February 5,
2000 marks the Lunar New Year
and the beginning of the Year of
the Dragon. Chinese astrology
groups people into different
personality types according to the year
they were born. Each year is named for an
animal over a twelve-year cycle: rat, ox, tiger,
rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey,
rooster, dog and pig.
People born in dragon years are said to be charming, energetic, generous and
successful. They love to help out when things go wrong.
Dragon years in the 20th century are 1904, 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000.
Famous Dragons include Louisa May Alcott, Lewis Carroll, Bing Crosby, Salvador Dali,
Sigmund Freud, Martin Luther King, Shirley Temple, Raquel Welch, Ringo Starr, John
Lennon, Bruce Lee, Tom Jones, Robin Williams and Christopher Reeve.
Chinese tradition says that the Dragon is a very lucky sign - it's lucky to be a Dragon,
and to be friends with a Dragon!

These 25 Face of Australia stamps represent a
'snapshot' that shows who we are as a nation at
the beginning of the year 2000.
All of the photos were sent in by friends or relatives of the people on the
stamps as a result of an Australia-wide competition in 1999. The winners
were chosen from many thousands of entries. Judges in all states of
Australia selected photos to represent the wide variety of people who
make up our Australian community.
Now that you know how they were chosen, meet the people on the
stamps (each row is described from left to right):
Top row: Twin sisters, Nicholle & Meghan Triandis, QLD; cattleman
David Willis, QLD; environmentalist Natasha Bramley, SA; Cyril Watson,
NT; Mollie Dowdall, WA.
Row 2: Flying instructor Robin Dicks, WA; WWII veteran Mary Simons,
TAS; Peta & Samantha Nieuwerth, VIC; Dr John Matthews, VIC; Edith
Dizon-Fitzsimmons, VIC.
Row 3: Teacher Philippa Weir, QLD; Vietnam veteran John (Jack) Thurgar
MBE, NSW; Miguel Alzona, NSW; Rachael Thomson, QLD; Australia
Post employee Necip Akarsu, VIC.
Row 4: Justin Allan, NSW; Wadad Dennaoui, VIC; Jack Laity, VIC;
Kelsey Stubbin, QLD; Gianna Rossi, SA.
Row 5: Paris Hansch, NSW; Donald Whatham, NSW; Stacey Coull, NT;
Alex Payne, NSW; John Lodge, NSW.

It's that time of the year when
everyone starts to wonder: who will be
the next Australian Legend?
Each year since 1997 Australia Post has presented
awards to Australians who have made an
outstanding contribution to the Australian identity
and has featured them on a stamp issue.
The first in the series showed Sir Donald Bradman,
the greatest player in cricket history. The second
issue honoured six Australian Olympic Legends:
Betty Cuthbert, Herb Elliott, Dawn Fraser,
Marjorie Jackson, Murray Rose and Shirley
Strickland. The famous artist Arthur Boyd was
chosen last year.

arts festivals
Many different arts festivals take place around
Australia each year. These stamps celebrate our
five largest arts festivals.
The 45c stamps show (from left) Australia's oldest international arts
festival, Perth Arts Festival; Adelaide Festival, which is held every two
years; Sydney Festival; Melbourne Festival and Brisbane Festival.
All of these festivals feature local and international dancers, actors and
musicians. The festivals often also include films, art exhibitions and street
theatre performances.

Do you like to plant flowers and dig for
weeds? Sniffer loves to dig in the garden, but
he hasn't learnt how to plant anything yet.
Gardening is one of the most popular pastimes in Australia. Even those
of us who don't have green thumbs can enjoy the magic of relaxing or
playing in a beautiful garden.
These five stamps show a garden going through some of the changes of
the seasons. The first stamp shows a garden in winter; the rest of the
stamps show spring, summer and a hint of autumn.
You might also have noticed that the first two stamps show mainly
native plants such as banksias and bottlebrushes, while the rest show
mainly exotic flowers like roses and hibiscus.

Gardens are
pretty and they smell good
too. So does the booklet of
Garden stamps. It comes
with a scratch and sniff
cover that will remind you
of a favourite garden

Hi Gang
My kennel is overflowing with all of your great Freddo stamp designs! It was a hard job
choosing the winners...and even harder to choose just a few to show. Our next issue will
feature stamps commemorating Federation, an important event in Australian history. Send
us a picture of an important event in your family’s history, by 18 January 2000 and you
could win one of10 fantastic Year of the Dragon mouse mat prize packs.
Until next time...Love, Sniffer
