BugaBees LLC 6907 University Avenue, Suite 265, Middleton WI 53562 www.thebugabees.com FOOD ALLERGY FACTS Courtesy of Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network PMS 360 PMS Black • Food allergies are a growing public health concern in the U.S. • More than 15 million Americans have food allergies. An estimated 9 million, or 4% of adults have food allergies. Nearly 6 million, or 1 in 13 children have food allergies. • The incidence of food allergy is highest in young children under the age of 3. • Peanut allergies tripled in children from 1997-2008. • Children with food allergies are 2 to 4 times more likely to have other related conditions such as asthma compared to children without food allergies. • Food allergy is believed to be the leading cause of anaphylaxis outside the hospital setting. Every 3 minutes, a food allergy reaction sends someone to the emergency department -- that equals to approximately 200,000 emergency department visits a year. Every 6 minutes, the reaction involves anaphylaxis. • Eight foods account for 90 percent of all food-allergic reactions in the U.S.: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (e.g., walnuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios, pecans), wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish. • Each year in the U.S., it is estimated that anaphylaxis caused by food results in 150 deaths to 200 deaths. Death can be sudden, sometimes occurring within minutes. • There is no cure for food allergies. Strict avoidance of food allergens and early recognition andmanagement of allergic reactions to food are important measures to prevent serious health consequences. • Even trace amounts of a food allergen can cause a reaction. • Most people who’ve had an allergic reaction to something they ate thought that it was safe. • Food allergies are life-altering for everyone involved and require constant vigilance. • Early administration of epinephrine (adrenaline) is crucial to successfully treating anaphylactic reactions. Epinephrine is available by prescription in a self-injectable device (EpiPen® or Twinject®). BugaBees LLC 6907 University Avenue, Suite 265, Middleton WI 53562 www.thebugabees.com
