Here’s a big (and scary) misconception
you might have about your data backups:
backing up your data guarantees a fast
recovery. It does NOT! In short, data
backup is nothing more than copying
files. There are a number of ways data
can be backed up, both manually and
automatically—and you don’t need to
know all the technical ins and outs of
them. But what you DO need to know is
whether your current backup is set up in
a way that would allow for the fastest
possible recovery time in the event of a
disaster or data-erasing event. You might
be shocked to find out it’s not as fast and
easy as you’d like to think.
Disaster Recovery Vs. Data Backup
Let’s start by defining what “disaster
recovery” is. Disaster recovery is the
process by which you will RECOVER the
functionality of your data, software
programs, devices and business
operations in the event of a “disaster.” A
disaster can be as simple as a server
crashing or a more catastrophic event
such as a tornado. But here’s the real
kicker: MOST data loss is not due to a
natural disaster such as a flood,
hurricane, tornado, etc. Most data is lost
because of simple human error, such as
employees accidentally deleting files,
faulty hardware or even a virus or hacker
attack that brings down your entire
network.
start working again. Not so.
Here’s a perfect analogy:
Let’s suppose you could back up all the
personal items you have in your house—
your clothes, furniture, valuables, etc.,
and somehow maintain a copy of
everything in a warehouse 1,000 miles
away from your current residence. Now
let’s suppose (and God forbid) your
house burns down, destroying
everything with it. You’d be relieved that
you had a copy of everything somewhere
else, so it’s not a total loss (which, by the
way, is why your backups need to be
OFF-SITE, not on devices in your office).
But here’s the problem: If your house
burned down, you might have a copy of
everything you own, but you no longer
have a place to put it. So, for starters, you
have to rebuild the house. Next you have
the project of getting everything out of
that storage unit into your NEW house.
Then you have to rearrange everything.
This is exactly how most backup systems
work UNLESS you are running “image”
backups. An image will allow you to
restore your server, PC, device, etc.,
FAST because you’re not backing up
single items but, instead, the ENTIRE
HOUSE.

Security Watch: The Biggest Problem In Business Today
Using Social Media While On
Vacaon
With summer vacation season in
full swing, here are some social
media tips to keep you safe.
Like many things in life, it’s
important to “know thy enemy.”
And here’s the scary truth: 80% of
thieves are using social media sites
like Facebook, Twitter and
Foursquare. So here’s what can you
do to keep yourself safe:
1. As tempting as it might be to
make your friends jealous by
“checking in” at your deluxe resort
in the Caribbean, resist the
temptation. If you’re in the
Caribbean, no one is at home. And
criminals know that. They are then
free to destroy your home and steal
anything valuable. What a way to
ruin a vacation!
2. Resist the urge to post pictures
too. If you’re relaxing in your
hammock, on the beach, with your
umbrella drink, your valuables at
home now have a bull’s-eye on
them.
3. Review your privacy settings.
Make sure your Facebook posts are
set to private. Twitter and
Instagram accounts are set to
‘public’ by default. Change these to
private too, at least while you’re on
vacation.
4. As shocking as this might sound,
you could simply unplug yourself
for your entire vacation. After a day
or two, you might even enjoy not
having your phone in your hand
every waking hour.
In an October 2006 cover story, “The Search
for Talent,” The Economist reported that
finding the right people is the single biggest
problem in business today:
THESE are heady days for most
companies. Profits are up. Capital
is footloose and fancy-free. Trade
unions are ge(ng weaker. India
and China are adding billions of
new cheap workers and
consumers to the world economy.
This week the Dow Jones
Industrial Average hit a new high.
But talk to bosses and you
discover a gnawing worry – about
the supply of talent.
“Talent” is one of those irrita0ng
words that has been hijacked by
management gurus. It used to
mean innate ability, but in
modern business it has become a
synonym for brainpower (both
natural and trained) and
especially the ability to think
crea0vely. That may sound waffly,
but look around the business
world and two things stand out:
the modern economy places an
enormous premium on
brainpower, and there is not
enough to go round.
The best evidence of a “talent
shortage” can be seen in hightech firms. The likes of Yahoo!
and Microso8 are ba9ling for the
world’s best computer scien0sts.
Google, founded by two
brainboxes, uses billboards
bearing a mathema0cal problem:
solve it for the telephone number
to call. And once you have been
lured in, they fight like hell to
keep you: hence the growing
number of Silicon Valley lawsuits.
I doubt that surprised most readers. The fact
is, virtually every manager struggles to find
and hire the talent necessary to drive his or
her business forward.
We’ve all been there. We’ve all heard the
horror stories of the CEO who sank a
mul0billion-dollar public company, the
district manager who allowed his region to
fall behind compe00on, even the execu0ve
assistant who couldn’t keep a schedule.
Most of us have lived those stories and
could add dozens more to the list. Even we
ourselves in some cases are the ones who
made bad “Who” decisions.
A few years back, my wife and I hired a
nanny we’ll call Tammy to look a8er our
children. Unfortunately, I had what my sixyear-old calls a “space-out moment,” and
when I hired her I neglected to apply the
methods I’ve wri9en about in all my books,
lectures and consul0ng.
Not many months later, I was on the phone
in my home office when I saw my two-yearold running naked down the driveway. I
immediately hung up on my client and raced
outdoors to stop my daughter before she
ran into the street.
Fortunately, the FedEx truck was not
barreling up the driveway at that moment.
Then I went looking for Tammy to find out
what had happened. All she could say was,
“Well, it’s hard to keep track of all of the
kids.” It is, but, as I explained to her, that’s
exactly what she had been hired to do.
Some0mes a “Who” problem can mean life
or death.

WINDOWS 10
If you’re using Windows 7 or Windows
8.1, then you may have no0ced (or are
constantly reminded by pop-ups) that
you can upgrade to Windows 10 for
FREE. However, before doing so, you
need to make sure that your current
applica0ons (An0virus, accoun0ng
so8ware, etc.) and hardware will work
with Windows 10. I have seen some
instances of older printers not working
a8er the upgrade, but not any other
hardware compa0bility issues. The
upgrade will run a hardware and
applica0on compa0bility check before
the upgrade, but somehow misses
some older printers. Older applica0ons
may have issues as well, so check with
the so8ware vendor (some so8ware
vendors have Windows 10 info on
their site) before running the upgrade.
Most applica0ons will be compa0ble
with Windows 10 if they ran on
Windows 7, but may require you to
install the latest version, especially
An0virus and backup applica0ons.
If you do the upgrade then decide you
don’t like it, there is the op0on to

within 30 days. Note that the
