Young Women of Wisconsin and
help other communities with
various projects. There will be
a showcase on August 2, at the
South Milwaukee Performing
Arts Center, where we will all
be performing our fitness choreography, talents, self-expression,
and such. I encourage all of you
to check it out if you are interested! That day, a winner will
be chosen and will be representing Wisconsin at the National
Program at Alabama, and many
scholarships will be given.
I did not really understand how
meaningful this program would become to
me when I first went to the At-Large Program. I did not expect much and believed
that this would simply be an opportunity
for expressing myself as who I am. But once
the program was over, I gained many life
lessons and experiences through the interviews and performances. I recommend
any rising junior girl (and younger girls) to
look into this program and try it out! Who
knows, you might be more distinguished
than you think.
