4 March 2016 Dear Parents and Carers, Rock Challenge What an amazing day we had at last Friday’s Rock Challenge at the Guildhall. It was a very busy and long day for everyone! On the night the children performed brilliantly and won 5 awards. They were – o Hampshire County Council Award of Excellence for Entertainment o Radian Award for excellence for Soundtrack o Hampshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team Award for Excellence of Concept o Be Your Best Foundation Award for Healthy Lifestyle o Pauline Quirke Academy Award for Spirit of J Rock. This last award is the one which all the other schools vote for as the school which is the most supportive and friendliest. We were all thrilled to receive this award. The children were a credit to Oakfield and we were all so proud of them! If you would like to see their performance, there will be a viewing of it on Thursday 10th March at 3:15pm in the hall, everyone is welcome. This will also be the time when the children will receive their Rock Challenge badges. We hope that you will be able to join us. Thank you to Miss Churcher for all her hard work and to the children for their great efforts. Playground Improvements We are really pleased with the work done to improve both playgrounds. The fitness equipment has been installed on the junior playground whilst a tyre park has been installed on the infant playground. We are very grateful for the grant of £10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund, £3,000 from FOO and devolved capital funds from school. Today the majority of the children had a go on the fitness equipment on the Junior playground and they all thoroughly enjoyed it! We have to wait until Monday before the tyre park on the Infant playground can be used. The equipment is only to be used under the supervision of school staff and it will be used at playtimes, on a rota basis and also in PE lessons. Children are NOT allowed to use it at any other time so please make sure that before or after school you do not let your child use the equipment. The equipment is only suitable for children under 11 years old. World Book Day Yesterday everyone enjoyed sharing our favourite book with each other and taking part in lots of book themed activities during the day. The children are taking home their vouchers today. Non Uniform Day As part of their topic on Water, Woodpeckers Y5 are organising a non-uniform day on Friday 18th March in aid of the charity Just a Drop. The children told us all about the work of the charity and why they had chosen them at whole school assembly on Wednesday. We couldn’t believe that a child dies every 20 seconds from water related diseases and that £1 can provide a child with clean water to drink for 10 years, so Woodpeckers are hoping that they raise lots of money for this very deserving cause. On Friday 18th the children pay £1 to come to school all dressed in blue or in a water related theme (e.g. water scientist, water engineer or even a mermaid or pirate). Woodpeckers are also organising activities in the afternoon as well as selling healthy drinks during the day so the children will need to bring in additional money to take part in this. Please can this be brought in on the day in a named envelope or purse. Absence messages To leave an absence message please ensure that you ring 02380 862530. Sometimes when we ring you, we will use the fax line to ring out on, the answerphone is not connected to the fax line number. Some messages left on our answerphone are very difficult to understand. If we are unable to work out the message then we will automatically send a Parentmail text to all parents of children who are absent from school on that day. As an alternative the Parentmail option to advise us of an absence does work very well if you would like to use it. Secondary School Open Morning Portsmouth High School for girls are holding an open day on Thursday 10th March from 9 – 11am. You can drop in on lessons and see the school in action on a normal teaching day. No booking is required but you can find out more on www.portsmouthhigh.co.uk. Data Collection Forms and Health Questionnaires We’ve have now received about 95% of the forms back completed and signed so far, please could those who have not yet returned them please do so urgently.
