SCRIPTS:

the Reference Desk of the Wood County
District Public Library. They cannot be
checked out, but they can be read on site if
you want to read the script before auditions.
AUDITION DATES:
Students can come to either audition on
Sunday or Monday. They do not need to
come to both, but they should expect to stay
the whole time.
Sunday, August 21st 2:30-4:00 pm
Monday, August 22nd 6:30–8:00 pm
St Marks Lutheran Church
315 S. College Dr.
Bowling Green, Ohio 43402
PERFORMANCES:
Performances will take place at Otsego High
School. 18505 Tontogany Creek Rd,
Tontogany, OH 43565. Admission is $5.
Assembled for Sports Day, the animals cannot
find anybody to compete with the fleet hare
in the cross-country race until the slowmoving tortoise agrees to challenge him. In
the course of the race, the scatter-brained
hare tends to get diverted by his encounters
with members of the human race. Meanwhile,
the tortoise plods steadily and relentlessly on
to the finish line. Only the animals speak
intelligible language. The humans' gobblede-gook is as incomprehensible to us as to
our animal friends.
NOTE: WINTER SHOW
The next HYT production is our winter show
and is based on Aesop's Fables. 6-12 year-old
students can audition Sept. 18th and 19th.
Performances are Nov. 11, 12, 13. The cast has
12 students. First consideration for our winter
show will go to those who were not cast in
this show.
WHAT THE DIRECTORS ARE
LOOKING FOR:
Can you be heard? The directors wants to
know if the audience can hear and understand
you. Use your strongest voice.
Are you making choices with the text that
show off a character? Engage the audience.
Use expression!
Most importantly, have fun!
HOW TO PREPARE:
Students should prepare one of the
suggested monologues. Monologues are not
required from auditioning students but are
encouraged.

AUDITION MONOLOGUES:
Fleet: Why don't we start? I'll just win this race, then run over to Hambledon Hill for tea with the Moles
-- it's only ten miles. Where's Reynard? I can beat Reynard with one paw strapped to my back! I
can run faster and straighter and longer than any animal in the Woodlands. I can run so fast,
that if I set out now to the Cabbage Field to fetch a head for dinner, I should meet myself
coming back! I could stop for fifty naps, and still beat any of you slow-coaches. And if you don't
believe me, just enter for the Cross Country now. Come on -- anybody. I tell you what, I'll give
any of you five minutes start. How about that?
Sett:
Now, here's the Start -- Frog Rock. First check point -- the Bramble Thicket. Then to the River
Bank. From there to the Grassy Bank, then to Mr. Brush's tree, half a mile to the Cornfield, then
past the end of the Keeper's Cottage, and a straight run home to here again in the Old Quarry
and Frog Rock, where the runners have to pass Frog Rock and do one more full lap of the
Quarry to win. There will be judges at each point, and Mr. Basket will take short cuts and be
general referee.
Spiney:
Could you manage a raw egg? Very good for settling an upset tummy. Not only that, all the best
runners suck raw eggs. It's a fact! Makes them go like the wind! Luckily, I have one. Found it by
the haystack, freshly laid this morning. Very hard to come by these days with all the hens living
in blocks of flats. Years since I found a full clutch of eggs out in the open. better come to my
house. You are all right for time, I expect. Mr. Sloe will be miles behind.
Fleet:
Carrots! Oo-oo, beauties! Young and tender. Nobody guarding them. Very remiss. If I grew
carrots like that I should watch them night and day. If people don't guard their carrots, they jolly
well deserve to lose them. Wouldn't take me two minutes. Old Fat-legs is way behind -- and this
is the last point. Better just make sure he hasn't got a lift on a hay wagon. Sort of mean trick he
would get up to. No, he's not out of Nobbet's Spiney yet. Not only are we Hares in general, and
myself in particular, the fastest, most intelligent, and prettiest of the Woodlanders, but I am also
the agilest vaulterer-rer of garden walls in the country!
