Giuseppe Mazzini
Giuseppe Mazzini was born in
Genoa in 1805.
His dad Giacomo was a doctor,
his mum Maria Drago was a
very religious woman. He
studied medicine but then he
became a politician.
His revolutionary ideas and the insurrections
weren’t useful for the liberation of Italy.
He founded the ‘Giovane Italia’ (Young Italy)
political society in Marseille in 1831, to
promote the Italian unification. The group's
motto was God and the People
Mazzini carried out his purpose and in 1834
founded the ‘Giovane Europa’ (Young
Europe), the union of ‘Young Switzerland’,
‘Young Poland’ and ‘Young Germany’
associations with the same ideas of freedom
and equality.
Mazzini was arrested many times because of his
revolutionary ideas and, after being in prison
in Palermo, he went into exile.
He died in Pisa on 10th March 1872.
• Mazzini is my hero because, thanks to him,
the democratic ideas spread all over Europe
and Italy became a unified country.
