As part of this celebration, the Court plans to offer Continuing Legal Education opportunities to learn more about the litigation of historic cases in this building. In the first installment of this series, Mr. Fred Hicks, who served as Judge McMillan's law clerk while the Swann case was pending, will provide a unique perspective on this famous case, including a discussion of some of the original documents from the case file, which have been obtained from the archives. Speaker Bio: After earning his undergraduate and law degrees from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and being admitted to the North Carolina State Bar in 1968, Mr. Hicks began his legal career as a law clerk to the Honorable James B. McMillan, former United States District Court Judge for the Western District of North Carolina. During this clerkship, Mr. Hicks worked on the landmark case Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, which came before Judge McMillan and was later affirmed on appeal to the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Hicks has had a distinguished legal career and has received numerous accolades, including being listed in The Best Lawyers in America in Family Law since 1991, in the North Carolina Super Lawyers since 2007, and in the Business North Carolina Magazine’s “Legal Elite” since 2008. Mr. Hicks was the recipient of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Distinguished Service Award in 1995.
