LAST DAY OF SCHOOL
FOR 2016
MONDAY 19TH DECEMBER
1.30PM FINISH
On Monday 12th December our Grade 6 students took part in
their Grade 6 Graduation Ceremony. This was a significant
event not only for the students, but also for the families, with
some of our families having their youngest child graduating
from Grade 6 this year. Thank you to the parents who have
been part of the organising committee for the planning of the
Graduation Lunch, along with Jamie Rolfe, the Grade 6 team
and the staff that were involved for their organisation of the
Grade 6 Graduation.
Thank you to our grade 6 students for the responsibility they
have taken on this year and the leadership they have shown.
Thank you also to our School Captains Alana and William,
Vice Captains Ashley and Ayyaz, along with Sports Captains
Charlize and Tristan for the leadership they have shown
throughout the year.
Meet the Teacher
Students met their 2017 teacher Thursday. It was great to
see students settling into their 2017 grade as I moved
around the school.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK
All parents need a current
Working With Children Check to
help in the classroom and to
participate on excursions. The
application guide and form are
NOW AVAILABLE ON LINE.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
Pre-loved uniforms are available from the office for a
donation of $2 per item.
PARKING:
No parents should be entering the staff
car park to drop off or collect their
children from school. Moving cars
and excited children are a recipe for
disaster.
Medications
Please note: A Department of Education form
states ‘wherever possible medication should be
scheduled outside of school hours eg:
medication required 3 times per day is
generally not required during a school
day: it can be taken before and after
school and before bed’.
So it is preferred that students do not bring
medications to school.
Safety in Car Parks
Our community is reminded to take extreme
care with driving and parking in and around the
school car parks. Drivers are asked to drive at a
walking pace, respect and co-operate with other
drivers at all times, ensuring that students are
only dropped off in safe areas and not within
carriageways. Drivers be respectful of local
resident driveway access to their homes. Please
ensure that you are parking in the designated
parking zones.
BIKES AND SCOOTERS AT SCHOOL
Please lock your bikes with a bike lock, when
you ride to school.
Riding and Scooting while on school grounds is
not permitted at any time.
Thank you for your cooperation.
LOST PROPERTY
Lost Property is
located in the
foyer outside the
Grade 6
classrooms.
HATS!
As part of our Sun Smart Policy, all students will
need to be wearing a hat during recess, lunch and
outdoor activities during term 4. The best type of
hat is one which shades the head, face, eyes, ears
and neck.
2017 Essential Educational Items $180
School Council has set the school fees for 2017 at
$180 (no change from 2016) and parents are able
to pay this from now on.
The invoices for 2017 have been sent home with
the eldest student in each family. Grades Prep to
Three will have the supplies delivered directly to
the classrooms ready for commencement in 2017.
Students in Grades Four to Six will receive school
packs after full payment is made at the school
office. Payment can be made and student packs
for Grade Four, Grade Five and Grade Six collected

OUR TAEKWONDO BLACK BELTERS
Congratulations to two of our students, Charlize and Jai on receiving their black belt in Taekwondo.
Charlize and Jai have been practising and participating in the art of Taekwondo for approximately seven
years. Taekwondo is a Korean Martial Art, characterized by its emphasis on head height kicks and fast
kicking techniques.
Over the past seven years, Charlize and Jai aged 12 and 10 have progressed through their grading and
have successfully become the youngest members of SES TAEKWONDO to be awarded their Black Belt.
The discipline required to receive this high level of achievement is difficult for most adults to attain and
is evident that these two students have worked tirelessly, particularly over the past twelve months to
reach this milestone.
Congratulations Charlize and Jai on such an outstanding achievement and we wish you well in your
future endeavours as Participants and Instructors in the art of Taekwondo.

