Sabra, David, Garrett, and Sam sent poetry to the annual
Gordon Parks poetry contest.
West Bourbon Elementary’s fifth
grade students participated in the
sixth annual Gordon Parks poetry contest. This contest is a part of the
Gordon Parks annual celebration, held
on the Fort Scott Community College
campus. All fifth grade students in
Bourbon County were asked to compose a poem giving their individual
definition of diverstiy.
WBE fifth grade classes spent time
discussing what diversity is and the
many forms of diversity, while viewing photos from Gordon Parks’s collection to help visualize it.
This celebration honors the many
accomplishments of Gordon Parks,
who was born in Fort Scott and had
returned to this area many times. The
activities were held in the Gordon
Parks Center located in the Ellis Fine
Arts Center on the Fort Scott
Community College campus.
At the assembly each student read
his/her poem and was presented a
certificate and tokens of appreciation.
The students representing WBE were:
David, Garrett, Sam, and Sabra. Fifth
Grade Teacher Janet Jackson attended
the luncheon and assembly with the
students.
We congratulate our students for
such a fine job!

Parent’s Toolkit Class
News Release
SEK Community Mental Health
Center is now offering a class to assist
parents in building an effective parenting style and their own behavior toolkit. The class is open to the public to
include self-referrals, mental health
referrals, and referrals from outside
agencies. Classes will be held at the
Iola Mental Health Center office and
the Fort Scott Mental Health Center
office.
The fee is $25 for a two-hour class
and is due the day of attendance.
Parent training gives parents a
”tool kit” for working with their children’s behavior, It teaches us effective
parenting strategies, reminds us of parenting tools we may have forgotten,
and helps us explore the effectiveness
of tools we already use. Just as a hammer is a great tool, it can’t be used to
repair everything. When we find that
our comfortable and familiar way of
handling problems with our children is
not solving the problem, or is creating
more conflict than it solves, it helps to
go back to the “tool kit” and review
other parenting options. The more
tools we have, and the more practice
we have using them, the less stress we
will feel when a conflict occurs.
Please RSVP to 620-365-5717 by
Tuesday before each class is scheduled
in order to ensure space is available.
Please leave a contact number at that
time in case of cancellation or rescheduling.

WAW local poster winners
travel to Emporia for the
William Allen White
Celebration
Submitted by Sandra Abati, Librarian
Five students from West Bourbon
Elementary traveled to Emporia on
Sat., Oct. 10, to participate in the
William Allen White Celebration. This
annual event is held every fall to honor
the winners of the William Allen White
Book List.
The five WBE students who had
their posters displayed were Megan,
Draven, Gavin, Lindsey and John.
Students first participated in several activities the committee had
organized including face painting, science projects, and visiting animals that
were brought in from the Emporia
Zoo. After lunch the students joined
others from elementary and middle
schools across Kansas by marching
from the William Allen White Library
on the campus of Emporia State
University, through the streets of
Emporia to get to the William Lindsay
White Auditorium. This was where the
winning authors of last year’s books

spoke to the group.
Sara Pennypacker, author of
Clementine, was the winner of the 3-5
list. Jennifer Roy, author of Yellow Star,
was the winner of the 6-8 list. Both
authors spoke to the students about the
importance of reading and the joy they
have in writing for an audience. Before
the authors spoke, all of the students
attending were able to vote on the
posters that students from across the
state had sent in advertising the books
from the 2008-2009 book lists.
The book lists that are in the running for the 2010 Award are currently
displayed in the libraries at West
Bourbon
Elementary
and
the
UJH/UHS librarys. Any student in the
state of Kansas who reads at least two
books from the list is allowed to vote
on the winner for that list in April.
Several students at W.B.E. have already
started reading books from these lists.
