Ring out, wild bells We wish you all a safe and happy New Year!

Ring out, wild bells
Lord Alfred Tennyson, 1809 - 1892
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.
Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes
But ring the fuller minstrel in.
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.
Ring out the grief that saps the mind
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.
Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.
Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.
Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.
We wish you all a safe and happy New Year!

Celebrating the life of Christ in the Church Year leads us to a more Passionate Worship
We have just marked the beginning of a new year 2017. In the Northern Hemisphere January is a winter month. Our lives are marked
by time and how we count it. We mark our years based upon their distance from the life of Christ. Each year has four seasons: Winter,
Spring, Summer, and Fall. We begin our year on January 1st, roughly a calendar established by the Romans and adjusted by the Church
many years later.
Many Christians celebrate and keep the church year. Some in our society continue to celebrate portions of the church year - especially
festivals and commemorations (like Christmas, Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, and Halloween or All Hallows Eve - known in the church
as the Eve of All Saints). Mostly society’s use of these festivals has little to do with their origins or faith message.
We keep time to orient our lives. It is disorienting to travel to Australia in January because it is summer there. It can be confusing to
be away from the regiment of work because we don’t know what day it is without the workday schedule. So calendars and seasons and
birthdays help us tell what time it is, how old we are, or where we find ourselves in life.
The church has its own sense of keeping time. We use seasons and festivals to help us find understanding and a pattern for our lives.
Winter is a season when we need to be ready for rain and cold temperatures, so we plan accordingly. Lent is a season when we need
to be ready for self-discipline and repentance, so we plan accordingly.
The church year includes the following seasons: Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter and Pentecost. Each season has a color
that corresponds to a theme in that season. Advent blue is a sign of yearning and hope. Christmas and Easter white is a sign of purity
and victory. Lenten purple is solemnity. Green seasons suggest growth. As Lutherans we use the seasons to help us tell the story of
Jesus: waiting for his arrival (Advent), celebrating His presence (Christmas), reminding us Christ has come for all people (Epiphany),
reflecting upon our need for God (Lent), celebrating Christ's victory over brokenness, sin, and death (Easter), and reminding us we live
by the Spirit of God, growing in grace and in the likeness of Jesus (Pentecost). One day, all things will be wrapped in and transformed
by the grace and mercy of God when God's love in Christ reigns over all (Late Pentecost). We keep seasons of the Church Year to remind
us to Whom we belong and where God is leading us.

Winter 2017: Galatians: Christian faith and Christian freedom (REFORMATION 500 Event)
Our study is written by Kit Kleinhans, a professor at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, who will share a four-session
Reformation Anniversary Bible study on “Galatians: Christian faith and Christian freedom.”
"Biblical scholars describe Paul’s letter to the Galatians as the Magna Carta of Christian freedom," Kleinhans writes.
"Martin Luther called it 'my Katie von Bora.' Like his marriage to Katie, Luther’s relationship with Galatians was a rich and
lasting one: over a period of 20 years, he published six commentaries on the epistle. Luther’s reformation was centered in
the doctrine of justification by grace through faith for Christ’s sake, which he saw as the heart of Paul’s letter to the Christians
in Galatia. It is also the heart of Paul’s–and–Luther’s message for us today."
Session 1: No other Gospel (Galatians 1:1-2:21)
Session 2: Children of God through faith (Galatians 2:19-3:29)
Session 3: Heirs of the promise (Galatians 3:24-4:31)
Session 4: For freedom Christ has set us free (Galatians 5:1-6:18)
Thank you!
Christmas this year was particularly difficult with the sudden death of my mom. The burden of shock and the waves of grief
have been bathed in the gracious love of this church family and friends of New Hope. The gift of memorial flowers from
the congregation was encouraging to our family. The cards, calls, texts, and messages of love and sympathy were each and
altogether remarkably helpful. The gift to help with flight expenses, food, gifts, invitations, personal conversations, and
hugs have been a grace to me. I cannot thank you enough for the outpouring of love and support. Each year the congregation
gives a generous Christmas gift and this year, along with all the other ways I’ve been blessed by New Hope, topped it off.
Thank you so much for the many ways you have loved and blessed us all year but especially during the last month and during
a more difficulty holiday season.

