Island Hopping - Ciclismo Classico

MEDITERRANEAN ISLAND HOPPING 2017
Ability Level: Intermediate / Duration: 11 days / 10 nights
Island Hopping
Experience the best of northern Sardinia
and western Corsica
Outdoor enthusiasts, photographers, nature and water lovers alike will
be dazzled by this trip’s dramatic beauty. The route follows the coastline,
allowing you to experience the best of northern Sardinia and western
Corsica. Distinct and exotic, Italian-influenced Sardinia and French-flavored
Corsica enchant all who visit their Mediterranean shores. In Sardinia, salty
pastel houses fade into chestnut groves and cork forests; rolling hills take us
to thousands of prehistoric Nuraghi towers; sculpted pink rock formations
and dunes melt into the sea. In hilly Corsica, called “beautiful city” by
the ancient Greeks, we’ll cycle by a dream of jagged purple-pink rock
formations, dramatic white cliffs, and translucent blue coves.

Highlights
ALGHERO
Welcome to Sardinia!
Daily Mileage - 15 miles
We meet at the hotel at 12:30 pm for lunch & introductions, followed by
bike fittings and a quick spin along the coast. There are several short hills
but truly amazing views that are compared to coast of Northern California.
For our first night’s feast we treat ourselves to exquisite flavor at La Movida.
Riding Terrain - Rolling along
the coast
Hotel - Hotel Calabona
• Location: Alghero
• Duration: 1 Night
• www.hotelcalabona.com/
This beautiful seaside hotel faces the splendid Riviera del Corallo (Riviera of

Caccia). Its close proximity to the city center and the Grotte di Nettuno
(Neptune’s Caves) make it a perfect choice for Alghero.
DAY 2
Highlights
CASTELSARDO
AND LUNCH IN AN
AGRITURISMO
Today’s ride gives you a taste of inland Sardinia – vast, sweeping fields
of wheat and seemingly undeveloped farmland, distant villages framed
by cacti, olive trees and maquis bush. The sky is expansive and the wind
can be strong. Because these villages are fairly quiet, the locals will surely
be roused by our visit! One of the highlights today is a Ciclismo Classico
lunch at an Agriturismo, a family-run farm that provides organic and locallysourced food. This is the best way to learn more about traditional recipes
and the Sardinian agricultural lifestyle, important aspects to explain its
population’s life expectancy, one of the highest in the world!
Daily Mileage - 26/51 miles
Riding Terrain - A few great
climbs and descents
Hotel - Hotel Riviera
• Location: Castelsardo
• Duration: 1 Night

some traffic, but this will not take away from the gorgeous view of the sea.
Before lunch, we’ll experiences miles of maquis-covered landscape, literally
a sea of green. Maquis is a native and fragrant ground cover. Both the short
and long route provide little shade, so have sunblock and cold water ready.
After lunch the ride sweeps along the coast to Santa Teresa di Gallura with
Granite Mountains to the right and the blue sea to the left.
Located in the center of town, the Grand Hotel Capo Testa is famous for its
beaches, rocks, and the small hidden inlets. The hotel is a first class resort

wine and homemade mirto, a Sardinian liqueur.

P E D A L
Possibly the most scenic ride of the trip and a fitting grand finale to our
tour; many guests say that this ride is their all time favorite! The first couple
of climbs out of Porto are a bit tough, but be sure to look behind you at the
great view. After mile 7, it’s smooth sailing along an incredible road that
zigzags in and out of the trees: lush mountains with eucalyptus trees and
meandering cows and goats give way to views of the sea and coral-colored
points. From the top of Col de Palmarella, we descend into Fango and
begin our last 20 miles along a coastal road just above a rocky coast. Climb
through the valley to the tune of cowbells.
The Regina Hotel is located in the center of Calvi and offers panoramic
views of the sea, the mountains and of the Citadel, the legendary fortress at
the heart of this seaside resor The hotel offers an outdoor swimming pool
and a spa with a jacuzzi and hammam. Free WiFi is available throughout.
