February 6th marks the debut
of The Advocate, our AAUW
Harrisonburg e-newsletter. It
is the inspired brainchild of its
co-editors, Mary Perramond
and Marty Brown. Mary and
Marty feel that our members
need a more personal venue to
share Branch news than allowed by our FB page and web
site. It will appear monthly
from September to May and
will include a “cover story,”
membership news, profiles of
1 or 2 members, and a calendar. This issue’s feature story
by Mary celebrates the Jan.
21st Women’s March. Laura’s
bio showcases JMU professor
Kristin Wylie, who was a recipient of a National grant for her
doctoral thesis research. At the
February 4th Board meeting,
Mary and Marty were appointed to Board positions as coeditors. They invite your suggestions for future editions.
They would also welcome a
volunteer to help with layout
and graphics.

By Mary Perramond
We were young and old, female and male,
gay and straight, all different skin shades,
surely of many different religious convictions, but truly united in our purpose. The
sheer massive size of this march meant that
it was actually more of an “Occupy DC”
event because we could do nothing eventually but spread out into adjacent avenues,
filling all the streets around the Capitol.
Those of us who took the bus to DC walked
over 10 miles from RFK Stadium to the Capitol and beyond, cheered along by supportive people in neighborhoods sporting
signs, even the now famous ‘welcome,
neighbor’ sign which originated in Harrisonburg! To summarize, this was one of the
most amazing and heartening events I have
ever been part of, a huge outpouring of
patience, caring, kindness, solidarity, and
humanity. Now, the challenge is to keep
that warmth going with some ‘fire in our
gut’ commitment!

The Affordable Care Act:
The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also
known as Obamacare, was enacted in 2010
and has had widespread positive impacts
on women’s health, including reducing
the number of women who are uninsured
by 44 percent. The law eliminates “gender
rating” charging women higher premiums
for individually purchased health care plans
and it ensures coverage of women’s health
services and preventive care. It also expanded
the Medicaid program for low-income individuals in certain states. But the law is facing
a legitimate threat in the new administration

Meet Our Members
Kristin Wylie,
who is originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has been a
member of AAUW since she was a graduate student at the University of Texas in Austin.
After receiving
her master’s degree in Latin American Studies and her doctoral degree in Government
from the University of Texas, Kristin came to Harrisonburg four years ago to accept a full-time faculty
position in the
Department of Political Science at JMU. Kristin’s husband, Case, is a visiting assistant
professor in
JMU’s Geographic Sciences Program. In addition to the fact that both Kristin and Case
are from Louisiana, they also share a scholarly interest in Brazil, where they both have conducted research. Kristin’s
research focuses on women’s representation in Brazil. If you ask Kristin what she is passionate about,
she will tell you that she believes very strongly in gender and racial equity and these issues provide the common focus for her research, teaching, community service and philanthropy. At JMU, she teaches a course
on Women in Politics and is the faculty advisor for the JMU Feminist Collective, a student organization that is dedicated to
feminist issues and activism. Among the Collective’s activities is attending the Feminist Majority Foundation’s National Young
Feminist Leadership Conference, which is held yearly in March. For Kristin, joining AAUW-Harrisonburg was a natural extension of her dedication to women’s issues and equality. Many of us who have met Kristin at chapter events have also had the
opportunity to meet Kristin’s delightful daughter, Lucy, who is eight months old. Among Kristin’s other special interests are
hiking with Case, Lucy and their dog, Jefe, and, together with Case, playing soccer on an adult coed team.