On December 19th Merle Zbrog took eight
sleeping mats to Holy Trinity Church for
the Conejo Valley Meals and Winter Shelter
program and surprised LSS. Our prayer is
that these mats can provide comfort,
warmth, and hope to some of those in
need. Thank you, Merle, for so diligently
crocheting them, to Ralph for cutting and
tying the bags, to Hank and the many
others for bringing the bags.
In addition to
the donations
they already
receive, there is
a significant
need for

The Tuesday Morning Bible Study
is led by Pastor Craig each Tuesday
from 9:30-11 AM in the social hall.
Our Bible Study is open to everyone.
Our new curriculum is: When God's
not fair - Coming to terms with a
merciful God - Meghan Johnston
Aelabouni helps us explore biblical
images of a God who acts beyond our
conceptions of what's "fair." From
Jonah's prayer to God from the belly of
a big fish to school-age siblings and
squabbling nations this fall we'll delve
into what it means to worship a God
who forgives the guilty, chooses the
unlikely and gives to those who haven't
"earned" it.
Monday Night
Bible Study
Women of all ages are invited and
encouraged to attend the Monday night
Bible Study. We are reading Max
Lucada’s “More To Your Story.”
Come join us as we discover our
place in God’s plan. We meet in the
New Hope Library from 7-8:30 PM
to be in study, prayer and fellowship
with one another as women and a
community of faith. There’s a place
at the table for you! Contact Mary
Ann Fiore (805-599-4380) for a
copy of the book.
Adult Sunday School
The Adult Sunday School
will begin a new study using a
resource called "The Wired Word."
In preparation for each session you
will receive by email a weekly study
to preview. It will examine a current
event and apply the light of God's
Word to it. Using the Bible along
side current events, the Wired Word,
attempts to weave together our
ancient faith with modern life. If you
would like to receive the study by
email, please contact the church
office.
Prime Timer's
Luncheon
Join us for lunch on Tuesday,
January 10th at 11:45 AM. Lee

We have ended our study of C.S. Lewis's
"Mere Christianity," and we look
forward to using the new Alpha Course
for first 10 weeks of 2017 starting
January 5th. We will be using the new
shortened video with an open discussion
of the basics of the Christian faith. No
question is ever off limits as we continue
to grow in our faith together. If you feel
your faith is a "work in progress," don't
miss this important course that some
have called a Christian Boot Camp. Bring
your "Bod," and your best thoughts.

So What’s a Deacon,
Anyway?
You may have noticed recently that
church documents now refer to Lynn as
“Deacon Lynn Bulock” instead of Lynn
Bulock, Diaconal Minister. This is
because in August the Churchwide
Assembly voted to combine three rosters
of lay ministers into one Roster of Word
and Service, with the title Deacon. As of
January 1st, the ELCA now has two
rosters: Ministers of Word and
Sacrament (Pastors) and Ministers of
Word and Service (Deacons).
Deacons serve the church in
congregations, as chaplains, and in
nonprofit agencies. Word and Service
means that like pastors, they are rooted in
the Word of God for proclamation
(preaching) and service. The biggest
difference is that pastors are called to
perform the sacraments of the church,
Holy Communion and Baptism, where
deacons have a focus on servant ministry
instead.
Constitutional language for the church,
defining deacons, says they focus on
servant ministry “giving particular
attention to the suffering places in God’s
world”, call for justice and proclaim
God’s love for the world, “witnessing to
the realm of God in the community, the
nation, and abroad.
As a deacon, Lynn gets to equip the
baptized for ministry in a way that helps
each person live out their baptism.
Deacons practice stewardship that points
out God’s gifts of time, talents and
resources, and encourage others to
participate in the mission of God. It’s
great work, and we are excited by the
possibility that she could serve New
Hope in this work.
At our annual meeting on January 29th,
we will consider ways that the
congregation could put together a parttime call to Word and Service ministry
for her. For the time being, it would be
non-stipendiary (unpaid), with the hope
that it might eventually change if
possible.
If you have questions, or just want to
talk more about what deacons do and
who we are, we will do that between
services on a Sunday in early January.
See you then!
Gaye Khan, Staff Ministry
Tax-Smart Giving Options
New Hope can accept a gift of
stocks or mutual funds that have
appreciated in value, which might
provide you a capital gains tax
advantage. Alternatively, if one has an
IRA that requires a minimum
distribution in 2017, one might be able
to make a donation directly to the
church. Please consult an accountant or
financial advisor to see if such a
donation would benefit you. If yes, ask
Gary Alwood or Joe Bulock about the
necessary church information.
Upcoming 2017 Budget
Meetings
The Council wants to provide as
much information as possible on the
2017 budget. Forums will be provided
to discuss the budget prior to the
upcoming Congregational Meeting on
January 29th. Watch the bulletins for
dates and times.
New Hope Lutheran Church
Mission Endowment Fund
New Hope wants to provide means
to ensure God’s work is done by our hands
in the Conejo Valley and elsewhere in the
mission field. A committee has been
working since May drafting the
governance for Council to establish and
direct the Mission Fund. A vote to
approve this fund will be part of the
upcoming Congregational Meeting. If
approved, the New Hope Lutheran
Church Mission Endowment Fund will be
established to provide a perpetual source
of income to support mission work at
home and around the world, above and
beyond the programs supported through
regular offerings. If you have any
questions, ask any member of the
committee (Joe Bulock, Karen Ingram,
Gaye Khan, and Wayne Rickert).
Prayer Shawl Ministry
This group meets every first and third
Sundays at 9:45 AM in the Amplify
Room. Feel free to stop by and see what
we’re all about. We have plenty of yarn,
needles, and looms to get you started!
MAX BAGS
Our Max Bags (children’s activity
bags) need some sprucing up and refilling.
We’re looking for a few Grandmas (or
Grandpas) who can spend a few hours
making sure the bags are in good shape
and loaded with goodies to keep young
children occupied while their parents
listen to Pastor Craig’s great sermons. If
you can help with this one-time project,
please call Jax Rains-Turk if you can help
(805-498-6793).
PM. We also need dinner servers so please
feel welcome to stay and help with this very
worthwhile evening.
If you have any
questions, please contact Merylee Blair at
805-490-1867. Thank you.
UPLIFT VC Program
Resumes
The Uplift VC program has
resumed our first and third Tuesday
evening programs. There is no church that
is more involved in UPLIFT VC than New
Hope Lutheran. We now have four allies
serving now who will mentor and coach
people who want to break the chain of
poverty and become financially
independent. Thank you to all of you who
have provided meals over the last two
years. Consider joining the support team
in November. Help once, and you'll want
to help again. If you feel called to make a
real difference in people's lives talk to
Terry Paulson ([email protected])
about how you can get involved beyond
the meal preparation.