Slapped cheek or Fifth syndrome

"Slapped cheek" is a viral infection caused by a virus called parvovirus B19. It is also called 'fifth
disease' or erytherma infectiosum.
Slapped cheek usually affects children between the ages of four and 10 years but can happen at any
age, even in adulthood. Most infections do not have any symptoms. Six out of ten people in the
population have had the virus by the time they are adults. It is not life threatening and complications
are rare.
Signs and symptoms
o
o
o
o
o
Symptoms can take between four and 14 days to appear after getting the virus.
The symptoms are usually so mild that many people don't even know they have had the virus.
The first symptoms can include fever, headache, stomach upsets, aches and pains. This is the time
when the virus can be spread to others, mainly through saliva.
A bright red rash appears on the cheeks from three to seven days after getting the virus. The cheeks
look like they have been slapped, hence the name Slapped Cheek.
Your child may also have a different rash on the chest, back, arms and legs. The infection looks like a
pink lace pattern on the skin. The rash can come and go for several weeks, especially if the skin is
exposed to sunlight or after exercise.
Causes
Slapped cheek is caused by a virus called the human parvovirus B19. This is different from the parvovirus that is
seen in cats and dogs.
How is it spread?
Slapped cheek is spread by touching or breathing in the coughed or sneezed fluid drops from an infected
person.
Treatment
Most children do not need any treatment except for rest to allow the body to fight the infection. Fever may be
controlled with paracetamol. Antibiotics will not help because slapped cheek is caused by a virus.
At home care
Once you can see the rash on the face, children cannot spread the infection to others. Children can keep
going to school or daycare.

Follow-up
There is usually no specific follow up needed. A few children may develop swelling and pain in the
joints of their hands and feet. If this happens they should see a doctor for advice on how to treat these
symptoms.
Special consideration
o
You should speak to your child's medical team if you suspect your child has slapped cheek and your
child is taking long term steroids or is immune-compromised (i.e. on chemotherapy or has had an organ
transplant).
o
Contact the medical team or your family doctor for advice if your child has sickle cell anaemia or severe
anaemia (low level of red blood cells in the blood).
o
If you are pregnant and exposed to someone with slapped cheek, ask your family doctor to test if you
have had human parvovirus B19 in the past by performing a parvovirus IgG serology test. Remember
the person with slapped cheek disease is infectious two weeks before the rash appears. If you have
already had human parvovirus B19 then there are no concerns for your unborn baby. If you have not,
your unborn baby can get a type of anaemia (low level of red blood cells in the blood). This is rarely
serious and usually resolves by itself. Your obstetrician can provide more advice. The virus does not
cause any other problems for your baby.
Key points to remember
o
o
o
Slapped cheek is caused by a virus and antibiotics will not work to treat it.
Symptoms can vary between children but many won't even know they have had it because the infection
shows up with very few symptoms.
Once there is a rash on the face, the child with the rash is not
infectious and cannot spread the infection to others. They can
go to school or play centre as usual.

The Positive Parenting Telephone Service:
Support for grandparents caring for
grandchildren, fathers and rural families
Parenting has the biggest impact on how well children do in life, but contrary to popular
belief, people are not born knowing how to be good parents. Parenting is a set of skills that
are learnt ‘on the job’ and, they can always be improved.
Gateway Health is trialling a parenting support program delivered via telephone or online
specifically for grandparents, fathers and rural families from across Victoria who sometimes
find it difficult to attend parent support services in person.
The Positive Parenting Telephone Service (PPTS) makes it easy to access a proven parenting
support program delivered by qualified parent support workers from your home at a time that
suits you – daytime, evenings and weekends.
PPTS will help parents and carers develop the skills to:

build better relationships with your children

encourage the behaviours you want to see from your children

teach children to think before they act and to keep busy without constant
adult attention

teach your children new skills, to solve problems for themselves and know
when to ask for help

set family rules that are realistic and followed.
Parents and carers will be supported by weekly telephone calls over 6 to 10 weeks. You can
also participate in PPTS online - with or without telephone support. The program is currently
free to all grandparents caring for grandchildren, fathers and rural families from across
Victoria.
Victorian schools and early childhood services are encouraged to share information about this
program with families in their community.