President's Message
By Jim Valestrino
It is with a heavy heart, but a happy wife,
that I will be termed out as Council
President and no longer on Council,
instead, taking my wife out to dinner on
those Tuesday nights. New hope
Lutheran Church will continue to be our
church and home of many friends. Lou
Fiore will be taking over my position as
Operations Committee Chairperson and I
will continue to help him in any way I can.
After five years as a Council Member,
with two years as President, I have an
entirely new respect for our Pastor,
Council Members both current and past,
and all the congregation members that
keep our church functioning and serve
our community. Our church is doing
God’s work in so many ways thanks to
your dedication, talents and generosity. I
feel blessed to be such a small part of the
greater good our church has done and
credit all of you for making other lives
better.
I know 2017 will come with challenges.
I’m confident, we as Lutherans, will
continue to solve any issues, continue to
help the needy, and be the example of
strength our Creator gives us every day to
do the right things.
Council
Corner
By Gail McGinnis
The regular Council meeting was
held on December 13th. Our finances
were discussed and suggestions were
made as to how we can up the money that
is needed to get out of the red. A budget
meeting for the Council will be January
8th after second service.
The
congregational meeting will be January
29th.
It was decided what will be
discussed at this meeting.
The Alpha Course starts
January 29th
What is Alpha? One participant captured
it well, “Through Alpha I have renewed
my commitment to God, strengthened
my faith and even ‘walked’ with the
Holy Spirit! Alpha is ‘Religion 101’ for
all who seek to know more about Jesus.”
Alpha is not about religion; it is not about
church. It is about a personal
understanding of God — the Father, the
Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is about
growing in your personal relationship
with God and seeing and helping others
grow.
This free course starts on Sunday,
January 29th at 5:30 PM with the
Introduction Supper. This is an
introduction evening for anyone who
wants to know more about the Alpha
Course.
Come and find out if this program is
something you want to experience. After
dinner we will have a short music and
jokes segment followed by a video
presentation entitled Christianity:
Boring, Untrue or Irrelevant? On all
nights, except this first one, we will
break into small discussion groups to
share thoughts or feelings generated
from the video presentation. No one is
pressured to share, it’s OK to sit and
listen. The ten week course starts the
Sunday evening following the
Introduction Supper. The topics
discussed in the course include:
Who is Jesus?
Why did Jesus Die?
How can I be Sure of my Faith?
How do I Read the Bible?
Does God Heal Today?
Why and How do I Pray?
What does the Holy Spirit do?
How Can I be Filled with the
Spirit?
How can I Resist Evil?
How does God Guide Us?
Please see our Alpha brochure or call
Lorie Paulson for more information
and to RSVP at 818-991-5268.
Come and See! Invite others to join
you!

Future
New Hope’s Mental Health Ministry
has put on a variety of programs in the
last two years, and we’d like to have
your help to plan for the future.
Normally we do three programs a
year, in fall, winter and spring.
We’ve had panels of experts, and
several speakers for NAMI (National

looking for topics of interest for
January and April or May. Who
would you like to hear from? What
would you like to learn more about?
We’re open to suggestions.
